well, on that front, i have a combined arms force ( SoB and IG) that weighs in at a hefty 13,000 points. so i think that im pretty nutz. and im starting orks to boot.
one of my friends, on the other hand, makes my 13k look SMALL! (shock and awe). he has ~15k of eldar and another 20k or so of marines. i dont know where he keeps all of it (tho the 5000 square foot house probably helps a bit with that )

15 months ago I learned that this hobby exists. I decide to but into chaos, and start with a box a plague marines and a box of havocs. I was stressing out for days that $100+ was a waste of money for 13 guys for a hobby I might not even like. Now I behold dakka-ites with 10k+pt armies... the mind boggles. Please please please post pictures, or provide links. I've got to see this madness. Especially you, H.B.M.C. . I'll believe 30 Russes when I see them.

Hmmmm......Adepticon eh?
Wonder how much organisation and money it takes to put summat like that on.
Quite fancy running something similar, with the daft trophies suggested on Warseer (by Lanrak I think...) Nothing to do with lauding the winners, and the concept being they aren't something you can actually play for or design your list. For example, The Iron Grot Award, for best point for point kill ratio from a single model. Doesn't matter how much punishment the victim took before, it's all to do with the killing shot.

Sadly I don't have a group shot of all 30. Whenever I've put them into Companies my odd-ball Company (Annihilator, 6 Demolishers, 3 Exterminators) always seems to be absent. I do have these two though:
Before anyone says anything about the shots - a photographer I am not, and that's my phone's camera. There's more than that, like the super-heavies and artillery, some of which you can see here:
And everyone in my group is like this. For instance, here's my friend's Eldar army:

You are serious certifiable. I mean that is a humungous army. I thought my Eldar collection was excessive, but these... wow.
What piques my interest is: First do you bother with more than a few infantry? Secondly, where are your titans? And third, in the screenshot with the massed super heavies, and the Eldar what (if anything) was it set up to face against?

Not my Eldar. As I said, they belong to a friend of mine. The two Revenant Titans were on a different table when that shot was taken. And to your questions: 1. I always bother with infantry! Infantry are the backbone of the Guard. I have over 400 infantry models for my Guard. Only the Mordians showed up for the battle above because in my army's fluff the Mordians are the Artillery guys (hence the guys standing on the Basilisks). My Mechanised Company (two 45-man platoons made of plastic Cadians, all riding in Chimeras) were going to take part in the battle, but the game was big enough already. 2. I haven't got any Titans. I chose to go the tank route, which is why I have 8 super-heavies (2 Macharius' hadn't arrived yet thanks to FW's shocking service, otherwise they'd've been on the table as well). I will eventually get a Reaver, as it is my fav 40K Titan of all time, but I want to wait until I have the money (heh) and for them to make some new arms. 3. Heh. Good question. Shows a good amount of perception for someone to go "If you have that much on that side... what the hell are they fighting?". The simple answer to that is CHAOS. The longer answer is a LOT OF CHAOS. This table was a 10X6 or 12X6, can't remember which, and ther was a nearly 5X6 block that was just a Chaos parking lot for vehicles. The first turn the vehicles came steaming through the massive gateway in the fortress walls (about 3-4 feet from our gunline). We opened fire, wiped out virtually everything that came through (Arty Companies are SOOO much fun, especially when there's a Bombard and a trio of Manticores - I love those tanks). This left a carpet of infantry far as the eye could see, so we spent the next turn sending pie-plates downrange to wipe out as many as we could. The infantry were wiped out and replaced with small clumps of Independant Characters (all with Daemonic Runes or Adamantium Mantles). Another wave of tanks came screeching in on our right flank, to which I poured my 'Odd Ball' Russ Company, which included 6 Demolishers. Those things cleaned up at short range. About 30 Terminators landed in our lines, and were fought off valiently by some Blood Raven Terminators, my Mordians and Kyoto-Pattern Inquisitorial Fire Teams, a Scorpion and 2 Revanants. The Revenants died pretty quickly though, one falling to many, many chainfists, and the other to massed incomin firepower from the 6 or so Slaaneshi Havoc squads that were manning the walls. 6000 points of Grey Knights came to the rescue, finishing off everything on the walls in short order, and bailing out our middle-left flank. Then Typhus and a huge Retinue showed up, and a wave of Greater Daemons, including a HUE Daemon Prince (using the Balrog model) that was a special rule for this set of Apoc games (there were three games like this over 3 days). Typhus and his retinue eliminate my Macharius, Hellhammer and numerous other things. On comes a 30-something model Seer Council backed up by 30 Harli's come rushing in, and they cut their way through everything, banish the massive daemon prince, and helps out the Grey Knights (taking down a big Nurgle Daemon Prince as well). Over on my side I manage to fell the oncoming Bloodthirster, Keeper of Secrets and Great Unclean one before they can get within charge range. My artillery silences the Defilers on their side. A Vortex Grenade runs rampant, taking out a Manticore and a few scattered Guardsmen, but thankfully missing the huge bunker that contains my Regimental HQ, Inquisitorial teams, Vindicare Assassins, Snipers and other things. The game was huge. Biggest game I've ever played. Can't remember how many points. Didn't involve any of the Eldar tanks as it happens, just the Wraithlords and Wraithguard. BYE

Anyways, yes, I have spent far too much money on Stuff. Mostly due to being a completist. So when I buy an army, I want everything. And I want complete units, if that is part of the game. Most of my money sofar has gone on Confrontation - everything Wolfen, Daikinee and Griffins, and most of Dirz and the Goblins I have. I'm well on my way of completing everything Cygnar in Warmachine, and I think I have everything now (barring the very latest releases) from Circle (Hordes).
Worried? A little bit at the moment. But that's because I'm starting to notice the money drain more. Thank goodness for joint accounts, direct debits for bills and that lump sum that goes out of my account at the start of every month. That way, I know the bills are always paid.

I have just about the entire Necron army list stable. That is, any legal Necron list you can make at 2000 points I can field, with fully painted minis. I've got the 9 tomb spyders, the 9 wraiths, the 10 Pariahs, the 2 destroyer lords, 30 immortals, just about everything.
The only exception is that I've only assembled 5 Heavy Destroyers. Also, I've only got 60 scarabs, so if I field my Mechagodzilla list, and the flying bugs don't die before the tomb spyders move into round 4 production I might find myself short of scarabs.
On the other hand I"ve got many more Monoliths, warriors, Immortals and Destroyers assembled than I can legally field in a force org. I've also got 3 Deceivers. I own 2 Pylons, but I've never been able to get them together.
The kicker is that since the Big Waaargh I've retired my crons to wait for our new 'dex. I've started Demons, and I"m nowup to 17 Bloodcrushers. The more I play, the more crushers show up, it's eery.
|
All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

You misread me, I was saying that my Eldar (c4000pts plus two scratchbuilt Revenants and a Scorpion 'in progress') is my personal idea of a mega army. If I said something like "I thought my Bretonnian collection was excessive, but these... wow." you would have reaslised I was not attributing that Eldar army to you.

400 actually doesnt sound as many as I thought you might have had with so many tanks. If you havent seen them already Armorcast and some other manufacturersd are making round skirmish base movement trays that conveniently fit 40K models. For games this big they could be a real saver, most mega games I have witnessed get so excessive the organisers decreed monsters and vehicles only, or bigger.

That explains your interest on the other thread. I would like Forgeworld to sell seperate arm weapons so you can refit your titans as and when.

Looking at what you have here yes a Reaver with Volcano cannon and Apocalypse launcher is the best choice. In that game you copuld have used the range any used standard bottleneck barrage tactics. Where if range allows you dont shoot the front wave of an incoming horde, you shoot behind it where the enemy is even more bunched. Gatling blaster is ok for a third weapon assuming you dont want a laser blaster oput of fairness. However with your army being what it is consider a second Volcano cannon, it would give your titan a very definate role in your army and it would make for an easy decision on when to take it, based on table size.

Ah, I have a solution there, give or trade away the excess. I have exactly the same problem, but learned to edit down rather than up. I also usually dont count extra heavy weapons. For example I trimmed my termies recently to a single squad of four plus one cyclone, heavy flamer and assault cannon terminator as a unit pool.
The only downsides to this philosophy of collecting is that it does nothing to stop the urge for competely new armies, and also I can get hosed on codex changes if there are major changes. If for any reason terminators went to six man squads (just an example) I would need to rebuy even though I recently had spare storm bolter termies.

Oh I have unit pools, and I keep things modular, two examples being:
1. I have 8 Cadian Meltaguns and 12 Cadian Flamers. I can swap out 4 flamers in a Command Section for 4 Meltaguns, and so on.
2. I have two plastic Chaos Termies w/Reaper ACs and 2 w/Heavy Flamers that I can swap in an out.
So all the special and heavy weapons exist in a pool of models. The same goes for a lot of my Marine Sergeants and HQs (I've got 12 Captains, 5 Chaplains, things like that). But regular guys... it's them I hate havng more of.
I have this random Cadian Sergeant and Flamer in my box'o'models, and they're currently sitting with all my Necromunda stuff as I have no where else to use them. I've also got two spare Bolter Marines and a spare Flamer Marine. No use for them.
I doubt I can trade away some random Bolter Marines.
