For the work-blocked:

Spoiler:
Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs is an awesome guy. He can build or fix anything, he’s very entertaining, and has a great sense of humor. Mike also tells it like it is and gives great advice to others. A fan wrote him and asked him for some career advice:

Hey Mike!

I’ve spent this last year trying to figure out the right career for myself and I still can’t figure out what to do. I have always been a hands on kind of guy and a go-getter. I could never be an office worker. I need change, excitement, and adventure in my life, but where the pay is steady. I grew up in construction and my first job was a restoration project. I love everything outdoors. I play music for extra money. I like trying pretty much everything, but get bored very easily. I want a career that will always keep me happy, but can allow me to have a family and get some time to travel. I figure if anyone knows jobs its you so I was wondering your thoughts on this if you ever get the time! Thank you!

- Parker Hall

Hi Parker

My first thought is that you should learn to weld and move to North Dakota. The opportunities are enormous, and as a “hands-on go-getter,” you’re qualified for the work. But after reading your post a second time, it occurs to me that your qualifications are not the reason you can’t find the career you want.

I had drinks last night with a woman I know. Let’s call her Claire. Claire just turned 42. She’s cute, smart, and successful. She’s frustrated though, because she can’t find a man. I listened all evening about how difficult her search has been. About how all the “good ones” were taken. About how her other friends had found their soul-mates, and how it wasn’t fair that she had not.

“Look at me,” she said. “I take care of myself. I’ve put myself out there. Why is this so hard?”
“How about that guy at the end of the bar,” I said. “He keeps looking at you.”
“Not my type.”
“Really? How do you know?”
“I just know.”
“Have you tried a dating site?” I asked.”
“Are you kidding? I would never date someone I met online!”
“Alright. How about a change of scene? Your company has offices all over – maybe try living in another city?”
“What? Leave San Francisco? Never!”
“How about the other side of town? You know, mix it up a little. Visit different places. New museums, new bars, new theaters…?”
She looked at me like I had two heads. “Why the hell would I do that?”

Here’s the thing, Parker. Claire doesn’t really want a man. She wants the “right” man. She wants a soul-mate. Specifically, a soul-mate from her zip code. She assembled this guy in her mind years ago, and now, dammit, she’s tired of waiting!!

I didn’t tell her this, because Claire has the capacity for sudden violence. But it’s true. She complains about being alone, even though her rules have more or less guaranteed she’ll stay that way. She has built a wall between herself and her goal. A wall made of conditions and expectations. Is it possible that you’ve built a similar wall?

Consider your own words. You don’t want a career – you want the “right” career. You need “excitement” and “adventure,” but not at the expense of stability. You want lots of “change” and the “freedom to travel,” but you need the certainty of “steady pay.” You talk about being “easily bored” as though boredom is out of your control. It isn’t. Boredom is a choice. Like tardiness. Or interrupting. It’s one thing to “love the outdoors,” but you take it a step further. You vow to “never” take an office job. You talk about the needs of your family, even though that family doesn’t exist. And finally, you say the career you describe must “always” make you “happy.”

These are my thoughts. You may choose to ignore them and I wouldn’t blame you – especially after being compared to a 42 year old woman who can’t find love. But since you asked…

Stop looking for the “right” career, and start looking for a job. Any job. Forget about what you like. Focus on what’s available. Get yourself hired. Show up early. Stay late. Volunteer for the scut work. Become indispensable. You can always quit later, and be no worse off than you are today. But don’t waste another year looking for a career that doesn’t exist. And most of all, stop worrying about your happiness. Happiness does not come from a job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that’s consistent with those beliefs.
Many people today resent the suggestion that they’re in charge of the way the feel. But trust me, Parker. Those people are mistaken. That was a big lesson from Dirty Jobs, and I learned it several hundred times before it stuck. What you do, who you’re with, and how you feel about the world around you, is completely up to you.

Good luck -
Mike

PS. I’m serious about welding and North Dakota. Those guys are writing their own ticket.
PPS Think I should forward this to Claire?

Something I think is good advice for everyone on just about everything. A little bit of niceness to start your day.

Mike Rowe says lots of awesome stuff.

He got a ton of heat for his Wal-Mart commercial, but he just does what he thinks is best for US white-collar workers.

And he did this years ago, which is just an extra layer of awesome:

Huh, maybe I should take up welding since I'm only about an hour from North Dakota.

Got to hear him do a speech for the Boy Scouts at the National Jamboree when I worked it. He's an incredible person and always offers great advice.

I had to learn this lesson the hard way after beating my head against a wall for 3 years in Kentucky. Trying to make a career work that wasn't going to happen, make a relationship work that wasn't meant to be, etc. And then on a whim I joined up with AmeriCorps and moved halfway across the country. Best decision I made in years.

Been a big fan of Mike Rowe for a long time. He's absolutely on both this (your dream job/person/whatever is often just that: a dream) and on trades. I absolutely agree that for plenty of people college is not the right answer; trades offer excellent opportunities for people to make a good living.

That's one of the things I really like about him. He never talks down about college, he just points out that it is a path and that there are many others.

Almost all the stuff on his YouTube channel is just awesome and hilarious as well.

I think his ability in voiceovers will keep him employed. I find him second only to Morgan Freeman.

I disagree with his message, life is short, you will spend about 1/4 of it working, don't waste your life doing something you hate just to survive.

The problem with that is, if you just try and chase your "dream job" you'll likely end up wasting your life chasing an impossible goal and work a job you hate anyway.

Make having a steady income one of your goals and you'll end up being happier no matter where you end up.

Or to sum it up, have realistic goals and realize that some of the more romantic ideas you have may not be feasible. You may really want to be an engineer, but realize that there are way too many of them out there and you might have trouble finding and holding your dream job.

1. I AM an engineer.
2. There ain't too many of us out there, if anything there aren't enough, particularly as the baby boomers retire, although the real shortage is on the software side (which sadly, I am not).
3. Searching for a dream job and having a job are not mutually exclusive endeavors. I know because that is where I am at currently with my life. I'm making decent money, not what I should be making given my position, title, degree, qualifications, and productivity, but decent money for my age nonetheless. Doesn't mean I'm happy or enjoy doing the work I do, doesn't mean that I'm going to not look for something I would enjoy, and doesn't mean that I wouldn't undergo a career change if I did find something I enjoyed more.

And there is a difference between "do the job you can get now" and "settle for the job you can get now". Mike Rove isn't advocating for settling.

I'd also argue that when trying to be happy, being upset that you can't find your dream job and continuing to be unemployed will have you less happy then having a job you may not love (but don't necessarily hate) but that lets you afford to do the other things that you DO love.

I don't love my job. It's not very exciting, but it pays well, has great benefits, let's me work from home a couple days a week and allows me to spend money on the things I enjoy. Whether it's buying amazing food, models, books, or whatever I need to fix up my farm (which is what I actually DO love, but wouldn't be able to survive using as my primary source of income).

Looking for your "ideal" whatever is pointless if you do it to the exclusion of all else. That "ideal" thing may not even exist! Sometimes, you have to take what you can get and keep working and keep looking. And you can't look very well when you have blinders on.

I also found that if I was working a "get me by" job, taking advantage of networking with people you meet is huge.

If you work hard, have a good personality, talk to people and mention what you would like to do, you never know who will happen to know a guy. I got into being a stagehand for example because I was volunteering for a show and mentioned that I would love to work the real thing. One of the other volunteers happened to know a guy who did it professionally and I had a job in a couple of weeks.

No, he's telling people don't sit around and NOT make money waiting for that something you love to come along, make the most of what you do have, and if something does come along seize the moment.

But don’t waste another year looking for a career that doesn’t exist. And most of all, stop worrying about your happiness. Happiness does not come from a job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that’s consistent with those beliefs.

That's not how I took it. Take it as his Claire situation. If your just going to sit on your ass and pass up opportunity after opportunity, it's your own damn fault.

He wasn't saying do something you don't love. What he was saying is if something you love isn't in front of you, don't pass up on something you don't, you're doing no one any good that way. You may not love the job you take, but you never know what opportunities it will open up for you.
