Back to the OP, I can't really rag on any army. My gaming philosphy is that everyone is beatable, and next time I can make it work.
If Marines became "the worst codex" I would still play them.

Well... the other day I was insulted (they even decided to throw in some insults at my buddies with me) for playing Space Wolves. *shrugs* I understand if you don't like something, but there is no reason to start yelling at someone for liking an army you don't like. I've had people refuse to play my Imperial Guard before as well.

Ok First things first...The game is balanced... Period.
There is a rule book for a reason... It clearly says before game each player makes up a list to match points agreed upon before hand, then suggest to be "curteous" and show them your list/codex after the game... ( If you want to Take a gander at my Codex, go pay the 30$ i did for it and go nutz )
I used to see these kinds of people alot back in the day when i played Magic the gathering, they whine and snivel because of whatever you have because you made a better Deck or in this case List then them....
Also its not like IG is rare to see... and so what if there are multi-purpose and have some rules that people dislike, but i could say that about any army...
Look at the Lance weapons for example that eldar get... But you will never hear me whine and snivel because GW made a balanced game and i just happen to be losing today...
I do agree defusing is proboly a better option then fighting with the guy over something so childish but at the same time i feel like these people get to much "pity" or are treated with care because they act like children.. Obv some people are not ment for any kind of competative game and shouldnt play those games and go play xbox instead and trash talk people across the world...
If i play IG and i win a tournament, now im a Arse because i made a list that stomped everybody? No i did what everyone is trying to do, make a list and play an army to win while playing by the rules. So just because i beat everyone that day or what not does not mean im invincible thats just a childish excuse to losing because everyone in this game has a fair chance to win. Lets also look at who won some of the top tournaments and how many were IG?
These people Lose and act like children and then people baby them so the lil baby dun get upset . I feel they should NOT be treated like children anymore and should be told whats up, and "man up" or whatnot because these are the same people that win and rub it in your face and go facebook it all day, but when they lose its because the other guy is cheating in some form or another....
Anyways what im getting at is adults get treated like adults unless i can see ur diaper then maybe i will treat you like a child, this is the real world and as many people have already said we are grown men/women playing a friendly board game.
If someone gives you a hard time about your army choice and refuses to play you call him "Soft" and go ask the next guy because im sure anyone else with any kind of sportsmanship would love to play you.
and the more people ignore the child and continue to play and see people accept your challenge will hopefully make him realize how much of a tool he is being and maybe even ask you to play.
Just my 2 cents

Smile, nod, wait for the ranting to subside, and offer to pull out a different army. Unless you're in a tournament where you aren't allowed to switch lists in the middle, then call over an organizer and ask for a different opponent. Or give the guy a '0' for sportsmanship and whip his ass anyway.

I'm starting to think it's just the guy's attitude. Saw him again in my FLGS this week and he was talking to some guys, and was talking about armies he refused to play in fantasy and other systems, before it looped back to 40k and IG again. i just ignored him and talked to another guy there I knew.
I've just accepted thats how the guy is. I don't think its IG so much as he just has that attitude toward all games. I'm not going to rag on him. but I probably wont play against him anytime soon either (with my IG or my orks) If I run into him at a tournament, I'm either getting a free win or another opponent, so no biggie there either. I've got tons of other players at my store to go up against, so i'm not really missing out on anything.
As long as he doesn't openly criticize me when I pull out my army case. or instigate something out of the blue, I'm just going to live and let live. If he walks up and just lays into my army during a game or something, then my attitude may change, but for now, he's not hurting anything. He obviously doesnt want to play my army, and nothing is forcing him to, so all the power to him. Thats one person out of 50 in my local area, I think I'll live

well I re-started my BA army again with the new codex (It's mainly a fun list and will do horribly if objective taking is involved)
2nd test game 1250pts. Organised a game before hand and as I was setting up against my opponents orks he saw my "cheese" Angels and said if he had known i was bringing them he would of used his Tau. In the end i won which increased his whining about broken Blood Talons, and arranged a game for the next week and at a higher points value.
So he shows up and starts the trash talking about how his pulse rifles will rip apart my puny marines. In the end my dreads ripped apart his front-line and he quits turn 2.
All this from somebody older than me and who has been playing longer than me

I would have probably argued with him a bit. Respectfully if I could help it. I think everyone deals with some hate for their army. But the 40k universe is big and i'm sure everyone shares something in common. I know I hear a lot of hate being a Tau player and i'm not going to pretend like I never get angry when someone starts trash talking the army I play, but that's just part of the game. I think the best thing to do is try to have a civilized argument about it. It is a game after all.

I've heard lots of Eldar hate. It's never been directed at me, but it seems like there are lots of people out there who find them extremely OP. The fact that it takes lots of time and tons of losses in order to get to the skill level where you can make them seem like they're OP seems to be lost on most of these people...

Second for that. Whenever a new guy shows up at the FLGS, and ends up playing our resident Eldar King, Jerry tends to whip them, though he's very polite about it, and helpful when it comes to newbies in general. It does, however, lead to the occasional rant that makes the rest of us roll our eyes.

i play apocalypse pretty often, once a month nearly, sometimes twice a month, and thus my dark eldar have slowley expanded to have numerous apocalypse formations, including a ravager titan hunters, a pair of revenants, numerous fliers, and most recently a phantom titan and tarantulus.
the first time i fielded my phantom, one of the guys opposite mean IG player i had never met before took one look at the phantom, and said "screw this im not playing against that overpowered *bleeping* broken *bleep* piece of *bleep* army" packed up his 2 baneblades and left the game. (he hung around the event - a multi game inc boardgames and such day) mooching drinks off people and doing nothing but whining and complaining about "how can a guy bring a phantom titan to a friendly apoc game and so on and on and on.... even going as far as to call me a "looser who cant play the game and has too much money on his hands who has to buy expensive FW stuff to beat people" - i offered to play him 1850 lists, and he refused continued to swear and mumble and otherwise be a pain. he ended up swearing to the event orginizer and was asked to leave... but still. we had to endure close on 2 hours of his pity party.
whats crazy, is before i unpacked he was all self important bragging how he had 2 super hevs and a ton of tanks and would kick everyones butt....

While I don't necessarily love losing, I definitely don't have too much of a problem with it, provided my opponent was gracious and generally a good guy. What's most important to me is that there's lots of carnage, some wacky, improbable occurrences, and, if at all possible, a close, nail-biting conclusion. Luckily the people I play with generally are ok about providing me with most of the above situations (such as holding off my Howling banshees for 3 turns with a single obliterator, or having a game that came down to a single close combat.)

Kinda like how I could be playing the Cheesiest GK list this universe has ever had the misfortune to see (No offense to actual GK players. As someone who plays Imperial Guard in 40k, and who played Dark Elves in WHFB, I've dealt with this kind of thing quite a bit. My response is pretty much to ignore the person, or if they're really annoying me, to explain to them that they are not very good at the game, and that perhaps that they should find a new game to suck at just a bit less. I know that's not the nice thing to do, but I lost my tolerance for these sorts of displays a long time ago. It's one thing for a player to get frustrated during a game, but another for them to essentially attack you because you choose to collect an army of little plastic men that they don't like.
There was a time when I tried to be diplomatic with these types of people, or to try to be helpful and explain the weaknesses in my army that they could exploit. These folks, the ones that really rattle on about an army with seething, irrational venom, they don't want help. They want to inflict themselves on you, and I'm too damned old to put up with it anymore. If you're not old and prickly like I am, my best advice would be simply to brush off the comments of people that make such displays. As long as you endeavor to be an agreeable opponent to the people that you play against, you have nothing to apologize for.

That's a cute notion. But untrue. 40k is probably one of the least balanced games I can think of. There are many reasons for this. We have armies that go up to two editions without updates. GW doesn't engage in any errata/post release balancing. Different authors do very different things and design philosophy changes every couple years giving us armies like Tau and Eldar one year, CSM's and Dark Angels the next, and 5E Space Marines and Imperial Guard after those, with very distinct and highly divergent design philosophies between these three groups and much different levels of power at their release and as they've aged.
There are many other wargames out there that are much more balanced. They don't have the power of the 40k IP or the marketing and distribution capabilities GW does so they remain much smaller, but as balanced wargames go, they can very often be highly varied and still much more balanced. Games like Infinity, Heavy Gear, Firestorm Armada, etc.
There is a reason you see bandwagon hopping in 40k on armies like SW's and GK's that you don't in most other wargames. When Battlefront comes out with a new Soviet supplement, the metagame does not shift towards Soviet armies, when Dream Pod 9 comes out with new stuff, you don't get huge numbers of people gobbling up a new faction. 40k has power fluctuations and differences. Just because two armies may be of equal points doesn't make them balanced.
There is a rule book for a reason... It clearly says before game each player makes up a list to match points agreed upon before hand, then suggest to be "curteous" and show them your list/codex after the game... ( If you want to Take a gander at my Codex, go pay the 30$ i did for it and go nutz )
This assumes that costs in one book are reasonably balanced against costs in another, and that this is done within the context of the current ruleset, and that both books have all the tools and abilities required to match those in the other on a consistently even basis. None of these conditions are necessarily true.
Yes, the "oh, you play THAT army" feeling doesn't come out of nowhere, it is very often earned, fairly or not, and you don't see it's prevalence anywhere near as much in most other wargames. That attitude can suck, but it's a symptom of the way GW produces its army lists.

And because of that, everyone will love to play against you!

I am envious. I always seem to be on the wrong side of the crazy underdog victories, but I still love to hear about them, and they teach you never to underestimate a unit, no matter how squishy.

Yeah poor dice rolling definitely equates to an army being over powered... Some people just need some serious perspective in life. Of course getting raging angry over a game in the first place shows they desperately need some perspective.

So you play IG, and he plays Orks and he is bitching about then countering everything. see I would tell him to use more strategy then proceed to explain to him how to counter my army, then in the nicest way possible explain to him that its just a game and get over your self.
