We have already had actors AND doers in office... why not reality TV stars! (it's like acting like a doer!)

I don't consider speaking ability nearly as much as it has been (especially in the post Dubyah era) to be as big a deal as people make it out to be. After Bush, it's the easiest buzz for mudslinging. Voters are fickle and that's the big no-no in the current climate because the last idiot that was elected made a predictable idiot style mess of the power he had, and is easily memorable as an idiot who sounded dumb in the way he spoke, not for what he actually did/didn't do, but for how he made an oaf of himself when speaking. So yay... that's the new measuring stick fad for what makes a good world leader, well for this round of fickleness anyways.

That doesn't change the fact that she IS just a little bit noticeably ignorant about anything with substance she is speaking about and so are many of her 'fans' who seem to think that's a good thing, making her 'accessable or 'likeable' because she is just as ignorant and common as the 'average american hockey-mom' character she plays herself as.

I don't want a President who only as smart as I am, because I feel I can relate to said person. (actually I do, but I'm an elitist) I want one who is smarter, wiser, and BETTER than me, not some everyman I feel I can relate to.

I really don't care how eloquent a President's speech is, so much as the content. Ay umm and err and mispronounce all you want so long as what you are talking about is something relevant, well thought out, and with some sense of knowledgable information either of your own or of your advisors. When I think of Obama I think of smooth yet somewhat irrelevant 'hope' style speeches about topics concerning nothing relevant, and dead serious and decisive speeches about serious issues, and maybe (as if it matters) with a slipup here or there.

It is up to the individual what is serious or important, but it is also up to the individual to determine who is stupid enough to worry about comparing dancing with the stars as a 'wholesome' show unlike American Idol and even consider being a force in world political affairs. What does she want? To get the votes from 'dancing with the stars' fans at the expense of 'american idol' fans? Yeah that's some shrewd shrewd politics Sarah.

I don't care if Obama seems 'slick' because of a good speech writing team, and Palin seems like a buffoon. What I care about is that Palin is about as dumb as a box of rocks and it should be obvious no matter how well she speaks and comes over pretty obviously no matter what she is speaking about. What I care about even more is she thinks she speaks for the 'average' American (and sadly, she just might be right, dear lord I hope not).

I get absolutely no sense of deep thinking, critical thinking, analysis and well planned ideas at all from listening o her, what I get is a sense of a stupid 'every-woman' who feels empowered and energetic and completely free to make a complete ass of herself because she knows that her base can relate to her and forgive her her complete ignorance and moronic stance on serious world affairs because they are just as uninformed as Dancing With The Stars opinions and whatnot makes them. Maybe she should get Gene Simmons as a running mate, or Sharon Osbourne! I hear their reality shows do well too!

Final thought in my ramble: if you think Sarah Palin stands a chance in hell of being elected President, just think of how she would come accross to other international leaders. Do you think anybody would take her cute little mannerisms and spunky little soundbytes at all seriously? American voting public has a sometimes well deserved reputation of being ignorant, fickle, and, well dumb - but are we really THAT dumb?

Sorry, I just thought that the whole thing smacked of personal vendetta more than a political disagreement. But you are the Sheriff around these parts. Anyways... OT:

I'd be really surprised if she ended up being a serious contender for the Presidency. Ever. Giving up her job as the Governor was a mistake in my opinion, and something that any opponent is going to beat her over the head with during the Republican Primaries. I'm pretty well "right of center" but I honestly can't think of any leading republicans that I want to vote for for president. They all seem like a bunch of pandering carnies, if I'm honest.

No, of course not. The rest of us just worry that enough of you might be, for her to get a result. I've noticed a worrying trend towards Neo-cons just doing whatever annoys 'liberals' - good sense and decency be damned. That sort of mentality, combined with a significant swing towards the Republican party, and fairly wide-ranging dissatisfaction with Obama, could unfortunately see Palin in the White House, if you chaps aren't careful.

And make no mistake about it, she is a stupid, stupid woman. She wouldn't even get a council seat here. That 'folksy' thing doesn't cover up a politician's shortcomings as much in the UK, thankfully. I think you were spot-on with what you were saying about wanting a President who, if anything, was SMARTER than you, not equal. Good post in general that, actually. Nice work!

The only real equivalent we have here is the 'class thing' - certain sections of the UK's voting public don't trust Cameron because he went to Eton and Oxford. Please no! We couldn't possibly have one of the world's largest economies being run by a well-educated person! The very thought!

Hey albatross. We fear the same thing here about the rest of 'us' as you chaps over there do. There isn't really one American voice and unfortunately the loudest ones often belong to the biggest dumbest mob. I agree that she is stupid stupid lady and wouldn't possibly be taken seriously in British politics, but (at least so much as I have led to believe) you Brits are at least educated enough to know where Washington D.C. is as a pretty standard piece of common knowledge.

The big problem is that politics here are easily distracted by the unimportant. Our sense of freedom goes so far as to include ignorance, irrational belief, and stupidity as some kind of legally protected right of Americans. All rationality goes out the window when it comes remotely close to anybody's 'beliefs'. It goes hand-in-hand with "In God We Trust". I won't start this as a religion-versus-state specific target, but it is very easy to distract a large number of people who are bent out of shape about what most people consider an unimportant issue (like gay marriage, Obama's Islamic potential, weapons, stem cells, all typically Republican/religious-right concerns that are simply uninteresting or only interesting in that it heightens our level of worry about who it is who actually has the voting power.)

God's will and reality TV's will influences me to think blah blah and I have a right to vote (and, unfortunately for the rest of you, breath). As an extremely black-and-white way of looking at it, a politician here has the decision to either embrace the mob and pander to their ignorant priorities, or to embrace the intellectual and pander to their rationality, while looking just "not-quite-as-dumb" to try and sway the rational to a lesser of two evils choice. Nice juggling act I suppose to try to rationally appeal to an irrational mob, or dogmatically appeal to a rational one. I wonder every election which one I think is outnumbered here, and what the circus must look like to outsiders.

Is it a personal attack? I mean, many of your posts on this site are completely ridiculous, and there’s few posters who’d argue otherwise. If most of the posts made are ridiculous, how else might we honestly describe a person?

Is it a personal attack for you to claim you’re above me?

As Frazz would say, talk gak about your own people running YOUR country.

Start a thread on it and I’ll be happy to talk about the poor handling of the NBN or some other matter. To the extent that you can make sensible comments on the issue, I'd like to hear them.

Speaking of which, so nice of Australia to say we can have a man who SHOULD die by injection on the merits we only lock him away for a little bit.

As a country opposed to the death penalty, we won’t release a man to die in another country. I understand that you really and some of your compatriots really want to kill people, and so I’m sorry we can’t help you in that, but we simply can’t.

!) Ridiculous to you maybe but then again the apparent side of the podium makes your ideas ridiculous to me, which obviously is my opinion. As to others, most of the ones who think I speak out my ass are people with personal vendettas. FFS, even HBMC can refrain from attacking me on occasion.

2) Again, why do foreigners feel the need to bash on our leaders or potential future leaders? I doubt very few Americans (even my redneck uneducated friends, don't rant and rave about the Queen or the PM of GB or the leaders of other countries.

3) Yes, I do like to kill people. Hell, I do it on a daily basis. I'm just so damn good at it I haven't been caught yet. I think my body count is up over 1,000. I guess the DP is one thing we'll have to agree to disagree on. Eh?

4) Utterly ridiculous is your opinion. In my opinion any comment advocating looser immigration laws, gay rights, trying international terrorists in civilian court are all utterly ridiculous no matter HOW those particular comments are worded due to the NOTION of those topics being utterly ridiculous in my opinion.

But I'm not going to enter into a pissing contest with anyone. Shuma, as to my post count being so high because I like to post "Obamanation or "One big ass mistake, America" comments, shows you apparently can't read. My post count in NON-OT threads is nearly as high as my post count in OT threads (and for the pedantic who will pick apart this comment just to prove me wrong I did say NEARLY as high).

To be fair, you have a long history of arguing from factually incorrect premises; even going so far as to acknowledge that you willfully ignore fact in favor of feeling.

Well, off the top of my head:

1) America is a powerful nation and, as a result, our elections tend to have significant impacts beyond our borders.

2) Many people simply find politics to be interesting, and American has both a very interesting political climate and is heavily covered by the media abroad.

Additionally, I know many Americans that enjoy poking fun at foreign politicians. Including some Texans on this board who have made the same argument that you're making now. Iranian politics is a popular target for derision, as are Israeli politics, British politics, French politics, and Russian politics. North Korea certainly fits in there as well.

Also, I feel it's unfair to treat sebster's explanation of Fateweaver's posting as an attack on his character. Fateweaver's characterization of me as the "king of trolls" is an attack on my character since it attributes to me an active malice, whereas sebster is correcting me for attributing to malice what is clearly Fateweaver's own inability, and therefore no fault of Fateweaver.

Americans aren't 'dumb'. Italians aren't dumb, despite putting Berlusconi is office on three seperate occassions. The Russians weren't stupid, despite how strongly they supported Putin.

Smart people can believe incredibly stupid political things, because politics is a fairly distanced thing, and quite outside of most people's regular experiences. The result, as you pointed out in your other post, is that politics is frequently distracted by, and decided by, unimportant issues. Hey, one of the major issues in the election down here was people arriving by boats to claim refugee status, to the point where one of the two candidates was actually talking about having a direct line set up in his his office whenever a new boatload of refugees arrives so he can deal with the matter personally. This is ridiculous because we receive, at most, 2,000 people by boat every year, it was a completely trivial issue over which to focus so much of the election.

Decent political debate really depends on the politicians themselves and the news media to have personal, professional pride to keep to issues of importance. That is increasingly looking like a lot to ask for though...

As to others, most of the ones who think I speak out my ass are people with personal vendettas. FFS, even HBMC can refrain from attacking me on occasion.

And by the way, I have no personal vendetta against you. I hold no ill will towards you at all. I think your posts get too personal at times, but that's something plenty of posters are guilty of, and I know you've been penalised for that when you've gone to far.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
