Big Names sadly arn't worth it any more.

Mawseeker got massivly overly compensated for its cheapness in the last book and became Tyrant only.

Only name remotly worth it is Giant Breaker and then its debatable.

Very expendable but the trappers in a horde I ran killed about 5 flagellants before they reached the unit. Great 25pt upgrade just keep them within 12" of your general.

Gnoblars are nice, especially with the 25 pts upgrade. You stick them in front of your lead belchers.
The gnoblars have slings, and the upgrade isnt effected by your formation. So if you stretch them out across
to intercept all charges, even with 1 rank deep thats fine too.Its not like the 4 ranks will add anything to a win.

So let them do what they do best, annoy the chargers and make them think twice about charging,
or charge and take the dangerous terrain test.

Ok sounds good.
Are they any good at redirecting?
I mean my chaos hounds do a good job of that would gnoblars be worth it?

Also do ogres still take panic if the gnoblars all die since i know brets get to do something weird like that with peasants.

a) They can be used for it, but i don't think its that effective. And if you want them for redirecting purpose, remember don't upgrade them with traps.

b) Yes they have a special rule allowing no other units ( including other Gnoblars ) to panic, when one Gnoblar unit breaks.

Gnoblars can redirect, but I think they are best used as a mobile Minefield.

Place them in front of your ogres which forces your enemy to charge them first before they get to the ogres behind. This works really well against chariot heavy armies or massive hordes(as they can do some serious damage to them)

Ok good not that some big oll IG unit decides to peace out when some gnoblars die haha.

How come you wouldnt equip them with traps and still redirect?
Wouldnt the unit take dt and then be sitting in a nice spot to get flanked by some big ogre unit?

If im not mistaken, the trap activates in close combat.
Redirect means you flee in another direction ( im probably wrong on this, but when you flee you either ran away successfully without a fight or get caught and auto ran down )

Would the Belchers suffer a cover penalty for hooting over gnoblars?

The traps work when the unit's charged by an enemy. I can't remember if it matters if the charge is successful...

Thats an important factor to consider i think, or we can start taking MSU of trappers :3

*edit. It says: "Take a dangerous terrain test as soon as the charge is completed."

Does that mean successful charge? or just charge is done? I dont know :<

What banner to give to your iron guts depends their size.
A gave them the frostwyrm banner because i have a large horde unit. And 18 ironguts are nice with reroll to hit and wound.

What I've found works surprisingly well is a hunter, iron fist, dragon helm, stubborn crown, mounted on stone horn.
3+ armor and parry (iron fist), and making the stone horn stubborn 9 is pretty solid.
It's a ton of points (429), so it's the type of thing you have to build a list around.

The rules for shooting say that all shooting hits hit the stone horn on 1-4 and the hunter on 5+. This is different then the normal monstrous mount rules where cannons would hit both models.
With the stone horn taking half damage, and the hunter fairly durable, this guy can sprint up the flank unsupported and raise hell.
It's the only way I've found to make a hunter remotely useful.

I believe the rule is any interposing unit causes hard cover, regardless of TLOS.

Ogres lack a great redirecting unit, unless you want to dedicate sabres to do it. If you can get your gnobs close enough to the action -they're probably the best redirecting unit in the game. Redirectors, imo, are expendable anyway and won't cause a lot of damage - so why not a redirector that kills 1 in 6 models that charges it? haha.

Now, there's a whole "works exactly like a shield" argument going on with the whole ironfist debate. While this, to me, is evidence enough - p. 32 under IRONFISTS, first paragraph, they call it a gauntlet. Gauntlets are armor. Also "...benefits from all the rules of shields..." and as far as I know, if a model can take a shield they can take magic armor. (there's no debate about this in my gaming circle, but to answer the debate here on Dakka, the "works exactly like" "is a gauntlet" and "benefits from all the rules" appear to be the big three that ogre-fearing players just want to treat like they don't exist)

Glad you're rocking the Ogres! Where were you 3 years ago?! haha.

Please don't hijack the thread into the same exact thread that has many many more posts devoted entirely to that one subject alone. All of this has already been broached. If you want to resurrect the other thread then do so.

Sabertusks are actually damn solid in terms of stats. They just have horrible LD. And they are Specials, of which Ogres already have basically their entire awesome choices. So it's tough to justify.

Gnoblar Trappers are basically the cost of 10 Gnoblars. While the trap is certainly cool, if you just want them as a tarpit or cover, I think the cost is a bit prohibitive. Also, you "just" take 1W with no armor saves if you fail dangerous terrain. Not exactly the same as killing 1/6 models.

Made in us

Ah yeah. To correct - it's just a Dangerous Terrain test for all models charging, not killing 1/6 of them.

Ironfists are armor. Gimme the keys! This is a threadjack! lol

Oh jeez what have I started.

Haha.

Looks pretty clear to me From what grey posted but what eves.

Ok so for the purpose of THIS thread they will be armor and will from this point be treated as such to settle that argument for here there will be no more talk on this thread of it being not armor.

Ok so I was thinking for kicks 2 or 3 4 man Leadies for kicks they are ogres and have cannons sounds legit to me.

3 years ago I was playing necrons like a boss

Now just in case anyone is wondering I am not trying to be a band wagon jumper.
I have looked through that woc book so many times and it looks like it has gotten quite a bit of mileage.

I was really wanting to play an army with more shooting and such and I though dwarfs and make em chaos because I play bad guys and thats how I roll.
So that was the plan but then I played a game with ogres and well basically I thought it was totally awesome and thought it would be sweet making them chaos.
Those mournfangs look super cool and bulls coming in six packs just like beer is appealing to me
The extra rolling dice for impact hits the d6 shots per leadie so much dice rolling i thought it was awesome. ( I like rolling dice).

I dont know how I feel about the big monsters I know I want one at some point but at first I want a couple units of bulls as I said above 2 or 3 leadie units some iron guts mournfangs and the cannon thing.
If that makes any tactical sense at all. (plus characters butcher etc).

I am working on a list so I will post that as soon as I am happy with it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yes we will wait till the FAQ and till then for purposes of simplicity they will be armor in this thread.

Here is what I have been working on for a list.

9 Ogres 323

9 Ogres 323

9 Ironguts 422

4 Mournfang 350
Heavy armor, iron fist.

4 Leadbelchers 182

Ironblaster 170

Comes to just under 2k So now is where it gets tricky.

I want to include a fire belly, a sm and a bruiser bsb.

Any thoughts so far and ya for magic banner ideas would be good too.

Thanks guys.

Do I give them any upgrades as in a champ? And iron gist yes or no?
For the sm does he really need uber protection with the armor ? He is t5 with like 5 wounds so I mean like what's going to kill him ok other than a cannon.

Also stonehorne a yes or a no?

The fire bellies are pretty sweet definitely getting 1.

For Mournfangs, ALWAYS give them Ironfists, and ALWAYS give them Heavy Armor. 2+ armor and a 6+ parry(in close combat)

2+ armor combined with the Dragonhide Banner is why Mournfangs demolish infantry. Just avoid Str5 and Armor Piercing. once you have worse then a 3+ save it becomes very bad for the kitties.

I thought mounted models could not parry...
