both are correct,

Grey is the accepted spelling here in the US, but Gray is also acceptable.

I don't think I have seen it spelled "grey" by anyone who isn't american. Now excuse me while I go put on my Armour, and visit my community centre to honour my comrades.

GW uses the e spelling. They're British.

And? That has no bearing on what you said. As well, BFG is in Metric.

You just did .

Just to elaborate on my point; a lot of American's (and literature by said American's) spell it with an 'a'. It is annoying.

Hell, the only reason so many words in American-English differ from the original language is that America wanted to differentiate itself in every-single-damned-way-possible when it gained independence. Or something along those lines..

Oh... point. I believe the spelling of grey as "gray" is not a staple of american society (tho it does crop up a bit). ANd lots of our language comes from a different time period, some rednecks, and some druggies. Incidentilly, we still use Teddy Roosevelt's spelling of through, thru.

Goddamned Roosevelt. 'Thru' annoys me, especially because it's invading our country via our crappy restaurant chains.

Hmm... I have to say, I do like Great Britain form my few visits there, but some things should stay american. Like 'color' 'honor' and 'center'. I just like those spellings better.

And sir, I do belive we've hijacked this thread.

*shrug*. Tends to happen with me.

As for colour, honour and centre - we invented those words; so you can put your false spellings where the sun doesn't shine . Then you can prepare for the literary crusade that I predict will happen, and you shall be impaled upon sharpened pencils of the finest British Oak and beaten to death with our largest books that serve no purpose other than impromptu weaponry.

Now, TBH, American grammar disguists even me. As someone who once lived (yes, I did) in England (near wales) and in Croatia (where they use British spellings), I am known to occasionally use the british spellings, but for the most part I use the good young American. My conclusion as to why the spellings are different is much more complex than yours:

Americans use unorthodox spellings of certain words because:

In the busy American world of TV programs (I believe there is an alt. spelling fro this too?) where bin Laden was only killed when the PSN was down, there is no time for extra vowels and such! Besides, our attention span is was too sh- ooh, hey, House is on!

Now the British, what with their miserable (mostly) rainy weather, have time to add these letters, and be productive on a regular basis. How else did we get the internet and the computer? Britain of course! (MY explanation to the internet: An English weapon of mass distraction to counter American Productivity).

And THAT, good sirs, is the reason why im2 and Dark should, in America,

"Don their armor and challenge me to an honor duel, and shall color the soil red with my blood. Center your thoughts, because you are about to run me thru! (fixed it for ya!).

Whew, what a mouthful.

Shotguns aren't manly enough; chainsaws! Americans seem to think Canadians are all lumberjacks anyways so at least they'll know we aren't british when we yell about the whole grammar thing.

P.S., yes, about, not aBOOT

P.P.S. Darkvoid, we need to unite everyone who actually knows how to spell!

Thought I was complimenting the British...

Asgeirr: "Wait... No... no... stay away from me... NOOOOOOO "

Darkvoid: "Our work here is done." *Turns away*

Im2: "Yays! Ooops... Dark, what a lovely red colour you've left on my shirt... Dark? DARK?"

*Dark Rises up as a Zombie*

Im2: "Wait... you're a zombie now, and you were a grammar nazi before, so... are you a grammar nazi zombie?"

Asgierr: *opens eyes* "Is that really worse than a regular zombie?"

Dark: "Braaaaaaiiiins...."

Im2: "I dunno... but is he a grammar nazi turned zombie, or a zombie turned grammar nazi?"

Asgeirr: "Only one way to find out. YO FOO! Come ovah heyah so's I can avenge mah HONOR! You ain't being acorrecting me no more!"

Dark: "Eat...American..."

Asgeirr: "Definitely the second. Oh shi-" *eaten by Dark*

Dark: "I've wanted to do that for a long time..."

To understand part of this, you need to watch this College Humor (or College Humour)...:

Not quite the same, but close enuff (and yes, I do know it's spelled enough).
