The spells function quite differently but I see pit more valuable since it is often better at removing big nasty single models and grants you miasma.
As for my favorite lores; I tend to play lvl2 seer shadow and lvl4 high almost exclusively after I tried that combo out.

Purple Sun has just too many variables in it's casting for it to reliably work.
1) Very high casting value.
2) Artillery DiceX3 for distance. Really only reliable at short range, which puts you in danger of the spell's effects too.
3) Misfire on the artillery dice results in it being around you. again, not good, even for high I armies.
4) its only a small or large blast. This limits its potential damage wheras Pit of Shades effects an entire unit.

Oooops, so it is.
Dang, must have been confused with dwellers.
Either way, Pit is a little better because it can't misfire on top of you. it just scatters.

Hmm I can definitely see the bonus of having a mob of S7 swordsman charge my friends Skaven. He would make the same derp face as he does when I deploy a Trueborn unit

Isn't it 15+ for the small Purple Sun template?
Purple Sun hits everything in the path, making the area hit much, much larger.
Purple Sun makes power dice. Making power dice is awesome.

Well, yeah. that stilll requires it to be really close to work properly.
and the powerdice gig is a pretty lame attribute, except against ogres where its basically 1 power dice per failed I test(and possably more)

Also if its a misfire and the templates on you it still scatters, probably off of you

Seriously?
I've never failed to get less than 10 dice back when I cast a purple sun, and that's against Init 3 empire.
As for range, Art die x3, +3" (the temple starts with the leading edge 3" from you, back edge touching you), even with "poor rolls", like a "4", you're shooting that bad boy out 15" from your base.
You can't just go all willy nilly with purple sun though, you have to plan for it, and have either a highly mobile caster, or dirt cheap troops of your own to fling it through.
