Subject: Slo Mo video of missile that "never" misses its target

I'm a little confused. Is the explosive version supposed to kill the driver but leave passengers alive? Cause the explosion looks a weee bit big for leaving them without a bad case of dead. Seems like a non-explosive one would be more effective at that, just cave his head in

The non-explosive version is solely used for testing.

Yeah. One of the tests shows that the truck keeps going after the non-warhead one hits, as it seems to enter through the top of the cab and go through the rear trailer rather than hitting the engine. At the right angle it might've torn off the rear axle, but weirdly the truck is fine (other than the stonking great hole through it).
The warhead ones? Yeah. Not so much left after the missile hits.
Very cool...the only issue is cost. These things supposedly cost over 100,000 British pounds ea. Doing a little cost analysis of this thing, versus a $500 pickup truck filled with the ubiquitous Beardsley mcJihadBros and maybe $2,000 in weapons...I have to wonder if we shouldn't be looking for cheaper solutions, rather than more accurate ones.
Similar thing we faced in the war with Lebanon in 2006 - even if we could hit every single Katushya launcher before it fired, we'd still be losing out, because they're dirt cheap and we were using $20,000 + bombs to destroy them.

Even without the warhead one of those missiles hitting a vehicle would still almost always kill everyone in it.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

100,000 british pound moneys is a steal!
I think we're talking about way different payloads dude...
This...to put it in perspective, Tomahawk has 100x the range and weighs about 30 times as much. It's definitely more of a strategic weapon...this thing looks like it's supposed to be used like a Hellfire.

That's why we need railguns.
The round itself would be relatively cheap compared to the target. Only the gun itself is expensive, and that is reusable.
Its why missiles really aren't a cost effective way of fighting.

This is really cool stuff. That going thrugh the window hitting the dirver is pretty cool. Who knew you could snipe with a Missile.
Yeah, but seems like an expensive way to do it, although still worth it if you really need to kill the driver of a moving vehicle without harming other passengers... except for, y'know, the mental and emotional trauma that comes with having the person sitting next to you turn into a bloody mist.... ;P

Totally agreed...do you have more info on this?
As I understand it, it's a direct fire weapon - you point it directly at the thing you're trying to shoot then adjust windage and elevation. It doesn't seem to work like artillery but maybe I'm wrong.
Another option the AF is exploring heavily is directed energy weapons, though right now they're pretty expensive per shot because of the power requirements. Last I heard, MTHEL (a US-Israeli collaboration) cost something like $20,000 per shot. I've seen a number of job postings and calls for researchers investigating morale effects associated with DE weapons. If they're worried about how people feel about fighting with and against DE weapons you would think that they're getting pretty close.

Sure, you can direct fire with a rail gun, but it also can fire like artillery. With a range of 400 miles and very good accuracy.
Like any projectile weapon, it fires in a parabolic arc. And thus can indirect fire.
I'll look up some more info in a little bit.

Woo, hot damn, check out those 'splosions. Just think how many wedding parties, schools, medical convoys, and allied military units we'll be able to accidentally blow up with those!

Weddings are Dull Affairs that DESERVE a tactical bombing in my opinion.

I don't know what weddings you've been going to, but my wedding experience has consisted of incredibly epic moments (the accounts of which don't need to be available on the internet for all to see).

This is why I'm not fond of working with Scots.
