It's a lot more useful if your squad has to trudge out to capture an objective.

Line squads with heavy weapons can't hoof it if they want??

What your suggesting isn't some new capability gained by losing heavy weapons. Loss of heavy weapons is a net loss overall, line squads stand to gain nothing. A pointless nerf, considering that noone takes line squads for anything other than the firepower(and because the have to).


Edit: Before I get some snarky response(not saying that I will, but just in case) look at it this way. Is anyone complaining about guard firepower? No, many even believe that they don't have enough, or that it is overpriced. So there is no balancing gain to be had. That eliminates any real reason to remove an option. There isn't any fluff justification, which are usually made up on the spot anyway and so cannot be used as a concrete case.

If guard line squads lost heavy weapon options, making them only of the only 2 armies in the game not to have them, then you will essentially alienate approximately 99% of current guard players. I say 99%, because I did see one poster here who said he preferred a "nuttin but troops" approach(for some insane reason).


So you have no gain (for the guard anyway, I'm sure Orks and Nids would love it.) either balance wise or monetarily. Heavy weapons are what, $35 per 3? Thems big money when you need 20 or so, per player not including different options they may want to switch in. On the other hand, you simply amputate a powerful option from an otherwise slow, weak, easy to chew up and break in cc unit of bodies. A net loss. Which is bad, to me at least.

@Ozy: given that I'm not going to have ALL of my squads spending ALL game slogging, having embedded Heavy weapons is far preferable.

Now maybe you play that way, and that's great. But for the same 6 pts, you really should be playing Orks.

Well, with all due respect Railguns, some of us might prefer playing an army with a bit more character in it. If it comes to playing an army I think is fun I'm going to take out my 75th Ranger Regiment inspired Drookian fen Guard and play with them. Theres an entire 2 regular infantry squads, not counting command squads, with ehavy weapons. The others are used flank nd annoy the living hell out of the opponent. support that with basilisks (much harder to do nowadays) and include a few well done Vet squads. The big problem with guard is that in order to be competitive, you can't be interesting. They need to make the new codex work different. Make the doctrines affect units the way hardened vets does (+1 to whatever stat) and limit the amount of this style doctrine. That would make things a hell of alot more interesting. Just for an example, catachans could be easily portrayed by giving them hardened vets (Keep it at 15 points) And another that say boosts their initiative by +1 (another 15 points) It would work out to 9 points a model, and would be correct fluff wise. Anyway, enough of my ranting, just figured I'd get that idea out there.

Assault Tank
The Leman Russ chassis is one of the most dependable and durable tank shape known to the Imperium. Due to this, and the age of the Leman Russ’s form, there are many variants on its weapon mount. Some Emphasise standing power and shell calibre, other its Armour. The Assault tanks use the Leman Russes engine for speed and manoeuvrability. It grinds ahead, uncaring of enemy fire, firing salvos of small weapons into the enemy and supporting the Imperial Guard advance.

The Assault tank uses the standard profile of the Leman Russ tank and its options (see Motor Pool for details) except for turret mount, which is detailed below.

The Leman Russ Assault Tank MUST take one of the following turret weapons:
Conqueror Cannon- 20
The Leman Russ Conqueror mounts a lighter calibre, shorter ranged shell in its turret which allows it to remain firing while still moving at high speeds.
The Conqueror may move 12” and still fire the conqueror cannon and any weapons which are S5 or
less.
The Conqueror cannon mounts a coaxial Storm Bolter.

Add me to the 1% that doesn't like heavy weapons in my squads. It's probably why I always lose but I like my men to be mobile and have the ability to capture objectives, without sacrificing the HW fire I really need because the only way you can kill anything with lasguns is if you roll a bucket of dice.

I like having my lascannons in antitank HQ squads where they can concentrate their fire easily, since they miss half the time anyway.

I started playing this way about a year ago and even though I don't win much the games have been a lot more fun.

And trading the Heavy Weapons for Special Weapons is again pure wishlisting. There is no logical reason for this beyond someone blindly writing a Codex to suit his style of play. All you'd see, using this list, would be 2 Grenade Launchers, seeing as he has upped the AP to 3, just so he doesn't have to risk cooking his own troops with Plasma Guns.....

Well, its not like you can't move if you have heavy weapons, you just can't move and shoot them. So you are probably better off taking heavy weapons into other units so that you aren't wasting points if you want to move. But not taking heavy weapons can already be done now, if you want. There is no logic to removing an alternative to mobbing across the board, especially as other armies do it much better, like Orks.

It's hardly wasted point if you spend a turn to put the enemy in harms way or get your self out of harms way!

I dunno, I just like the idea of rows and rows of lasguns and the HW's giving support from the back field. Seems to be more in line with the fluff (I'm thinking of all the Ghosts books).

Nothing forces you to take Heavy Weapons if you don't want to. You can take rows of Lasguns - that's *your* personal choice.

But taking away the option for Heavy Weapons is a problem.

And that's the heart of the problem.

what if they took them out of the infantry squads, but let you add maybe 1 anti-tank squad and/or 1 fire support squad to the platoon, allowing them to also benefit from that platoon drill thingy so they can shoot through their men? So, you could use your screening wall of regular troops to be in the front, and behind them you have your stationary guns who are the ones who do the real work?
