I don't know if he did or not, but I'd think after a 30 point lead it'd be time to send in the 2nd and 3 rd string and save the 1st string for state.
He sounds like a hell of a good coach. Maybe our Texas lot (I'm looking at you, Fraz) can give us a bit more insight.

While I wouldn't use the term "bullying"; it's awfully poor sportsmanship.

It isn't poor sportsmanship. And he did have the bench players in.

But you get to a point in a seasons when you have to play your starters into the second half so that their bodies are prepared for it when you do have a tough game. And when your 2nd and 3rd stringers in, you can't tell them not to play hard. They work just as hard as your starters during the week and deserve to be rewarded when they get to play.

It's the other teams job to stop you. They continued to run the ball, and that's all you can do.

Pretty much not poor sportsmanship if he was putting the bench in. If a team busts ass in practice there's no need to reign them in for the actual game unless you want to send mixed messages and mess them up for big games. The guys work hard, they earned their big victories.

Well, it was on Fox News - it has to be Obama's fault somehow.

The wonderful irony of that gif is that, IIRC, it was pretty much "Blame Bush" for the first 4 years of his presidency.

In Iowa high school games, once the scores have spread of more than x points - I want to say 35? - the clock no longer stops except for halftime.

91 points is a bit much though. Seriously. Typically you put in the 2nd and 3rd string guys to give them practice and keep the score from being that bad. Fights and stuff break out when it gets heavily lopsided. Kind of like your average soccer game in Brazil. Of course we don't behead the refs though...

OK if he had the benchers in then there's nothing else he could do.

How bad is 91 points by NFL standards? In regards to how scores differ depending on the scoring system in a game. For example losing by 91 in soccer is...impossible (basically), a hilariously embarrassing amount in rugby (but not impossible), and not that weird in cricket (a brief collapse can see you lose by that much)

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

13 touchdowns and follow on field goals. Thats an epic schooling.

Ah right, so a touchdown is worth a bit more than a try in rugby. Pretty brutal.

edit: I seem to have invented a game between Australian and Springboks in my mind where we lost by like 80 points...I could have sworn it happened but I can't find it anywhere on the internet...I'm scared.

In my experience on J-B Black that's standard behavior.
To actually be accused of bullying for something like that is unbelievably stupid. Which is why it's in the news.

It doesn't usually happen - you don't want to risk injuries for a game that's already won.

Not to mention no professional team would be so incompetent as to actually make scoring that many touchdowns possible in the time allotted for a normal game.

a 3 touchdown lead would be pretty big. At that point you just go into damage control and try to maintain the lead, not lengthen it.

That must have been one heck of a one sided match.

Here's the key, from the ESPN article:

Buchanan simplified the playbook. He put in the second- and third-team offensive line and got the backups as much time as he could, while still playing a few starters here and there at the beginning of the third quarter. He told his punt returner to fair-catch the ball. All told, his offense had 32 snaps. His starters began coming out in the third quarter, some of them having played just 16 snaps, Buchanan said. The Bearcats rushed for 391 yards with eight touchdowns.

Buchanan said his starting running back touched the ball six times and scored four touchdowns. His backup kept finding holes as well, even without the starting offensive line in the game.

Really, I don't know what else you want him to do.

Give the ball to the band drumline. I bet they could have won at that rate.

Given these facts, the losing team can go suck an egg. No bullying there.

Three QB kneeldowns and punting is absolutely on the table as an option.

If they're still running plays and still having success, then OBVIOUSLY they haven't backed off to the fullest possible degree. Kneeldowns obviously make a joke of the game, but it sounds as though it reached that point pretty quickly anyway.

I don't think the coach showed poor sportsmanship, but perhaps he didn't exercise the maximum possible sportsmanship. If I'm the HC, once I'm up, say, 60 points with no end in sight, I cross the field and very respectfully ask the other coach what he wants me to do. If he said he wanted me to run plays so that his defense gets some work, so be it. He could have just behaved like a decent person and have a conversation with the other HC. Again, I don't think he should be crucified for not doing so, but there was some room for improvement there.

Really? What about his duty to his team? What about his responsibility to the kids on the 3rd string, who have practiced and finally gotten a chance to play. Is it that coach's fault that the other team came in woefully underprepared? Those 3rd string kids get valuable reps by playing, so that in a year, they've got some experience when it's their turn to be the starters.

As others have said, he shows sportsmanship by taking out his best players and allowing his backups to get field time. The other coach shows ineptitude.

Largest winning margin against the Wobblies: 30 Aug 2008 Ellis Park (Jhb) SA 53 Aus 8
Biggest losing margin: 15 July 2006 Suncorp Stadium Aus 49 SA 0

Granted, the way your team is screwing up playing this year, we should of broken that record this year.

This right here....

Also, I dunno if its the same in Texas, but in Oregon where I played my HS football at, if the point spread was greater than 35 points different, then the winning coach had to send an official letter to the opposing school/coach. We unofficially called it the "I'm sorry your team sucks" letter.

@Motyak, I believe you may be thinking of some other international matches.

In the 1995 RWC, The All Blacks beat Japan 145-17.
in the '99 RWC, the ABs beat Italy 101-3, and the next day, England beat Tonga 101-10
in the '03 RWC Australia beat Namibia 142-0.

You obviously don't watch the Vikings play a lot. Of course, that is more of coach incompetence than anything (like lets make our only QB to win a game this year the 3rd string QB)
