Oklahoma City, Ok.

i think the difference is timing. during the 1970s when Star Wars came out, there wasn't alot of science fiction movies that could hold a candle to it. skip ahead to the late 1980s when 40k came out and there's alot more to compete with it. it's just another splash in the ocean to some people.

that and Ewoks. if 40k could have brought in Ewoks...

edited because i got 40k's birthdecade wrong.

but still no Ewoks....

40K would be star wars big IF they can take the intro movie for the first Dawn of War, and stretch it out to a 2 hour mega battle, featuring all the games races in neverending conflict.

But wow!! that would cost a lot of money to make/produce.

hehe- you can look up in youtube some 40k independant actual movie.. but you WILL lose braincells just for being in the room while it plays.

The way I see it, something is only as "nerdy" as you make it yourself. For instance (and i'm not trying to call anyone out here) someone who OBSESSES CONSTANTLY over <insert "nerdy" hobby(s)> and makes his whole life revolve around it/them, is a nerd. Its another story if you're a "normal" guy/girl with "normal" interests who also happens to enjoy <insert "nerdy" hobby here>. Case in point, at my last base several of my buddies loved playing a D&D style game called RoleMasters. I played a few times with them, and I was expecting it to be like the stereotypical D&D nerd kinda thing, but it was actually awesome, mostly because it was like watching D&D being played by fratboys.

DM: "you have arrived at the village of whatever"
player 1: "I GO TO THE TAVERN AND GET SH!TFACED"
player 2: "IS THERE ANYONE HERE WHO NEEDS TO BE KILLED?"
player 3: "I TAKE A HUGE DUMP ON THE FIRST PERSON I ENCOUNTER"
DM: "I hate you guys"

Wasn't nerdy at all, in fact, we attracted tons of other people simply because they heard all the laughing and screams of WTF, and decided they had to get in on it too.

bwhahahaa. it's because GW is a little bit stingy.

They're not interested in movies.

as it is, the games generated alot of spam, things on how to improove characters in the hobby based on the outways of the DOW experience.

Basically, people will start saying (after they've seen movie and played) "hey, why can't a Space marine kill 50 orks in game if he can in the movies."

Also, it's important to remember that Star wars was a book before a game/movie/modeling hobby

Games and movies out proportion modelling, worse then they do books.

if this is difficult to understand PM me, and I'll try to explain myself better.

And yet, they're working on a second movie.

@Guardsmantom: That's a pretty bad excuse, because there are plenty of people who think Star Wars Fandom is just as, if not more, nerdy as 40K.

star wars wasn't a book first, ITS A FILM. If GW don't like films why are they making one, i think that the IP's of GW will become a big force in entertainment, in its many forms over the next decade.

Think about it, that book remained true to the fluff of 40K while managing to be both upbeat and humorous. Pit them against an Ork WAAAAAGH! and boom: instant hilarity in addition to epic Guard vs Ork horde action. It even has HOT CHICKS (Amberly and Col Kasteen) So many great characters too, Cain (of course) JURGEN, Amberly Vail, Col Kasteen, the list goes on.
What say you?

Make a video game based on Ciaphas Cain similar to Rachet and Clank but instead it'll be Ciaphas and Jurgen

When I explain what LARP to some random person the first thing they say is not, "Wow, you are a nerd."

I think the popularity of Battlestar Galactica is evidence that media based in the 40k universe could be very successful. None of the characters in Battlestar Galactica are entirely good or entirely evil and I think that level of sophistication is needed in a successful 40k series, miniseries, or movie.

Culture today is much different than it was three decades ago. Star Wars WAS the “grimdark” alternative to Star Trek. Today Star Wars isn’t dark at all and Star trek looks like Candyland in comparison. For nearly a decade now we’ve been inundated with real time news and images of wars raging across the globe, piracy, economic turmoil, oppression, terrorism, and every manner of horror imaginable.

Had Star Wars originated in this new decade it would have gone nearly unnoticed. The culture has just changed.

I think a 40k series based on the life of an Imperial Guard platoon in the Armageddon front, fighting in the Iron Hammer campaign, or even the battle of Macragge would do well.

I for one would LOVE to see a “Band of Brothers” style series depicting the raising of an Imperial Guard regiment in preparation for the engagement against Hive Fleet Behemoth.

Eh?

Star Wars is spread out over so many books/movies/TV shows/Christmas specials/comics/video games that it is very hard to get a full view of it. Also, there is a ton of contradictory "fluff" because authors don't talk to each other or seemingly the company very much. And then there are all those books that are completly invalidated because they were written before I II and III came out, and talk about stuff that doesn't exist anymore.

Warhammer 40000, on the other hand, is more compact and non-contradictory. Yeah, there are exeptions, like very old books, but they are few. And since the authors all work for the company and the company is rather paranoid about someone getting something wrong, the books all fit together much better than the Star Wars books do.

also, the idea of an IG version of Band of Brothers (provided it is done properly) would quite possibly be the most awesome thing ever.

Because the "toy" sales for the game are not done by Hasbro.

Hasbro has market dominance for SF related action-figures and toys. This is why LFL continue to let them have the licence to print money.

GW want to control it all themselves.

Unfortunately for them, they have nowhere near enough market control to get the public notice.

They did good to boost D&D's popularity though (well, if you can call D&D a good thing - I don't). However, without it, it might never have reached enough prominence to be bought out by Hasbro. So D&D players have GW to thank for Wizkids stuffing their game up (not like TSR couldn't have done it themselves, though).

Because we’re here,lad...

I honestly believe that this decade will be the one where 40k will be brought to life through film, and not just with 'Ultramarine' (When is that being released?). The sucess of the Black Library novels will tip GW over the edge to make,or at least give permission,to make a decent monster epic. It's inevitable. Who would not want to see 2 metre tall super-men kicking fuedal planet dwellers teeth in,in full 3D? Look at 'Avatar', it came from a loose story brought to life by the King of action Sci-fi. Now its made more money than the Bible. The 40k universe has more than enough to make 30 epics of death and despair and you have an awesome excuse to route for the bad guys.....

I love those little moments between the first kiss and the pepper spray...

George Frickin' Lucas is also three (and is sufficient explanation for why the prequel trilogy wasn't as well done. Empire was the best, but GL wasn't ALLOWED to direct it - and RotJ had him fighting the director every step of the way).
