Thanks very much.
The tactical sgt face was pale flesh (VGC) with an ogryn flesh wash. I'm quite pleased with it. Complete fluke really, I wasn't happy with either the paint job or the face of the DV sgt so I lopped his head off and replaced with the hooded head from a Ravenwing upgrade sprue.

Last week I had this horrible winter bug which is sweeping the UK. Whilst it was fun sitting watching England Beating the All Blacks, having the horrible bug that was doing the rounds sucked.
I did manage to finish the Deathwing but that was all.
It was a bit of a rush job and there's bits I know need tidying but it does tick all my boxes for "looking good on the gaming table tm"
This weekend I moved on to Ravenwing and I'm not delighted with these as I was feeling the need for one of those table mounted magnifying lenses to try and get the the thin highlighting lines narrower. Still I think you'll agree that they look effective as a unit..
I'm planning to run a squad with an apothecary included, to represent this model I painted one of the bikers with a white helmet and shoulderguard trim. IT definitely stands out from the squad
Another view of the sgt, I like this model an awful lot. Happily I have another one to paint (along with another 5 ravenwing bikes)
I'm pleased with the contrast I got with the purple and with the nice pale skintone of his noggin. I wanted a pale and slightly aged look. I think It might do with a little grey mixed in to a final highlight.
Finally as this force has been thrown together for a charity tournament in February (Originally the tournament was last weekend, the in january) I put together some quick n dirty objective markers..
Thoughts? Comments?

So...
I've been busy. Finished another tactical squad which is nice... I've also finished a librarian, there's still a little bit of touching up needed but I'm quite happy with him.
I also snaffled a whirlwind and command squad from ebay for under a tenner. I discovered why when it arrived. I've cleaned it up and given it a fresh coat of paint and weathered where the previous owner had added "battle damage".....
The matt varnish has killed the highlights a little so I think I'll go back and give them a bit of love.
Finally..
I got some vallejo pigments the other day. I picked up the mud weathering set as the rust set was out of stock. I thought I'd have a play with them even though the brighter rust shades weren't included.
I had an old defiler which a friend had won on ebay for £5. It's taken a bit of a beating and been put together with about 5 tubes of polystyrene cement it seems but it made an interesting canvas for me to go mad with my pigments. I base coated it silver, off tan and then hit it with a wash of nuln oil / agrax earthshade and then when that was dry,, went mad with the pigments. in 20 minutes of playing I took it from washed to below. I was rather pleased and just hit it with a spray coat of varnish to fix the pigments in place..
As you can see, reaper autocannon barrels weren't included, I'll need to make some and add them. (I call this my "show me on the dolly where the bad child assembled and then broke you" shot!)
Flamers work better when modelled at a jaunty angle. (allegedly)
Yes the original owner did put the arms on upside down. -sigh-

Thanks for the comments guys.
I was going for a bright daft old school look on the orks. When I was first getting into the hobby, the bright red evil sunz and bright yellow bad moonz really attracted me but I built a space wolf army.
When I got back into 40k I was supposed to be building an IG force, then aobr was released, I saw the deffkoptas and that was that. I wanted to paint them to reflect the original ork forces that I saw, hence brighter skin tones and lots of contrast between yellows and blacks.
My ork force is paused slightly at the minute although I keep looking at my stompa and thinking that it needs to be painted
On the subject of weathering, can't recommend vallejo pigments enough. I've got some Tamiya weathering kits and they're greasier and more difficult to apply. The Vallejo pigments go on very easily but come loose quite easily so you need to fix them with a varnish or some form of medium.

there's a tiny bubble on his nose which is why his face looks a little michael jackson like.
A bit frustrating but not much I can do about it.
I thought he should have the cream shoulderpads as I thought Terminator Armour = Deathwing and therefore rather than green, bone white for the armour.
To tie the terminator into the army I've gone with the dark green robes and the red casing on the bolter.
I was going to do a green skull and wings on the chest plate but it just didn't work and there wasn't enough contrast between the robes and the emblem so I changed it to a bone colour. I'm not sure that worked particularly well.
I'm also finding the new washes (nuln oil/agrax earthshade) nowhere near as good as the old ones. I'm very tempted to move away from them and try the vallejo washes range instead.

Today I've got a Dystopian Legions based update, yet another project on the go. I'm trying to finish a starter box this week before I go back to work..
I've finished my test Ashigaru...
According to the internetz, the symbol on the back banner is faithful or loyal. I may have butchered it slightly
I'm quite pleased with it. Took about 2 hours this morning from start to finish

Annnnnnd the Ashigaru are finished. They're a bit rough and ready. I noticed as I started washing that there's some quite nasty flaws on some of the casts. Slight imperfections on the critical areas like faces which are incredibly difficult to get to.
I've also noticed that the hands are malformed or just massively tiny on many of the sculpts.
Either that or maybe I've been ruined by massive hand syndrome of "heroically scaled miniatures"
I dunno...
These are quick n dirty paintjobs. I think I spent no more than 5 hours on the whole unit..
I'll be finishing the officer and hero tomorrow, I may get the ninjas done too.

If you look at your own, real-life hand, it should be about the size of your face when flattened out, and almost as long as your forearm.

Well based on that, they suffer from tiny hand syndrome.
it's a shame because the theme and universe is cool. I can overlook these details but I felt I should mention them in case anyone else is thinking about investing in the miniatures.
I'm happy with my purchase but I couldn't recommend the models (in spite of how cool they look) without reservation. I've had to spend alot of time drilling and pinning ridiculously thin arms trying to ensure that the arms don't snap off as soon as you look at them on the ninjas and characters

So I've finished the Starter Set contents.
I hope this game is good. I'm not happy with the commander, mainly because I rushed him but also because the pose seems a little awkward to me. I think I might strip him and redo him in a similar scheme to my officer as I prefer his more natural and better fitting uniform look.
The ninjas (some of which are 4 piece sculpts, yes 4. PITA to put together) are really nice looking but again difficult to get the best out of. I think they'll do for now but again, may go into the dip at some point when I have time to make them look the way i want them to.
The officer I'm happy with for a gamin piece. They all look good from 12" away which consider I've painted the lot in around 12 hours from start to finish isn't bad going I guess..
We'll start with the Commander..
The Section Officer
See what I mean about the lighter colour uniform working "better" I dunno.. The commander and hero stands out and the red accents keep the army looking similar but... I still think a lighter uniform would look better on him.
The Ninjas
The ashigaru section with officer..
and the starter set..

HI All
It's been quiet in here of late. I've been suffering from a combination of painting burn out, painting adhd and had some groovy RL stuff distracting me from my models. I've also contracted an unhealthy fascination with MW:O .
Since the start of April I've been working on a new Daemons of Chaos army which I intend to build to 1000pts first, and then expand up to 2400 pts before the end of the year.
This is where I am at the moment..
I've finished my Plague Drone unit now, although I'll probably do some touch ups on the plague drone riders. I may revisit the swords, I'm not sure I like the brown swords.
I'll try and get a better snap as I can see that the lighting on this one is terrible.
I've also completed the first 10 plague bearers for my unit of 20/30.
These models are so much fun to paint, I can totally see why people rave about the new kit and how much fun it is to paint.
The bases are almost done, I just need to tidy the edges. They're on a temporary movement tray at the moment.

HI Max
They're all metal.
The squad troops are 2 part (Back Banners are seperate)
The Rocket Launcher Specialist is 3 part Body, Rocket, Ammo
The ninjas are a mixture. One is single piece, another two piece and third is three piece.
the lieutenant is a two pice model (body and sword arm)
The commander is three piece (I think) (body, both weapon arms)

I used a spare head from the Nurgle Plague Drones and the body of the Nurgle Chaos Lord... I've had a bit of a mishap with the matt varnish (which is why there are the odd white dots in places) but I'll fix that and then finish the base.
I'm quite proud of him really, it's taken very little time to paint him as I've done most of it with washed followed by an hour of basic highlights after they all dried.
I've used a new recipe for the rust which is nice, but I think orange and tamiya matt medium works better, I'm out of that atm so I'll get some more and finish it off..

Decisions decisions.. I'll probably stick with khorne red because I love the way they look in white dwarf, etc

This month so far I've been working on my bloodcrushers. I've taken some quick snaps to show some progress shots but I'm a bit disappointed as the red higlighting has been washed out a little...
This shot shows the water effects drying. It comes in a big tub and I smear it on and then it takes around 24 hours to cure..
The spines I was going to paint green to help tie the unit into my predominantly nurgle demon force but I don't think it's working so I suspect these will be reapinted black and then highlighted grey which is how I plan to paint the horns/claws
I wanted the hellblade to have a red/orange outline but again it feels a little messy so I shall go back and tidy it somewhat.
It's coming along well. The silvers need work, probably the colour I struggle the most with if I am being honest which is why I prefer rusted/weathered metal to trying to do pristine shiny metal.

Hi All
I've been quiet for a couple of months. Mainly due to Painting burn out, being torn between a beastman, daemons and dark angels army and the summer sun
Recently I've been working on a Land Raider. I think I'd like to do some weathering on the front to make the ramp look more weathered and some muzzle burn on the las cannons (along with fixing the horrible misaligned look to them)
This kit was really tricky to put together as no matter how much I clamped and held some parts seemed to just slip out of the correct position. More model making lessons for me I guess
Front on. Should I add some osl to the lights? I was thinking of adding a light blue overspray over the painted bits using my airbrush.
I added some icons from the ravenwing accessory sprue. It's full of useful bits for chapterising my land raider.
I've added dust and dirt using powders and fixed it in place with a matt varnish. I'm wondering whether to add more, this shot shows the misalinged las cannon barrel :/
I wanted to make the engine hatches look dirty and went with a light grey overspray followed by washes using watered down nuln oil.
I'm quite pleased with the effect.

Hi All
It's been a while since I posted anything... I've been working on all sorts of things and posting them up on facebook but not posting them here, which is perhaps, a mistake
So.. I picked up a bunch of demon stuff from a friend and I've slowly been working through it bringing some of it into my basing scheme and force and painting the stuff that was unpainted.
I've also been adding additional options that I need from other powers...
So without further ado..
This is finished now, here's a wip shot from before.. I'll get a snap of it done when the light is better. I hated this model in the magazine, said I wouldn't have one. I got one in with the bunch of stuff that my friend sold to me and having painted it.. it's one of the nicest models I;ve ever had the pleasure to work on..
I've also finished my Skullcrushers, who now look awesomesauce!
I then decided I wanted some flying disc magic shenanigans so I picked up a herald of tzeench on disc....
love this model, loads of cool spare bits left over too which is epic
Finally...
I painted these bad girls for my 2000pt whfb army... They make great chaff/blocking and having painted them I am very tempted to add some of the chariots to my collection to give me more options.
Lots more to paint and I have some time now to get it done.
