FFIX had a fairly disappointing ending. One of the shortest I can recall in a FF game.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

The Final Fantasy games final bosses' from 7 on do scale with level, so if you grind your characters up to level 99 but dont get anything better in terms of gear than what you get from said grinding or main storyline then the final bosses will be marginally difficult, if you just speed through the game and fight the final bosses with minimal level they will be cakewalk.
In either case, the optional bosses are always more difficult, I spent hours upon hours to beat Emerald and Ruby from FF7, and Godaweful amounts of time to beat Ozma, and a metric-stupid-crapton of hours to beat the Ultimate optional boss from X (I forgot his name, its the one where you have to capture of every monster in the entire game) those boss fights require specific gear, with specific strategies, luck, practice, and patience. The final boss fights usually just require you to be awake, and know what button is "heal" and what button is "attack"

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

I don't understand why people think Halo 3's ending was bad. Didn't it totally wrap up Master Chief's story? You did watch the cutscene after the credits, right?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I thought the ending to Halo 3 was ok. Halo 2 really annoyed me... I just finished the final level (not realising it was the final level) and was really pumped to play on some more.

And it just... ended.

I was like "WTF?!?! The game is only part way though!"

How many have you played?
Other than the original Final Fantasy, the end boss is rarely anything compared to the optional boss(es).

I've played all of them except the online ones.

And just like someone said, I've got a very direct playstyle, going through the story by the shortest route, this way I'm constantly pushing the envelop of what my party might survive. Going side-quest hunting usually makes the main quest extremely easy to go through which is something I personally dislike. However, this often means I show up at the doorstep of the Big Evil Bad Guy a little bit underpowered you could say. Only then (after I've had a downright spanking) do I seriously dive into the side quests as for me they directly tie into the main quest from that moment on. The main quest usually being to save (a large part of) the world, which I tend to take somewhat serious as a plot. It just feels wrong to go of on a hunt for the magic boots of Zaldarim when the whole world is at stake.

Often I then play through the game a second time (though at a later time) and take the full tour.

I also hated the ending of God of War 2. Not because it was bad (It was actually fairly epic) but because it's one of those endings that make you want to punch a baby for the cliffhanger...

God of War 2 was an AMAZING game. Purely epic in many of its moments, and very dark at times (I mean jeez, you're playing as the harbinger of the fall of Greek mythology. How freaking cool/epic/dark is that?)

Also, to be honest, I have to say the ending to Final Fantasy: Tactics Advance. I loved the game, though the whole aspect of learning abilities through weaponry was kinda silly, but I hated that the ending was basically "And then one of the coolest fantasy worlds was destroyed. Back to reality."

Killzone 2. Its not so much that its a bad ending, or that it was poorly animated. No, for me it was just TOO good of an ending. Brilliant "cliffhanger" and the grimdark of the game itself is completely assured in any sequels.

Did you not just want to grab Rico and kick his stupid fat head in though.

"DAMMIT RICO! You stand in front of me when I'm firing, you have the cheek to be surprised at being shot at despite constantly standing in the open, annoyingly begging to be ressed after being slain through your own stupidity, you have a two-dimensional racist character, you lead to the death of one of the better characters on our side, you had the audacity to be in this game as opposed to any of the three awesome characters from the original game AND you just killed Brian Cox, who was by far the coolest character in the whole damn game!"

I hope he dies in the first minutes of Killzone 3 (or even better between games) simply to spare us his moronic presence.

Fable 2... Possibly one of the best game on the 360, but the ending... it seems that every fable game's first draft sucks and then Lost chapters comes out and fixes it. But until then Fable 2 has three very boring endings.

Fable 2? One of the best games on 360?

In any case, I'm not sure why Borderlands gets so much flak for its ending. Were people really following the storyline anyway? I got to the end and was like "who's this Russian chick? lol, oh well" The rest did not really phase me except that I was only fifteen or so hours into the game, which is however pretty par for the course for a FPS even when it pretends to have RPG elements.

Gamers don't like being lied to. Borderlands is a nice example of this. You could call it a twist but the lack of good rewards makes it hardly a great ending.

@Brook: Er, every game has a final boss. The big "reward" at the end in terms of narrative is pretty meaningless in terms of gameplay. I could understand needing that reward if the gameplay had been geared to narrative storytelling, like regarding the original gaff in Fallout 3, but Borderlands was not like that at all. Rather than showing that gamers don't like being lied to I think it shows that the Borderlands writers had a pretty lame lie and that gamers are super dependent on video game tropes.

It was completely anti-climactic.
Spoiler:
Anyone could see that the Vault wasn't necessarily a treasure trove without having it spelled out to them. The end fight confirmed this suspicion, but without ever actually building up to it in any meaningful way. The best you get is a statement from Tannis that it might be a containment device of some sort. There is no reason to think about the destroyer other than "oh crap a monster". It came out of nowhere with no attachment or suspense and went away just as quickly. The thing literally sat there, flailed around, and ate bullets until it stopped moving. Wow, what a threat. It certainly didn't seem like something that needed to be kept locked away in a vault that arbitrarily can open every 200 years, but only if someone is dumb enough to use the key in the first place. What happens if someone doesn't open the vault when it comes time? Is it even necessary to have a key? It's a poor ending on any sort of academic point. That isn't the reason anyone played the game, certainly, but it doesn't mean that the ending wasn't bad on it's own faults.

I like Borderlands, despite it's faults because the core method of enjoyment the game provides is done well enough to be moderately addicting and interesting, especially with multiplayer support.

Of course, I may just be bitter because my reward for beating the end was a small cash reward and a couple of trash repeaters and sniper rifle.

Exactly. I'm also finding new game + rather unwanted, though it has probably been put there for future DLC content and the sequel: Borderworlds.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Borderlands belongs in a thread called "good gameplay, poor storylines" and it could be joined by almost every other FPS. Its ending was no better or worse than the rest of the storyline, which is to say not at all a factor in the game's success. While storyline can make or break a RPG it hasn't mattered much as of yet for a FPS/action game. Borderlands, in other words, is not the game that successfully merges the genres. I think Force Unleashed comes a lot closer, even though its leveling system left a lot to be desired.

I agree, i expected a fight that was at least as hard as fighting a troll, but he was just as easy to beat as a civilian, I thought that it was harder to get each of the three other heroes than it was to beat the last boss. It really annoyed me cos the whole game was so awesome, and you kinda expect an ending to match it

I preferred Fable 1, the ending wasn't much better, because if you chose the sword for ultimate power, you never got a chance to even use it!

I would imagine it has to do with the fact that Price turned his back on Shepherd and launched a nuke at DC that (unknown to Shepherd until the blast) was set to go off in the atmosphere and cause EMP.

Remember, Shepherd lost his 30,000 strong Battle group in an atomic blast in CoD4, so that was probably a huge "You son of a . I'm going to your corpse and then take a on your cold, dead face" moment to him.

That, and the fact that he wanted to be the one seen as the hero that saved America. Not some shadow organization.

But yea, they did indeed to a pretty rough job of linking it all together smoothly.
