If it really is "Battle for Rynn's World," I would hardly expect the marines to come with Ultramarine details.[/fluff nutter]

perhaps in 3 or 4 years when he might be able to pass for one of the big boys....

Battle For Maccrage was skirmish 40K. You got two forces , and rules. you bang heads with, but wasn't a real 40K game.

And "real 40k" is two forces that cost a minimum of $600 each... and rules.. that you bang heads with. AMIRITE?

No, he wants it right now.

No, it's two forces of a minimum of 1000 poitns each, however much that costs, to bang heads with. And rules.

Was a there a point to your post?

Actually, for real armies, I meant a HQ with two troops choices, for legal army composition.

The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, edition box sets have all been troop choices, and 1 fast attack in the 3rd edtion box.
None of them was a fieldable force.

What someone really should have been included was two playable forces of equal points values, so that a new player could experience the game right out of the box, which is exactly what WarMachine, AT43, every clix game, etc.. did while GW forced you to go buy addiditonal models that cost as much if not more than the starter set did.

If the 5th edition rumors prove to be true, this appears to be what they finally did.

For me it will really depend on what else comes in the box. The Battle for McDonald's set was good for me as I got stacks of Tyranid stuff (good plastic Gaunts, plastic Sporemines) and that great crashed shuttle.

Plus that guy with the geneseed box, and all the teleport homers and shield gens. Useful stuff for other games. I gave the Marines away in trade for another set of BFM Tyranids.

So if it's just a few Marines and some Orks, I'll pass. If it's a few Marines, some Orks, and some funky terrain and other stuff, then I'll get it, trade the Orks to a friend of mine, and find some use for the Marines.

The 40k3 and 40k4 starter boxes only needed a HQ model for each side. 10 Marines / 20 Dark Eldar / however many Nids gives 2 minimum-sized Troops.

IMO, the big terrain in the current boxed set is a bad thing because it is so bulky and doesn't add that much to playing - players want more models!

If I were doing the 40k5 boxed set, it'd be:
- 16 SM (1 HQ, 1 combat squad, 1 full tactical squad) on 2 sprues of 8 SM with HQ / VS & weapons options.

- 32 Orks (1 HQ, 1 full mob, 1 mini-mob) on 4 sprues of 8 Orks with HQ / Nob & weapon options.

Technically enough to play 1 HQ & 2 Troops, with a few options to experiment with.

I can't really see the Dread vs Deffkoptas, because it's just a bit too rules-complex and asymmetrical for a starter set. Plus, GW flying base stands totally suck, and snapping the post tip is just going to annoy new players.

But adding 1 SM Dread vs 2 Ork Kans would work beautifully. For the most part, Walkers act very similarly to Infantry. Plus, they are big and cool models.

Although Apocalypse introduces something that could potentially be brought into 5th Ed on a smaller scale - particularly if they're using a BfM-style rulebook and scenario book. If the box set includes different point values of models, strategic assets could be introduced for purchase to even up the playing field. Doesn't solve the problem completely, but could improve it.

I like the strategic asset rules. I would welcome them in the 40K main rules

Still just being able to reduce the Dread down to 2 pieces for the body and legs would be a major technical feat.

But they have just spent alot of money on that sliding core technology , so would it be possible if you had a 4 section mold instead of the usual 2 section mold? I have been trying to fathom out why GW needed sliding core in the first place , its an expensive bit of kit just to make pre drilled holes in the bane blade guns .but if you needed to produce simple 2 part vehicles /walkers it might just fit the bill???

For those that havent got the latest white dwarf all the crimson fist models featured in the "battle for rynns world" article are last edition ,ie metal command squad , metal dreds etc .Smells like they are covering something up ?I think we are about to see a whole load of imperial/crimson fist upgrade sprues to go with this years release. It would make more sense to make upgrade sprues for the two fist armies to complement the 5th edition release than to update the space wolves ,think about it ,if you are new to the hobby and your visiting GW shop for the first time after buying the 5th edition and you want some more marines for your army which are you more likely to buy ? crimson fist /imperial fist models or space wolves or generic ,plus they will be so easy to produce ,they wont even need to sculpt anything for the most part , just do a black templar style upgrade sprues with some tank icons and some leader models that are splash releases.
Marine players will go for them and new players will buy loads ,slap a second wave of orcs in the mix too and BANG 5th edition .

hmmm plastic death kopptaz , new jet bikes for eldar ,space marine drop pods ,imperial guard rumours of flyers and Dawn of war Soul storm has flyers in it ....Planetstrike could be good

Ah, crap - if they were to make IF/CF sprues like they did DA/BT, I might just have to make that CF army I've tried to build three previous times.
