Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

By the way...I'd like to mention that considering the amatuer pics and my painting, I'm actually QUITE satisfied with the ratings I've received on my stuff at this current time. (probably due to this thread generating a little interest)

Above 50% is satisfactory for my tabletop stuff....and when my Character models, the ones I actually spend LOTS of time on, are pushing a '7'...and I'm not a professional painter...I'm exited about that.

...so on the other hand...thanx for taking the time to rate my stuff.

I have never failed to seize on 4+ in my life!

Everything we're talking about is in my "Grey Knight" gallery.

I'd like to derail for just a second, and thank Lego Burner for all the tons of hard work going into the gallery system. yes, it clearly is still in its teething phases, but still, anyone can see the sheer amount of work that is going into this for US. Thank you.

I don't mind Shane's grey knights, painting scores are subjective anyhow... as someone who has some inside knowledge of how certain golden demons are judged haha, but over time, as Lego has mentioned, the bell curve of pictures' scores will come into focus, and the 20% scores outside that curve will fall by the wayside.

BTW Shane, Rob Zombie is a better avatar than Busey, don;t change back!

Here's the deal everyone: You need to stop thinking that a public voting system is an absolute science that will accurately rate every model against every other model perfectly, ESPECIALLY when we're only taking about a handful of votes on any given image at this point.

We also aren't going to implement a system to opt-out some of your pictures in the gallery because that destroys the synergistic functionality of the whole thing. It *isnt'* just a gallery like CMON, it is a a dual gallery and picture hosting system. The voting system is NOT just a way to judge your minis and paintjobs against others it is also a key piece of the puzzle in making sure that all images get accurately sorted for searches, etc.

Having clumps of the same images is an issue, but it is one that Legoburner is constantly working on improving. Pretty much every other issue gets solved when more people just start voting more.

Is it strange to have an upainted miniature rated a '7' while your prized mini you spent hours on is voted a '4'? Of course it isn't when we're talking about less than a dozen votes per model in most cases. This is the internet and people can anonymously do whatever they want so you will always get one or two people voting a strange way just because they can. But, as the images get more votes over time, everything will sort itself out. This is especially true because (as Lego and I have said repeatedly), once every image has 5 votes on it (which will eventually happen its just a matter of when) then we can 'flip the switch' and count only the median 80% of the votes for the pictures rankings.

That will provide a much more balanced ranking for every image, but as always, the more votes an image gets the more appropriate the rating will be. Can one angle of a model have a substantially different ranking than another angle of the same model? Of course! People are rating based upon the picture and the angle and how the light hits a model (among other things) can effect the voting. But again, the more votes an image gets, the less variance you'll see.

The whole key is to KEEP VOTING. Don't worry about "hurting people's feelings", JUST VOTE. Please remember that voting, besides being a minute form of feedback is also a very important TOOL to making the gallery into something spectacular. Just like putting a good title on a thread in a forum, voting on a image will help make the system work.

So please, everyone, don't worry about spamming the forum with WIP pics, that's part of the POINT of the gallery. It is both a place to host your pictures AND a place to have your work rated rolled into one awesome system. The one suggestion I would suggest to everyone is LOOK at your pictures ahead of time. If they are out of focus, not rotated correctly, too far away, etc, etc, etc, then don't upload them.

It is much better to go back and take better pictures of your work than to post 20 pictures that don't get your point across. The other thing to remember about the gallery is that if you upload gigantic pictures (you can upload pics up to 10mb in size) people will be able to zoom into the pictures at will to see your work, so you don't need to upload tons of close-ups, just one big picture will work of each angle.

So instead of taking 10 pics of your WIP models that aren't very good or big, just take one of the front and one of the back and make sure they are in focus, and are nice and big and people viewing them will be able to zoom-in and see everything you're talking about using the gallery's zoom feature.

I mostly agree with LunaHound. When I vote on something I found I take it too seriously. I really look at the paint job closely, how much did they highlight? Is that feathered or dry brushed? I judge it against my own skills, what you seen at the competitions, and what the average painter should expect.

legoburner wrote:I knew when I made the switch to mean average voting that there would be a lot of threads like this coming.

Good points made about number of votes. I was shocked when I saw one of my scores, then I saw that it had only 2 votes. You can't really expect any sort of balance voting on your pic unless you've got 20 or more votes.

Well, some people to not seem to agree with that assertion it seems.

Deadshane1 wrote:I just love it that people can vote on a model and give it a crappy score for no other reason than maybe it isn't golden daemon quality or they simply don't like the choice in colors.
Thats an assumption of what they are thinking about. I havent checked out your gallery until now, and I think you might have preferred that I didnt check out your gallery because half of the time painting was non applicable (as in: "N/A". Why do people post pics of primered models that aren't even converted anyways? ) and the other half was very average scoring. And since this thread is about how your models are rated, I feel that those scores frankly were being quite generous.

You see, when people post a blurry as hell pic and expect a decent rating (star trek marine) it is impossible to ascertain whether it is a good paintjob/conversion or not. Its best to not even post a blurry pic, than to post one and to cry about it later because it gets below average ratings.

Deadshane1 wrote:I'm betting the person that rated my LR a 4 in my gallery probably doesnt even water his paints down or know to give reds more than one coat over a black primed model....much less posts his own stuff up here.
You seem so sure of your own painting abilities while scorning other opinions about your work as though the world is universally full of idiots.
Statements like that should make one pause and take a step back to do some evaluation.

Deadshane1 wrote:My UNPAINTED terminator retinue is voted for paint exactly the same as my PAINTED one.
This sounds like grapes that are so sour that they went all the way to spoiling into vinegar completely skipping the part where they were supposed to ferment into wine .

Deadshane1 wrote:Basically people are not even paying attention to models before they vote. Those people should really not be even voting in the first place.
I don't normally like doing this, but I am going to go ahead and repeat myself from 30 seconds ago.

Perhaps if this system is so difficult for you to handle then perhaps you should refrain from posting pics to be rated? Or perhaps just ignore the rating all together?

You seem to feel pretty strongly that you paint pretty darned well, so maybe the scores don't matter as much as you think they do?

Deadshane1 wrote:This is the other thing thats funny about dakka.

I post a thread that basically says "Isnt it weird how my UNPAINTED army has a score of 7 in painting?"

....then WC haterz come on board and say I need to get off my high horse. Stay on topic, we know you hate us....enough on that. I dont understand how what I posted translates into narcisism.

Reread my posts there guys. I dont care what people rate me...I simply find it funny.

(and no, I'm not going to get all of my "gang" to go and rate you poorly....that's not what I'm on about.)

You know what else is funny about Dakka?

Its a public discussion forum where people posts topics for the public to discuss and then get angry when they get responses contrary and unsympathetic to their 'plight'.

I read every post twice prior to your post that I am quoting and unless you know something I don't, the comments seemed to be quite fair. There were no flames directed at you. They stated that they perceived your topic to be about something little more than a rant due to poor scoring of your pics. I find nothing in your topic that disqualifies that perception.

This has little if anything at all to do with your perceived groupthink hatred of your club, and more to do with how you perceive the community as a whole by the way you address the community with such broad and sweeping statements.

Protip: not nearly as many people care about the wrecking crew as you would like to beleive.

all valid points, this man can't be beaten lol
