I'm sorry sir, but as a 12 year old with a lot of time on his hands, I can assure you that that statement isn't true. I personally enjoy only daydreaming about massive armies, but I'll be quite happy dragging it up to a minimum of 1500 points, thank you.

I voted No for the reasoning that we're talking about 11-17 year olds and they don't have the disposable income to buy such a "large" army. Everyone now and then I see a parent who's throwing out the cash to make "Little Timmy" happy for their little war game but to be honest I mostly see a lot of parents discourage their kids from playing something like Warhammer. Its the fear that their child will grow up to be a nerd or geek (I know my own parents did this when I was younger and trying to play). Also I notice a lot of parents AND new, younger players will purchase the first few models then stop completely because its such an expensive hobby.

I will admit however, and I think I speak for everyone when I say this, that if I find a good deal on a decent sized army NIB on Ebay or the like that I'll purchase it immediately since my long term goal is to build a large force anyway. I have only done this for my CSM.

@bd1085- Actually, the demograph you are refering to has the highest amount of disposable income of anyone. All it takes is a papere route or something similar, then 100% of their money can be poured into the hobby.

Yes, I think that, mostly kids at my club within the age of 10 and 12 seem to be the ones playing 2v2 Apocalypse games after collecting for about 2 months, then becoming bored and leaving the hobby.

I personally have only ever been able to play Apoc. with roughly 9 other people.

But then again, not everyone has a disposable income :(

i would say YES, but then im eternally greatful for the short attention spans of the youngsters and the cash of their parents. They end up bunging it all on ebay to buy a games console or a bmx. I snap up the bargains and everyones happy!

Good point. I see a equal mixture of both where I play but there are a handful of repetitive youngsters who continuously buy stuff with all their money.

Young Gamers.....Now I got nothing against them but all that grey plastic bought on impulse makes me shudder I never personally field unpainted mini's it looks a bit silly. I have about 1000pts of Space Marines unpainted/unassembled and about the same in guard they wont be fielded (When I play) unpainted.

While a paper route might be 100% disposable, it's 100% of peanuts.

The demographic who really has money to burn are working single adult males. Sure, it's less than 100%, because they need to make a little rent & gas money, but they can drop shedloads of money on electronics and other toys. And they can do it for months and months. Who's buying the $1000+ PC gaming rigs, the RC cars, the A/V systems? It's not the kids with their paper routes. It's the young dudes.

I don't consider myself that young (26) but this month have spent £350 on an IG army because I wanted it now. Unfortunately this means I have to paint six tanks, 1 Valkyrie, and 100 odd soldiers and five characters. I did this with my Empire army too d'oh.

Oh and related to the above post I am married with my own house but not the courage to tell my wife. Guulp

haha sorry i definatly LOL'd at the last part of that post!!!

I do agree tho, i am a 25 year old, single working professional, and i have seen myself some months buying a few hundred quid of mini's in one go, got a 4,000 points high elf army and a 6,000 - 7,000 point space marine army.. it takes PAINFULLY long to paint!, but i'm getting there, i'm lucky i have a group of guys i game with who all motivate each other to paint! and make our stuff look good! aswell as playing well.. its horribly addictive, i wonder if there is a wargaming methadone equivilent for the warcrack!

The stereotype that all young gamers are like that is silly.

While unpainted minis don't look good on the table its better than not fielding something just because. I only have about 1 day a week that I can spend a couple hours painting. This makes painting an entire army take a very very long time. If I only played what I had fully painted I could only play 500 pts of Tau and 300ish pts of Orks. I will go with the slow method of painting since I get vastly more enjoyment from playing the game. That also lets my friends see my army progress.

The greater good needs some moo.

Oh ok...... But I speak from personal experience (When I was 12 and starting out) as well being that I used to be like that too every game needed to be mine and id irratically jump from game system to game system.

I agree. My friend has about 3k points for all of his armies together. His brother who just started (and who plays nids) wants to be as good as his older brother and gets in over his head. Also younger players in general do not think of the hobby as an art, painting and modeling. They don't paint their units and people think that they got the wrong idea.

I'd have to disagree with this notion as a whole. The youngsters (mostly between 12 and 14) at my FLGS usually take great pride in their armies, one of them being a Young Blood 2009 GD winner (I'm hesitant to discuss names without consent, but he painted Legolas, I think). One or two of them paint much better than I do, which I will admit without shame. They mostly seem pretty aware of their armies and choices.

Well, I started at 15. Not too long ago. I got Space Marines, simply because my neighbor bought some Tau before I did, and we didn't want to have the same army. I still hate him for it, but I beat him every chance I get.
Anyway, our younger brothers took Eldar and Orks, so we have a nice variety. The thing about the two younger ones, especially MY brother, is that he refused to buy the codex, because he wanted models. Until I bought AoBr twice and told him he could have the orks if he got a codex. We were playing with a $2 Goodwill copy of the previous ork Codex, my own beautiful up-to-date SM codex , etc...
I didn't step into anything TOO rash. 60% of my army is painted to a very VERY basic degree, and the other parts I don't use much. I also play fairly competitively and beat all the other people I play against about 75% of the time. Speaking for myself, young people are certainly capable of thinking clearly and not making rash decisions. However, I've never had much money, so that could be a factor as well.
