No disagreement there. Manchu wrote:He's just not a romantic figure like Sanguinius or the Lion or a tragic figure like Dorn or Magnus. He is the loyal Horus.
And this is my problem: I am a romantic. He may not be a romantic Primarch, but I find the Ultramarines to be an exceptionally romantic chapter. They embody nobility and sacrifice whilst promoting the betterment of humanity. I draw a line between them and the Knights of St. John. That being said, if you consider me to be like Guilliman, than I find that to be a compliment of the highest order.

Hmm, I see them as stoics after their Primarch's heart. Their chief talent, for example, has always been logistics. Now that seems boring compared to the insane courage of the Space Wolves, the dogged determination of the White Scars, the brutal strength of the Iron Hands, etc, etc,but it wins wars not just battles. It's what made Horus go white before ordering Guilliman to leave Saturn for Calth. It's what wrote the Codex Astartes and has prevented another heresy for ten thousand years. Yet they get pawned off as boring.

Interesting. I will have to re-read my codex fluff, maybe I am inferring to much. Manchu wrote:Now that seems boring compared to the insane courage of the Space Wolves
I have almost no respect for that chapter. They are easily the most selfish SM chapter out there. Manchu wrote:the dogged determination of the White Scars

As I always say, think smarter not harder. Manchu wrote:It's what wrote the Codex Astartes and has prevented another heresy for ten thousand years. Yet they get pawned off as boring.
They are hardly boring, but they are easy targets for the reasons you suggested on your thread, however undeserving of criticism they are. But until I revisit some of their fluff, I refuse to believe that they are nothing if not romantic. Calgar especially embodies the virtues of nobility and sacrifice.

Wolves . . . selfish? They're easily the most compassionate Chapter, even compared to the Sallies. If you want selfish--or at least self-absorbed--among the loyalists, think DA.
Funny that you should mention Calgar. Lord Macragge has always struck me as the most sangfroid character in 40k. That guy would make an Inquisitor look like a teddy bear. And most frightening of all, you'd know Calgar was good. If you're fighting against him, you're the evil one. Against an Inquisitor, you could never be sure.

Manchu wrote:Wolves . . . selfish?
Their rejection of the Codex Astartes because they don't like it, and other reasons, are the reason for my thoughts. I have only seen them exhibit conditional compassion, whereas the Ultramarines do not fight for the thrill of battle, they fight for the sake of others if they must.
Manchu wrote:They're easily the most compassionate Chapter, even compared to the Sallies.
Would it surprise you that I nearly voted for Vulkan? The generosity of the Salamanders made me nearly vote for him.
Manchu wrote:If you want selfish--or at least self-absorbed--among the loyalists, think DA.
Self absorbed is most accurate.
On a side note I am finishing up a short story about the Ultramarines, hopefully it will be done by the end of this weekend. If I am not embarrassed by my horrendous writing, I may post it up on Dakka.

Sallies give speeches about being nice to civilians. Wolves nearly go to war with the Administratum over it. I've often wondered why the Wolves do not follow the Codex. The answer I've come up with is that they were never meant to. The Emperor designed them to be his last resort, attack dogs to set on another Legion if push came to shove (see Prospero). The Wolves were bred for ferocity against enemies and warmth toward the loyal--man's best friend, if you will. They were not bred to function otherwise, hence the immediate problems with geneseed experienced by the poor Wolf Brothers. I've put fiction on dakka. No one ever comments. Who knows if it's even read. Point is, might as well give it a whirl. You will have an audience of at least one.

This.
Space Wolves doesnt afraid of anything.
They refused to follow the index astartes not because of any selfish reason, but out of loyalty to the only 2 individuals that the members of the Space Wolves actually pledge loyalty too: The Emperor and Russ.
The Emperor never said to follow the index astartes, and Russ never said that he would do what his "brothers" told him, he obeys his master and his own conscience.

Pre-heresy, he spent the entire time building temples to get his daddy's attention. Emps was more than a little creeped out by the hero worship and gave him a stern talking to. Lorgar spent the next few months crying in his (throne) room about how his daddy dosn't love him and all he wants is somone to venerate with all his heart. Cue Chaos, who are billed as demanding veneration, which, I guess to lorgar sounds pretty good.
Then he starts the whole heresy by being a backstabbing, ear whispering wormtounge of a primarch.

Yes, that's what I said. He lets himself be assassinated because if he himself was censured for engaging in acts of terror, and assassination is an act of terror. That the Imperium would commit an act of terror against a threat such as himself justified his own actions in using terror on their behalf.

I would like to be Alpharius, who I have always loved for his tactics and actions, both being very close to the way I play in almost any game I can do so. I've always been one for using things deftly than simple brute force and liked the idea of spies and operatives and having specialists everywhere. The fact that I am known amongst friends for having a love of scalies in general and fascinating mythological ones in particular (and hydras definitely count) doesn't hurt.
The other I would like to be is possible Sanguinius, but that is mostly admiration for what his actions and morals were and less any particular facet of his personality.
In truth? Well, I'm not entirely sure, but I feel the closest fit is Fulgrim. I have a strong perfectionist streak. I wind myself into a mess when this fails me and don't cope well with failure at all. I am interested in painting, drawing, sculpting, music and writing, but unpredictably and I'll be completely engrossed in one for a few weeks before stopping dead and moving to something else for no apparent reason (which is a good part of the reason by conversions take so long, but I'm going to be arrogant and say why they end up being so good once finished). The same deftness that I admire in Alpharius comes back here, in that a fight should not end in an all out brawl but in a single perfect blow. I have few friends but keep them close. I love sensations of all kinds... and would dearly love to elaborated on that and started to before realising that it may not be appropriate for the forum; lets just say I have some sensualist tendencies. And I just incredibly distraught when the floor is ripped out from under me and absolutely everything seems to be going wrong, and am definitely willing to take an easy stopgap measure of protection or way of stopping the emotional pain.
Erm, now that I think about it, I'd have to conclude Fulgrim is the best fit. Perhaps too well.
And the majority of the above reasons are why I know damned well that if the 40k universe was crossed into our own I would be in serious trouble; I would almost certainly end up falling to Slaanesh despite rationally knowing what a terrible idea that would be.
