We started off with 10 Orks and then my kids wanted some more ... and they wanted to play Orks against terminators ... and I thought some Tyranids would be fun. A couple of Ebay auctions and trades later ...
There's an additional 24 genestealers, 14 ripper swarms and 8 carnifexes/tyrants that aren't in the picture.

The very fact that your entire collection fits on a 3x3' table with space to spare proves that you aren't packing much. If that's all you've got, you really shouldn't be "whipping it out" for comparison...
In contrast, there are several gamers (self included) here who could *easily* fill an a 4' x 8' multi-level gaming board if they ever broke out all of their minis.

Back in 2001 a friend and I decided to see how my collection was.
We stopped counting at 10,000 models (painted, assembled, desprued but not assembled) we didn't get to unopened boxes.
Back then my IG had 600 praetorians and 100 ratlings.
Another friend of mine has more miniatures than gaming stores do. He just orders boxes and boxes of all sorts of minis, board games, WW2 stuff, 2nd hand armies and most of it is not even opened, just sits piled up around the house and completely filling 3 rooms...
I'm about to start a BA army (6th one in 18 years) with metal shoulder pads and resin bases... but the minis are brough cheap from the UK so I am able to afford to buy the extras.

well, i may not even be in the same league as some of you, but i have about 13,000 points worth of imperial stuff (exclusively IG and =][=) and im still adding to it. and i just started an ork army that is already getting out of hand ($$ wise at least, god damn meganobz @$15 each!). so id say that im pretty mental. i do not, however, impulse buy. because if i did, 1) my parents would kick me out of the house and 2) id be broke before the end of next week.
either way, i will agree with the people that are saying that miniatures games are an addiction. and i have admitted mine. have you?

I believe I said "a couple of auctions later ..." and not "my collection is ....". Unfortunately, I've sold off a high elf, dark elf, chaos dwarf, beastman, skaven, and Orc and goblin armies over the last 2 years, so my minatures collection is greatly diminished, but I still have an empire army, tons of brettonians, Tau, Space Marines, and Eldar left over.

Back in 2001 we played a 25,000 points per side WHFB game, all my brets vs all his O&G (no magic items, no mages).
He had 100 squig hoppers that decimated one entire flank. I mean who owns 100 squig hoppers? And then paints them? 6 years before they are any good....

I'm not GW's baitch, but I'm a gaming whore.
For me its new systems... I dabble only a little, but many times.
So I've got functioning (and sometimes somewhat more than that!) armies/forces/collections for more systems than I can shake a very shakey stick at...
Warmachine, Hordes, WFB, LotR, Haloclix, Pirates of the Spanish Main, Rocketships, WFB, WAB, Pax Limpopo, Epic, BFG, Wings of War, Confrontation, AT-43, DBA, 40k, Full Thrust, ... oooh... etc., etc.,
And then there's the boardgames...
Variety is my crack!
Someone brings out a new game/system? I want it!
So far I have only managed to grind to a halt because of the amount of stuff I have to paint, means I really really cannot justify a new system that will sit in a draw for 5 years - so I have managed to resist Infinity as (but at only £20 or so for a starter set..... nnnnnnnngh!). But prepainted stuff and board games, anything I can play straight out of the box.... I'm pathetic!

In 2005 I *HAD* to have a Saim Hann army with 6 (fast attack) troop choices, all comprised of 3 vypers each. That's 18 vypers at $30 a pop. 3 wave serpent troops, 3 heavy falcons... I think the army unpainted was over $900. I got to play it for one tournament season, and then the new Eldar codex came out, killing the 6 fast list. Ouchie.

Well, if we are discussing single purchases, I have just received a Baccus 6mm Russian 1812 army containing over 2,300 infantry, over 680 cavalry, generals, couriers, casualties and 28 batteries of artillery.
Total cost for metal, painting, basing and shipping about £1,250.

Well, I guess I am totally screwed. I am just getting started, but I can see behavior in myself that I see you fine folks describing about yourselves. I am building one primary army. But I am also purchasing 3 other armies. And, from the looks of it, I am going to be getting into Warhammer Fantasy. I have so much fun building and painting, and reading about these dang little miniatures. (Sigh) I am a total addict.
Oh yeah, forgot to add. I'm eating Ramen this week because I purchased 2 Vindicators, 4 Squads of Termies, and....waaaaaay too much fluff from Forge World. (Sigh)....I hate my credit card.

I am throughly deranged when it comes to buying armies, but I have at least got army sizes/spending under some control. I do this my creeating a Master List for each army, normally at about double the normal game size. So my Master lists for fantasy are 4000pts, for 40K 3000points, actually 2500pts is my standard.
I buy kinitures for a 2500pt army over one or two detachments, exclusing the od bit of big stuff for Apocalypse. This is my limit. The two detachments is only so that I can have one of each HQ or HS choice.
Once my army is built to the points limit I set it will change each edition, but otherwise will not grow; thev temptation is not there.
However this does not stop me from collecting a whole new army, even if several others remain unpainted.

I'm pretty well behaved- I've stuck to one army at a time, and when I transitioned from necron to ork I looked around and thought "just want can me boyz loot 'ere" (Destroyers became warbikes and a box of transisters made regular crons looted 'ard shoota boyz... though those may wind up on ebay tbh). I tend to plop down the moneys in groups though... last couple of weeks I bought a killa kan, AoBR, and a sentinel (to turn into a killa kan as my FLGS ran out of the buggers). I've been pretty fortunate- i've been in the game for exactly a year now, and I highly doubt I've hit the $1000 mark yet (gogo dirt cheap ork boyz a year ago lol- then were going 10 bucks for 20 at one point).
Actually, lets map it out
Cron Destroyer Lord, Cron Battle Force, Cron Warrior box, Battle of Macragge- About 180 at the time. Gota lith for 30 sold it for 30 so its off the counts .
Spaze marines for my brother- Razorback kit, terminators, termi librarian, ebay army deal (50 marines for 40 bucks, including a dev squad? Sweet)- 155
Da boyz- bought four sets of 20 for 10 bucks back in the day, A couple of ebay dreads ( SM ones to be converted, 20 bucks before AoBR made em like water), Lootas, Blorcs (wanted to made flash gitz, they wound up sucking and thus turned back into lootas), SAG, KFF, 4 trukks (80- bought a speed freeks box, a new trukk and two off ebay real cheap), Aforementioned kan and sentinel and AOBR, some bikes to go with my destroyer bikers about 30- Little under 400... man I spend more on em than I thought.
So i've dropped 750 ish in a year of being in the hobby- not too bad considering I have 2500 points in orks, 1850 in crons (who need to go on ebay, though some of their flayers have broken =( ) and easily 2000 in spaze marines that aren't even mine (though, admittedly, I enjoy painting em). I guess I'm not too mental yet... though I keep wanting tyranids for some reason...

I'm just your standard, $3,000 a year crazy hobbyist.
But ZAHAHAHA! I have one hell of a BIT BOX! wow! And sure, I don't even play Warhammer, but those dark elf corsairs look good for Dark eldar proxies, and those black orks sure will help my 40K orks bit box, and those flaggelants sure look to have nice crazy bits for inquisitors henchmen.....and so on and so on, until you have a little bit of every army in the whole damned store.
Its cheaper than owning a boat or BUYING A NEW CAR!
Hell, its not that bad, I think someone with a hobby like photography or frequenting brothels would probably spend more, and feel just as cattle-trucked.

I have a wodgeload of orks, and I buy absolutely every ork miniature GW produce, regardless of whether I'll ever use it.
But I'm reasonable well behaved aside from that. My big problem is Warmachine at the minute- I want all of the factions. I was like that with LOTR for a while but it ebbed.

Friend of mine's got 6K of Grey Knights, and it's about 60 models, so 12K isn't much. It's more than you could ever field, but from a modelling perspective, it's not a huge amount. 30k of Guard on the other hand...
