And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity...... |

Best of luck Dave, and thanks for being an inspiration to all of us (for both converting skill AND being a really nice guy).
GW just screwed their public-image pooch even more. Hope this helps other mini companies that support events and converting to get a toe-hold against the giant that doesn't retain it's best employees.

Ok a bit of gallows humor here.....whenever the CEO was over from the UK, we ( the employees of GW) would put together a death pool about who would be let go next. It was a joke, because he never really had influence on that, but it did always seem people were let go right after his visits.
His last visit was, I believe, in November, right before I was laid off.
Spooky.
I loved working for the company, they are a great group of guys, the work was awesome, being able to talk to so many gamers and hobbyists all over the world was very special. If anyone has a chance to work for GW, take it!

As others have already said, a sad and mystifying move by GW.
Dave is an absolutely class act, treating people well, remembering us as individuals, listening with respect and consideration to our thoughts and ideas, and clearly doing his level best to run great events. That's without even considering his incredible and inspiring artistic work, which has got to have inspired more purchases than any given year's worth of White Dwarf ads.
Last year I had the privilege of spending a chunk of Friday night before the Baltimore GT at Edgar's with Dave, discussing life and tournaments over a few beers. While Dave didn't agree with all of my ideas, he engaged in genuine dialogue, and when the 2008 event rules came out it was obvious that he had engaged many players for our thoughts and feedback. I only hope Dave keeps attending events and I can buy him a beer next time.
Best of luck to Go-Go and John. I know you guys are good, but I know what it's like to lose a leader like that and have to step up to additional responsibility without notice.

Most big companies work this way, sadly. We've been on eggshells at my work waiting for the usual holiday lay-offs to occur.
Hopefully he can find work with one of GW's competitors and make an impressive run against them!

I remember those days.. I too am a former GW employee, I had 7 years under my belt when I was let go. I enjoyed every minute of those 7 years. I just hope that what little I was able to impart to those I encountered helped them out in some small way. I always loved helping someone fine what they needed and helping others determine what it was that they needed.

Thanks for the supportive comments guys, much appreciated.
@two_heads_talking
I have no doubt that your interaction with customers had an impact on them. Often that impact is greater than we know or can see at the time.
I was reminiscing with a store manager when I was back in Australia a few years ago. His staff member remembered that he had first met the manager in Perth where the manager taught him how to paint the bone on Deathwing Terminators. This triggered a memory in the manager, the methods he used were the ones I'd taught him nine years earlier when I first met the manager, a customer at a store I was managing somewhere else in the country at the time.
Anytime we can impart our knowledge, techniques, and enthusiasm, there's going to be a ripple effect. That in itself is a great reason to be in our great hobby.
Cheers
Dave

Layoffs have started at my company. If you guys are scared where you are, you should try being in financial services right now. Yikes.

How do you paint that stuff?

Anyone care to give a capsule review of the contents?

Wargames Illustrated
As speculation mounts as to our plans for Wargames Illustrated I thought it was time to share some more information and try and stimulate some of that hobby activity that is the key to creating great content. What we have planned is in essence very simple. From issue 260, on newsstands May 21st, you will see the new WI. This new magazine will be 112pages, up from 80, and contain more content than ever before. You will be getting a free frame of the Perry’s new British Napoleonic’s on the cover and inside a wider selection of articles. The added pages allow us to add both some FOW content and another few articles to enhance the selection in the current magazine. We are going to cover every game, scale and period on the market and bring you the best collections of models from around the world. WI offices are based in Nottingham or the “lead belt” as a friend recently told me it has become know given the excess of miniature companies in the city. From the UK the magazine has always had a steady flow of content but to open this up to the global community we have brought on board a new team member who will effectively be the WI man in the US. Roving reporter, hobby nutter and addict of all things miniature related Dave Taylor will support the UK team and help create and drive content from the US and themed for the US.
