Get off your high horse do some research. Ok, I'll admit SOME "straight edge" claimers do this so they can claim the high-ground, only to be caught cheatin on their sig other or getting plastered on the streets.
Carefully read what I wrote. I didn't claim that people who consider themselves straight edge are hypocrites. I claimed that most people(I'll add "in my experience" here) with ties to straight edge culture use chemical abstinence as a means of justifying their sense of personal righteousness when engaging in acts of violence.

But for others, it's a true identity search. Those that pick this path, I give props to cuz it aint easy, but if you pull it off, you are the WOMAN or MAN! Sure punk is supposedly anti-establishment, but then again, dig deeper and you find self-identification and an assertion to "I have control over myself".
Ok. It still isn't a philosophy. As I said, its a shallow archetype that is connected to punk culture.
Rggggh!
1) Why you gotta kill my Waaagh! ? Crap, Yeah, I'll agree that there are people across the USA claimin "straight-edge" while they're doing stuff that I would never do. (And YES, I was in the 'punk scene'). But raging and kickin' old people azz for no reason? That's just lame.
2) Huh, don't agree wif you on that. But I have to concede that lots of kids go 'straight-edge' cuz they're punk and don't realize just how hard livin that lifestyle is. Like I said, I lived the punk-rock scene and doing straight-edge is ROUGH. But if you can pull that shizzle off, you are the MAN.

Living straight-edge is ROUGH. No drugs, no alcohol, no nothing. Although GoldenEyeScouts interpretation and myself is different. Just the fact that you abstain from alcohol is hard. It's legal, available, and the vast majority of the populace imbibes in it is hard enough. Back in the day I tried living straight-edge and failed miserably. Many teens say "I'm straight-edge" but have no friggin idea what the hell it means. "I'm straight-edge" but yet I see you smokin the cigs in the back of the bleachers after school. Or smokin pot while you skateboard around the neighborhood.
That aint straight-edge. Straight-edge, in my book, is abstaining from alcohol and drugs.

If I became Straight Edge I probably wouldn't even notice for, like, a month. Different strokes I guess.
Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Religion is something I'm constantly trying to find, as they seem to work for a few weeks, then the help in calming/guiding me stops.
As for bisexuality, I still am. It's notsomething I can change, nor would I want to.

For any minor, living "straight-edge" (no drugs, no alcohol, no smoking) should be TRIVIAL.
Purchase and possession of any of the above are illegal, so following the law shouldn't require anything special, much less a "movement". Mere compliance with a series of laws that require active action to break shouldn't be called "ROUGH".

Whoa, lets pump the brakes on religion. And sexuality. To each his/her own. Just don't take a p**s on my lawn, as the British say. Those very hottie English women's say.....send Elizabeth Hurley my way, gadfunnit!!!

I get the impression it means joining a sub-culture (punk) which is associated with drink and drugs, then joining a sub-sub-culture which rejects some of the sub-culture's mores.
If there are lots of Straight Edge bands it really shouldn't be too difficult, any more than listening to Christian Metal bands.
Being straightedge doesn't make alcohol, sex, and/or drugs any less attractive. My advice is to skip the whole thing. Alot of being straightedge has to do with an adopted identity and with it comes a lot of douchebaggery from both sides.
Manchu wrote:Sooooo, basically lose the "omg str8tedge" teen drama label and conduct yourself like a rational and dignified human being who has some fun every once in a while without trying to hurt people.
Hmm, interesting. I had never heard of this "straight edge" thing before this thread.
I'm almost 19 and I don't drink, smoke, do drugs (I don't even drink coffee ), or engage in casual sex.
It's not for religious reasons (atheist) or due to parental pressure, I just don't do those things. I had never really thought that anyone might construe that as unhealthy.

If you make good decisions and have self control then you don't need a label to hide under. I rarely drink, don't do drugs, and I'm single, but I'm hardly forced into any of those categories (my standards are a bit high for women sometimes). If you don't trust yourself to drink, then drink less, and do it in safer places. Or stop. It doesn't sound like the rest of the categories even apply to you. Applying a label to yourself just gives you a glass ceiling that you don't want to break. It's like a diet, it doesn't change your lifestyle, it just gives you a line in the sand.

Do you remember that time that thing happened?
This is a bad thread and you should all feel bad

Just don't be TFG about it. It's like some vegetarians I know. There are people who just don't eat meat, and there are people get all I DON'T EAT MEAT at you.

I always have difficulty not falling over laughing when someone says they have high standards for women on an internet forum regarding toy soldiers.
What? I can't have a popped collar behind this screen?
Shuma's so cool, he's been on hotchickswithdouchebags.com. He's five popped collars cool.

don't latch on to some pseudo-elitist sub-culture full of poseurs and douchebags.
Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright that The Emperor may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong. That is your oath.
Uhh dude, how about just saying no to drugs and drinking and use your own judgment for everything else? Why follow some subculture when you can just as simply do these things without being "straight edge". You don't need to be "straight edge" to not drink...

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
Also, I always thought the entire point of hugging a girl was so her boobs could squish against your chest a little, no?
Did you know there's even a rap song to go along with it?
If you folk don't keep behaving...I WILL post it.
