I'm kind of shocked to see this many Mech guard armies place this well. Those scenarios are probably the worst missions I've ever seen in 20 years of playing Warhammer games. They were definitely designed to screw Mech lists over (with mech guard being the most vulnerable) and clearly it didn't work very well. I would love to know how so many mech guard players won with such a massive disadvantage in that one scenario.

Reply: I gues it would be that leaf-blower is just a solid list. If you take something that is well rounded and has stuff to deal with everything then you walk into the last mission at the top of the hill anyway. The mission did hold them down but they could get around it. If they get the first turn and they have agerage or better rolls then they are still going to have a good chance of locking the game in their favor anyway.

I was supprised to see do much DE in the top of the lists. And to a lesser point I was happy to see so many mech eldar lists. A little fresh air me thinks.

I placed second at the Portal, PA with mechanized guard. I played Gobstomp420 in game 3 with mech DE (he posted our results already)

TBH I struggled with the decision of what to play, but I've been playing mech IG for the last 4 years or so, and don't have another suitable army at the points level. After himm'ing and haw'ing over needing to completely revamp the list to fit the last mission, I decided to gamble on keeping it as is. In missions 1 and 2 mechanized was an advantage I feel, and if people stay mech, then game 3 should be mech players versus each other, which leads to a fairly equal KP playing field.

Game 1 was versus loganwing (the one that took first): drew with 12 points (and lucky to get that)
Game 2 was versus Pedro marines: Massacred with 23 points
Game 3 was versus DE Raider Spam: Massacred wih 24 points

I had a great day gaming as I typically do at ard boyz, I feel at least in my area since everyone comes expecting cheese lists, theres far less whining and people just play.

Game 2 and 3 my opponents rolled fairly poorly I must admit, especcially the DE in game 3. I don't feel better rolling would have saved him though once he failed the most important roll in a matchup of paper tanks with large guns: first turn. He was a great guy and a blast to play against, so I hope to run into him again. I'm hoping for some more interesting scenario's round 2.

And no, my mechanized guard is not leafblower. Its gun heavy, but nothing like the leafblower list except that it boasts lots of chimeras and armor in general.

1.) Blood Angels (acsmedic)
2.) Tyranids (me)
3.) Tyranids (mike_houghton98)

Round 1 - Massacre Victory vs space marines, 5 objectives to 0, with all 4 battle points.
Round 2 - Minor victory vs tyranids (mike), 2 battle points --that one was tough!! our lists were nearly identical!--
Round 3 - Massacre Victory vs Blood Angels, 3 battle points

I had a great time, this is my first 'ard boyz tournament so it's really exciting that i placed in the top 3.

I have noticed that the 'Monster Farm' list for tyranids is showing up in many of the top lists, the missions were almost designed right down to the letter to favor tervigon spam w/ hive guard support. Just an idea. I have a list for the semi's that i'm playtesting that turns this one on its head, though.

One note about your third game opponent: I never saw him smile the entire time he was there (a full 12 hours). I didn't really get the warm fuzzies from that guy at all.

Hi

Another Tau winner here (me). - I thought I would leave my orks at home this year and challenge myself

Second was Wolves, third went to Blood Angels.

The turn out was small, but many of us took silly lists.

Round 1: 8 Land Raider Black Templars
Round 2: 11 Dreadnought Blood Angels
Round 3: 6 Raider & 3 Ravager Dark Eldar - Last Year's Local Winner (I was on table one in the final round, but my opponent and I bludgeoned each other into a perfect 10-10 draw, allowing this player to slip past us both) - and I had 32 kill points at the end of turn 2 (8 skimmers, 2 HQ, and 4 units) and really enjoyed crushing last year's champ.

Needless to say, my 6 railguns worked overtime!

Cheers,
Carlos the Craven

Yeah Lorek I agree and I really appreciated your help with his whacked rules interpretations. You did an excellent job as the TO. : ) My dice rolls on the AP table were horrible the last game so I have to hate on Lady Luck today. My other two opponents were pretty cool. The IG player had a very solid list.

At Sarge's Comics, in New London, Connecticut:

1st Place: Eldar (me!)
2nd Place: Chaos Marines
3rd place: Necrons

It was a pretty good turnout - 13 people, a little less than we normally get for our tournaments

My army was kind of silly, since I had to take every model I own to get to 2500 points, but I had lots of tanks, bikes, and Aspect Warriors. I never, ever, table anyone, ever, but I somehow tabled every opponent yesterday (expect in the 1st mission, when I left one drop pod alive to score max points) and ended up with 70 points. 2nd place had 47. So, yeah, I had one of 'those days.' I never have one of 'those days.' But I'm not complaining!

We had:

1 Space Marines
2 Blood Angels
1 Space Wolves
1 Black Templars
1 Chaos Marines
1 Chaos Demons
1 Necrons
2 Eldar
1 Imperial Guard
1 Tyranid
1 Sisters of Battle

The third mission was awful. Just absolutely awful. I had to table my opponent (Tyranids) if I wanted any chance at winning. My brother (with Black Templars) almost annihilated the Chaos Marine player and still got massacred on Kill Points. So, poo on the third mission, but hooray to everything else!

Not a shocker with mech lists. If the final match up had two mech lists paired against each other, it's kind of a wash regarding the KP. It can get really lopsided when there's a fully mech list vs a foot slogging list. I can foresee mech lists doing quite well in missions 1 and 2, and then face off against another mech list for mission 3.

First match for me:

Store owner filling in a spot.

Orks, I took out half his battle wagons turn 1, the other two managed to take out Yriel, 5 warlocks, 4 serpents, a vyper, and 6 walkers... talk about a bad day...

Cool guy. I squeezed out a major victory, with 2 of the battle points.

Last match:

Cool guy that sounded just like Eric from that 70's show...

I massacred him, 21 KP's to 9 KP's. All the battle points ^^

This was the best match of the night...

Second match:

...I really should have said something, this player took first.

He constantly cheated with things from reserves rolls, to hitting and wounding, he was triple my age.

My friend who was being a pest while spectating, also saw this.

I called him on many things, though I gave up, I might have been able to place in the top 5th if he had cheated less, maybe even 3rd if he hadn't cheated at all.

First comment he gave to me:

"Those bases are illegal" because I happened to be using small bases for my vypers...

No one else had a problem with it...

Turn 3, a mycetic spore comes in, it was a styrofoam egg painted purple and brown... he was also using a carnifex as a tervigon.

Game two ruined my 'Ard Boyz experience, game three redeemed the 3 hour trip.

I was also late when my friend woke up 11:45, when we planned to leave at 11. They waited for us though.

Heh, that's exactly what happened with me. Round three was hot and heavy Mech on Mech action.

I had a really tough game against Daemons in round one. Deep Striking everything is a handy advantage in a 5 objective mission! Oh, and I really hate the Fateweaver... I won though.

18 people showed up at Agents of Comics in Wichita, Kansas (regional store, we get players from Oklahoma as well):

1st place: Me, Loganwing (58 pts)
2nd place: imweasel, mixed mech Space Wolves (57 pts)
3rd place: BA Maximum Overdrive variant (55? pts)

No Dawn of War for the entire tournament and the S3 mission really made me re-think bringing my guard. I didn't see any real reason not to use a non-mech gunline, so the 'meta' altered my thinking there. I would have brought mech guard otherwise.

Unfortunately neither I nor imweasel will be able to make the R2 semifinals due to scheduling conflicts, so we had to pass our tickets to 4th and 7th place, playing Vulkan and Mech Marines respectively.

I had a great time playing at The Bookery in Fairborn, Ohio. Thanks To Charles Kidd, KevinKirby, and Starbomber109 for some wicked fun games.

The Standings were:

1. Keeblerpowell with Nids
2. KevinKirby with Deffwagon Orks
3. Me with Mech Eldar
4. Bachus248 with Shrike Terminators
5. Starbomber109 with Deffwagon Orks
6. Charles Kidd with Deathwing + Ravenwing sprinkled in.

I Massacred Charles Kidd in the first round by putting all my transports in the way of his advancing 40 Terminators and strung 2 squads of Dire Avengers across 4 Objectives.

I got Massacred in Round 2 by KevinKirby. From the get go I was losing 1-2 grav tanks to his two full Loota squads. He had them placed behind his army so I couldn't get to them in time to stem the damage he was doing per turn. Also didn't help that out of 2 Bright lance Wave Serpents and 3 Fire Prisms I could not get a damage result more than Crew Shaken over 5 turns until turn 6 when my last Bright lance popped one of his Deffwagons. Still a fun game.

I Massacred Starbomber109 in Round 3 he ran a list very similar to KevinKirby’s so the mistakes and trials I just went through were fresh in my head. I was able to take his lootas out by turn 2 and was able to pop his deffwagons by turn 4.

All in all I had a great time.

Monster Rain referred to our results - I was the horde ork player who took first in Londonderry NH (semi horde actually, I only have 115 footsloggers - the rest of my points are in kanz, lootaz, nobz and wagons). 3 good games and 3 good opponents.

Regarding mech and their apparent success, I think the victory point preservation side of mech and the inherent advantage that gave them the edge in scenario two. Basically, I think Mech armies did so well in round 2 that they were likely playing each other in round 3.

Not that it happened that way with me, but only by the grace of Gork. Round 2 I was up against a battle tank formation of IG. Spearhead victory points is probably the worst thing that can happen to my orks. I got lucky with a few leadership tests and was able to charge his tanks turn 3 with much-reduced mobz and shut down his shooting.

The dreaded over-powered deffrollaz accounted for GASP - a single lascannon from a vendetta in my first two games. It was at its best in round three against some other orks - I blew up a battle wagon and 3 kanz with them.

I think this was the conclusion drawn by many people before 'Ard Boyz. If S3 had been S1, there may have been a much greater impact. As it was, mech lists rolled over S1 and S2, and went on to play other mech lists S3.

I came in 6th out of 22 players with my mech guard. First mission minor victory, second mission massacre, and last mission minor loss. The last mission I killed 1600 points of his army and he killed 1050 of mine, but because of the kill point scenerio(51 kp) he beat me by 1 kill point. It was my friend that beat me and he placed 1st so its still a win to me.

1. Orks walking 2 squads of nobs in trukk and wagon, snikrot and 3 koptas
2. AV heavy deep strike Nids
3. Really weirdly mixed tank heavy guard

I finished 5th with mech guard. Our store was pretty well run by 2 of the local regulars. There were some wrong rule calls by the refs but what can you do.
Game 1: I played a mixed MC and stealers nids. Played pretty poorly and faught my way back to what I though was a Tie until his "count as tervigon" carnifex just happened to be right at 3 inches from an extra objective. minor loss. +2 bp
Game 2: I played a fast attack Space Wolves army. Tabled him minus 1 rhino massacre +4 bps. Ended up in First place at the end of 2 rounds
Game 3: Played the Orks who won first. Setup horribly. Did exactly what I said I wouldn't and instead of focusing on the nobs round 1 mainly shot the mobs. Didn't end well. He was rolling all 5-6 on saves the whole game. massacre loss +1 bp.
Expecting to see more "walking" armies I took Colossus and lost some of my long range AV punch. Hurt me in the end. One thing that bothered me at the end of the day was how the seeding is done in round 3. I can understand round 1 random, 2 you play someone who did well as you in round 1. But penalizing players for doing well at the end of 2 by playing other top ranked people means likely 1/2 of the top people in the first 2 rounds won't make top 3, is that always how ard boys seeds? Also bothered me that several people who didn't do well in the first 2 rounds bailed for round 3 or threw the games and thats how the 3rd place guard got in. A SW player gave him the game and every BP. I think that is just as poor sportsmanship as cheating.

I was in second place over-all with a dual landraider chaos list. The list in itself was unusual from normal chaos lists but it worked well as at the end of round 2 i was in second place.

Then i played the first place guy who was running a 9 broadside tau list. The board i played on had all area cover and nothing that i could hide behind that would block line of sight. All of my transports were killed turn 1. It was by far the most ridiculously one sided game i have ever played. I ended up taking 5th overall as i was completely destroyed.

If i had played on any of the other boards at the tournament i would have actually had a good match, but instead i instant lost. The tournament overall was fun, but the end game being so ridiculously one sided with no chance for me to even attempt to win left a very bitter taste in my mouth.

Nids have a pretty big advantage in VP missions as well. Nids can get half points from every squad they reduce below 50% or immobilize a vehicle, but only give up points if a MC dies. S2 and S3 were both very friendly for good Nid players.

So at my local store I took 1st with Eldar. It turned out like this:

1st: Eldar (me)

3rd: Farsight Tau

I took a horrible list but played well so did okay. I only started playing again after 8 months about 10 days ago so I made some serious mistakes or would have done much better. I only had 51 battle points, luckily the fact that players were very well matched prevented anyone from really coming out on top, most rounds were minor victories. I had help that someone with two major victories was massacred in the last round and went to 4th. I also massacred in round 3 which pushed me to the top.
