Four or five centimeters? That's basically ten times the size of the ants we have in the US!

Australia is like the land that time forgot. Hopping marsupials, dingos, giant ants, huge crocodiles, the platypus... The list goes on and on. I bet Biologists had a ball cataloging and identifying all the weird stuff they have in Australia.

Ah hang on i buggered up my measurements. The big bullants will get to 2.5 cms which is 1 inch. They're also known as "Inchmen" or "You pinchy little sons of beaches".

But the fun doesn't end there! Oh no sir! We also have Fire ants (No they don't breathe fire. That would be a little extreme even for Oz.) and Jumping ants (Yes they jump.).

I bet Biologists had a ball cataloging and identifying all the weird stuff they have in Australia.
I'm sure they did. When they weren't getting mauled, maimed or eaten by it.

G'day is a term I seem to hear 247 since the visa grant (good old british humor)

Some of the other terms..... lol.

We english do use the word bugger, but depends who and how you say it. Instead of saying "o poo" they would say "o bugger" or if you are a male, and are attracted to the same sex, a bugger is something that would be performed during intercourse........

Bull ants, my son loves a program called deadly 60, basically a guy finds the worlds most dangerous animals (funnily enough he spends 90% of his time in Australia) and bull ants were on it, needless to say I'll be watching everywhere my feet and backside go.

I don't think I can get used to called footie, soccer :( but I guess thats a sacrifice I have to make lol :(

I've got a funny feeling I may here the word 'Drongo' alot!

ish, Brisbane is a bit further north and there seem to be a few of us who were planning on meeting at the Mt Gravatt (one of the southern suburbs) GW battle bunker for a game at some point. Could end up being a bit far from you for a game, but its a possibility I guess.

Thank you kindly for the wildlife lesson, I shall fully stock up on mortein ?? I can never get used to spiders, freak me out big time.

Bushman's mate. Bushman's. Mortein is the weak stuff, you want all the bugs in the world to feth off? Bushman's is your stuff.

And most of all, welcome to Aus!

Additional slang;

-C**t is used in some circles as a term of endearment, so yeah, may not necessarily be a negative if someone you make friends with calls you that after a few weeks
-Boardies as another kind of name for swim shorts, at least in Brisbane
-Freak is sometimes used in a positive manner as well (you see someone step about 3 people in a game of league, 'God that guy is a freak')
-Rabbitohs; The most successful team ever in the NRL, the Nation-wide (kind of) Rugby League competition. Support them. They are the pride of the league. Even being kicked out of the comp for being poor wasn't enough to keep us down!
-linger, pronounced ling-a, short for malingerer, someone who is faking being sick to go jack (see below)
-'going jack', a.k.a. 'dogging someone', doing something which screws another person over, for example someone going on extra tea breaks at work and leaving you in the lurch has 'gone jack' on you, or is a 'jackc**t' depending on how often they do it...
-sparrows, or 'the crack of', means early in the day, dawn

I'm sure more will come to me...

not 100% sure if the area you are moving to is bushy, but I decided wagga was the thing to go with

Rhyming slang my boy, rhyming slang.

-captain cook; have a look
-slaughtered horse; tomato sauce
-seppo; septic tank; stupid yank (sorry American users, but it is relevant slang)

I'm sure there is more, but rhyming slang was never my strong suite

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Oh we get Deadly 60 here. Me and my dad love it. Hes much better then Steave Irwin.

Yeah C*** is one of those words people use as a term of endearment it can be a bit confronting at first.

FYI - Tinnies = cans of beer.
Stubbies = small bottles of beer.
Long necks = larger bottles with long necks.

Soooooo since starting this thread, I have been advised that everything that moves (other than human) I need to keep away from, the slang people use in Australia is slightly different, I will rarely be watching my beloved Liverpool.F.C :( , what about Working / utility bills, this question can be al over the place as I understand these will vary drastically, but on average what is the cost of living over in Australia ?? E.G petrol, food, gas, electricity, water, internet??

Yeah, kind of hard to say, since the utilities all went private, bills are all over the place depending on exactly where you are and which company you go through.

In Brisbane petrol hovers between the $1.35 to $1.65 or so a litre. Tends to be a little more expensive down south, particularly in Sydney.

Haven't been on gas for a few years now, and electricity will really depend on your usage. Ours works out around $20-25 a week (set up on a direct debit, so I just ignore the bills).

Internet and phone vary hugely depending on your provider. Telstra (who used to be the publicly-owned sole phone service back in the day, so own most of the infrastructure) have the best coverage, but the worst service, and are about the most expensive. Stay away from the little companies offering services that are too cheap, though... they tend to just disappear overnight. We're with Optus on a $50 a month plan that covers home phone with a bunch of free calls and ADSL2 broadband.

Water... if you're renting, you usually only pay water if you go over a preset minimum (which is usually pretty high) unless the house is certified as having water-saving fittings, which very few rental properties do. No idea what the actual charges are... I haven't had to pay for water since I sold my house back in 2002.

Thanks for that insaniak. Great advice.

Optus looks cheap enough, $50 can't be bad.

Not paying water unless you go over a preset limit? WOW, here we have to pay roughly £500 a year, no matter what (so thats $750ish per year) so thats a plus!

Just out of curiosity, what is the minimum wage over there?

National minimum wage is $15.96 per hour according to the government page.

For more info....
http://www.fairwork.gov.au/pay/national-minimum-wage/pages/default.aspx

EDIT - So uh 10pound 43pence per hour.

Up until fairly recently, rental tenants didn't pay water at all. Water was the responsibility of the property owner, as part of their council rates.

When they brought in individual metering, councils put in a requirement that houses had to be water-efficient for that cost to be passed on, to protect tenants from getting stung because landlords didn't want to set up their properties properly.

The amount you can use before you start paying is built into your lease agreement... In the time since this came in, I haven't had to pay at all yet.

Thats good to know, cheers insan.

Minimum wage is $15.96? lol! Converted as you say is £10.43, ours is a massive £6.10 or close to it.

Asking these questions is making it seem all the more real now, only 6 weeks and a few days until we fly :O

You def dont want to be earning $15.96 an hour.

I think thats about what an 18 year old would earn at a fast food place.

a list of reasons to stay away, from one of our local funny groups... its funny I say 'our' when I'm canadian, but I've lived here over a decade now damn it!
Things are expensive here. But we get paid more so... BUT if you're able to order online and can wait awhile for stuff you can really save.
I still get gak for saying 'pop' when I ask for something to drink. It's usually just called drink. ie. Can I have some drink? Coke would be preferable.
I really hope for your sake you're not flying jetstar... I've had nothing but bad luck and worse service with them.

I just want to say that while we do have a lot of dangerous animals, and we're perversely proud of the fact, as someone living in South East Queensland, I've never seen anything more dangerous than a Red Back in the urban areas, and the huntsman spiders, while large and scary looking, are pretty harmless. In northern Queensland, or inland Australia, you'll see far more things to worry about, but in the urban areas of the south east, you don't really have much to worry about, and you're probably no more likely to be molested by the wildlife here than you are in England. Worst you'll probably get is mosquito bites and some green ant bite if you go on a pick nick (and green ants are annoying as all hell, but not deadly).

Also, just to counteract a bit of advice given by someone earlier - never use the term 'Abo'. It's usually used in a derogatory way, or taken as such. Aboriginal or Indigenous is always acceptable.

Anyway, expect a lot of g'days, and we call our friends 'mate' alot (well, usually it's 'maaaaate'), and most of the rest (well, the bits that might embarrass you to get wrong) have already been covered, so you can pick up the rest on the go

Also, jump on to WargamerAU if you haven't already, and people will be able to help you with finding games happening around the place. I'm up in Brisbane myself, but it's 1-1.5 hours away, depending on which part of the coast you're on, and which part of Brisbane ('Brissy' or 'Brisvegas') you're heading to, so a bit of a drive for a games night.

Good luck to you when you get down here

Looking for a club in Brisbane, Australia? Come and enjoy a game and a beer at Pubhammer, our friendly club in a pub at the Junction pub in Annerley (opposite Ace Comics), Sunday nights from 6:30. All brisbanites welcome, don't wait, check out our Club Page on Facebook group for details or to organize a game. We play all sorts of board and war games, so hit us up if you're interested.

Pubhammer is Moving! Starting from the 25th of May we'll be gaming at The Junction pub (AKA The Muddy Farmer), opposite Ace Comics & Games in Annerley! Still Sunday nights from 6:30 in the Function room Come along and play Warmachine, 40k, boardgames or anything else!

Thanks for that website madder, I will be sure to sign up to it. If it meant getting a game of 40k in, I would gladly drive an hours distance, I don't want to give up on battling.
