After hearing about straight edge on tv, I did a bit of research on it.

To be straight edge, you abstain from drugs, alchohol, cigarettes, sex, all that good stuff.

As some of you may remember from older posts, I talked about drinking occasionaly.
Well, I found I needed a drink to get to sleep last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.
I know this doesn't make me an alcoholic, but it did frighten me some.

I have two uncles who are alcholics, one aunt who is a functioning alchoholic, my grandma and great aunt were alchoholics as well.

I already plan on quiting sneaking drinks for awhile, just because I'm afraid that Imight soon need to have more when I do sneak them.

As for drugs, I only take the onesmy doctor prescribes, and only how they're prescribed.
Smoking made me want to die, so I'm good on that end.
And my chances of getting laid are as good as nothing.

Are any users here straight edge, or know someone who is?

Just don't emulate the less desirable elements of straight edge culture (violent proselytism), and you should be fine.

Don't give up sex! No matter who you are there is always a chance to get laid.

Besides do you want to be twenty something and totally inexperienced?

The general idea that most people I've know who are "straight edge" isn't so much "giving up sex",it's giving up the "random hook up", "anything for booty" mentality, maintaining your self respect and not "jumping through hoops" just because someone wiggles their backside at you.
As far as sex in a "relationship",not against the straight edge "rules".

Sooooo, basically lose the "omg str8tedge" teen drama label and conduct yourself like a rational and dignified human being who has some fun every once in a while without trying to hurt people.

Useful advice: your family has a history of alcohol problems. Take extreme care when using alcohol.

I doubt you needed a drink in order to go to sleep. You're young, you don't need sleep. I'm young, I don't need it either.

I think it's a noble thing to do GES. Too much emphasis put on drinking and sex and drugs in American culture. I'm 33 and while I don't consider myself straight edge (as I did do the whole one night stand every weekend party crap for a while) for me it's more that I'm just too old and too mature to play those stupid college games.

I have a future flame I'm trying to get with so I'm not looking for one nighters; never got into drugs (always thought that was a stupid thing to do even before getting it brow-beaten into me from parents and teachers) and I think I've consumed 6 beers in the past 4 months (I haven't even drank enough to get buzzed since my bday last year).

Alcohol, as much as people joke about it, is not a joking matter. I don't advocate abolishing it as it's not a bad thing in moderation. It's just like any potentially addicting thing, you just need to learn control. Also, if you stay mature or become more mature alcohol will eventually lose it's appeal (consuming mass quantities of it anyway).

Good job though and I only wish more teens had your attitude (least bout the drugs and drinking part).

Still not getting this bit about needing to go out of one's way to be a decent human being. I have just as many alcoholics as Scout in my family (similar degrees of relation, too) and have never had a problem with alcohol because it's not actually a big deal. The idea that you would need alcohol to go to sleep at your age is totally preposterous and I'm sure overblown. Alcoholism, sexual promiscuity, and illegal drug use are not just problems in and of themselves. They are symptoms of a larger issue with self-esteem. Latching onto any scene, including straitedge--whether that involves magic marker x's on the backs of your hands or wearing a Jonas Brothers purity ring--is yet another symptom of that problem. Be your own person, respect yourself, treat others with dignity and (at least) sincerity. You don't need to be part of some faddy clique based on empty-minded quasi-theology and self-help to do those simple things.

More useful advice: Never label yourself. Let other people do that.

Maybe GES would feel better if he did. Yeah most of those 3 things are done due to esteem issues but if being part of a clique makes him/her (still not sure of GES sex) than who are we to judge.

Some of those straight edgers can be perceived as wack jobs but than I perceive most Catholics and Jehovas and Mormons wack jobs (not trying to offend here).

Not really sure i'd call it going out of his/her way. GES asked for advice, not a lecture on self-esteem and how those that pledge to be straightedge are "empty minded quasi theologists." That kind of talk isn't going to raise GES esteem any if they already have esteem issues (and being a teen I'm sure GES has had or has esteem problems).

Humans. With opinions.

Or it might. The mind does fantastic things when given information and allowed to reach a conclusion.

Just to put some of what I said about quasi-theology into context, I am a practicing Catholic. There's no need to go too far down this road and get a thread lock, just throwing it out there (once again) so I'm not mistaken for an angry internet atheist.

As for the lecture, that's my advice. Call it a lecture if you want. Better an eight sentence lecture on dakka than getting mixed up with a real set of self-esteem problems associated with trying to submerge one's already-vulnerable identity into (what I consider to be) a suspicious social scene when the goal is to head off merely potential self-esteem problems at the pass.

Thanks for the compliments. I don't think I have the willpower to go "str8edge 4 lif", nor would I want too. I do enjoy alcohol, but I only recently learned of how
many people in my family are alcoholics. I just think that doing this and staying out of bad stuff will certainly help me grow into a
Semi Functional Adult.

I've never really considered myself low on selfesteem, as I never really cared what people (my age) thought of me. Why should I? Their just as incompetent and immature as me, so let other (hopefully) more mature people's opinions matter to me.

Dead on. Your peers are for having fun with not for leading you around by the nose.

Straightedging is a waste of time, as you learn nothing but abstenation, when what you are looking for is moderation.

Plus in my experience it's all about ego inducing self aggarndisment. Nothing worse than trying to enjoy a pint, a cigarette and a chinwag in the pub, with some straightedge arsehole criticising my choice of beverage and pastime.

I don't intend to become one of these preachy type feths. Can't stand them.

Also, wtf is a chinwag?

A chat. When you're talking your chin moves up and down, like a dog's tail wagging.
What age are you GES, if you don't mind me asking? If you're under 18 I'd say not drinking, doing drugs or having sex is probably a pretty good idea anyway. You don't need to have the straight edge label to do that.

Yeah, well 15 year olds shouldn't be drinking or having sex.
There's always something better to do.

Then I have yet to find it.

On the subject of sex, I ain't been getting none, and won't be for some time.

Read a book, watch a film, go for a walk, paint some miniatures. No way do you need beer to enjoy yourself. And it's illegal and unhealthy for someone your age anyway.

There is nothing wrong with underage drinking. GES, If you have an xbox 360, then play Halo 3 custom games while drunk. Its very fun.

I dont think i could give up booze.. I dont smoke or take drugs, but not the drink.. Its hard to do it for me because all of my friends do it, and if i didnt drink, id hardly see them considering they all spend most of their free time in the pub.

I drink session bitter if ive got to work in the morning though, does that count?
