Wow, I got seriously dinged on paint score. I wish I could have seen my painting sheet - I would love to know how I scored so low relative to others around me. Maybe the paint judges didn't look at my army or they did it in the dark

I'll give you a rematch any time, Rich!

I'm guessing it was the speed at which he had to paint score adding some extra variance, as I felt mine was probably artificially high (since I was within 1-2 points of Jawaballs). I paint pretty well, but it's not complete/detailed to the extent Jawa's is.

Hopefully next year Conflict will expand (meaning Aaron will take on more helping hands during the event so he isn't doing it all himself)

Having all the paint judging happen during gaming, all done by one person, rushing thru every army in every game....probably not going to get the best scoring that way. I formally volunteer to help Aaron run things next year!

For conversions I got "2 - Minor Conversions: Kit bashing on multiple units or squads"

Only 17 of the 44 models in my army WEREN'T converted. 17 models (two of which were vehicles and one of which was MC-sized) were near scratchbuilds, and also included sculpted, magnetized, or rotating parts . I don't think he even noticed that my Immortals were conversions, as I was playing a game at the time and I didn't see him look at them. I think I liked it better how at the NoVa they had a seperate paint judging table and you could point stuff out to the judges. I also got no points for my freehand lightning. Oh well, I'll be sure to point out everything in my army next year!

Couple comments:

1) Paint judging was definitely rushed at conflict this year, and he'll have to get help in future years, but after talking with him, I think he's open to that which is good
2) Whenever you have conversions make sure you point them out (just general GT advice, not making excuses for what happened to you), some of the hardest conversions look great, but aren't noticeable unless you look closely and know the army well, judges miss that stuff a lot. I've definitely fallen prey to this in the past and make sure to point things out now. For instance I sculpt my own bases and cast them. Most judges see them and think "oh he bought resin bases" unless I tell them I actually made them and show the master copies.
2) The nova isn't a great comparison in this case, since you were among the invitational players. Invitational players got judged early so they could have the score used in the invitational, and then that score was used for their main GT event as well. In the main GT, players were judged between rounds, but probably not in quite as much detail as the invitational players were just due to the time constraints (plenty of time to do 32 players on that first day, doing the other 200+ over the next 2 was a push)

But keep your head up! Your wraith conversions were simple yet very very sick, and inspired a few of my friends who came with on how they planned on making their wraiths

Thank you! Actually at NOVA, I had to be judged twice as I didn't have all the models I needed for 2k with me at the invitational. I'll keep in mind the bases thing, as I'm currently sculpting the bases for my new NOVA army and they could be mistaken for resin.

I thought you had a lot of creative conversions in there.

I will say that the Wraiths did seem perhaps a bit small, and the tails were not (for my taste) as distinguishable as I would choose to model them in order to easily differentiate the wargear. If I held the two models up, after you explained it, I could spot the difference. If you had not explained it they would have been functionally indistinguishable, and when they were engaged in a melee and surrounded by other models, it got hard to pick out.

I've been considering options for converted Wraiths myself, as I'd like to feature them in my own upcoming Necron army, so I've been thinking about them a bit.

I had originally intended to have the wraiths without whip coils have necron torsos to be kind of like "handlers", and then the more serpentine ones would be the whip coils, but because of time constraints coupled with the fact that I realized too late I didn't have enough torsos, I wasn't able to do it. For my NOVA army I'm going to spend lots of time on it and maybe even try to go for best painted if I paint everything to the quality of my Golden Demon entry a few years ago! But that's a pretty big maybe However, I'm sure that I'll get more favorite opponent votes as my opponents fight against WWP-less Foot Dark Eldar

Also, Andrew, I honestly don't think your paint score was overjudged at all. I haven't looked at your army in detail, but on first glance it looks amazing.
