In this day and age, I doubt something like that would be a throwaway joke -- if it turns out to be legible in any shots. Pretty grim if it is true ...
Rampant speculation from me: Lex Luthor starts as a relatively ok guy. He gets some of the recovered Kryptonian tech for Lexcorp to research. He nicely asks Superman for help in developing it for the betterment of humanity. Superman refuses, basically saying humanity isn't ready for it. Lex feels it's a condescending slap in the face and that Superman clearly wants to maintain his superiority over humanity. Thus, Lex begins his descent into villainy as he tries to bring down Superman, in a twisted way to prove that humanity is strong enough to not need Superman. Lex is able to reverse engineer some of battle suit tech, outfitting himself and/or other allies, thus creating the need for the JL to be created to oppose him.

I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks
Personally I think Luthor's already going to be well down the path to cruelty when we meet him, but yeah, Luthor's appropriation of K-tech will probably figure into the plot of this movie and more to come.
I'd also lay money that Luthor isn't the only villain in the film. I'm less confident that the "bleed" voice is that villain, but I think it's a strong possibility.
It does *appear* that the DCCU will spend more time developing the world of and rise of the villains than the MCU has. And I like that a lot.
I've seen the 2 animated movies for Dark Knight Returns- love those! Peter Weller is awesome as Batman.
I'm hoping this does well. Probably not Avengers scale well, but good enough in general. Ben Affleck certainly seems to have bulked up a bit for Batman/Bruce Wayne and I quite like his power armour.
Flashman wrote: Don't have high hopes for this. It is a blatant attempt to play catch up with Marvel. If they'd just stuck with Superman and Batman and then evolved from there, it may have worked, but shoe horning the rest of the Justice League into the film is going to be a mess unless it's done via some kind of end credits preview montage.
The available information currently points to Supes and Bats in starring roles, with WW in a supporting role. Aquaman is in (probably as a cameo) and so is Ray Fisher, but maybe not as Cyborg yet. Flash isn't in it, and GL apparently even hasn't been cast yet, so he won't be in it. Is it *really* that crammed?
I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- Marvel *HAD* to do all those setup films just because Joe Six-Pack isn't as familiar with Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, etc. as he is with Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Marvel sold off the movie rights to their tier 1 properties, and so they had to spend time introducing and elevating the properties they had available to them.
-Do we really need another Batman origin film to set up JL? We really just need to get introduced to Affleck in the role and his personal Batman style and gear, right?
-Do we really need a WW solo film to explain who she is before her appearance in BvS? Note that she *IS* getting a solo film before JL, although that enterprise is in a bit of flux right now.
-Do we really need a Flash solo film first, given the TV series already explaining the character and concept (albeit not the same actor) to audiences?
-Do we need a GL do-over origin film so soon, or do you just reboot it with a another actor in JL and avoid calling attention to the other film?
-Do you spend time and resources on Aquaman and Cyborg films now, or do you introduce the characters in JL, give them some chances to steal some scenes, and build on that with future films?
I think WB's approach is sound. The JL really starts with "the trinity," and BvS and the WW film seem aimed squarely at getting that established and right. Meanwhile, Suicide Squad will help set up the world of the villains...which is quite different than the "set up villain, knock down villain" approach that Marvel has taken.
Personally, I'm really looking forward to the DCCU films, in part because they seem to promise less formulaic filmmaking, and a less jokey, cartoony tone.
I think the bigger issue is the rush. Marvel's plan is meticulous and far reaching. They have so much time between each step that as things change that have lots of time to adjust while staying on track. DC appears to be rushing to catch up. The issue is less that "they need solo films for each character!" and more that in their blind rush to catch up they don't have time to make adjustments and their plan could very easily fall apart at any moment due to the sheer complexity of the undertaking.
These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.
BvS isn't until 2016, three years after MoS. JL Part 1 won't be until 2017, 5 years after Avengers. JL Part 2 isn't until 2019. Is that rushing?
The year-by-year breakdown also doesn't make it seem as if WB is going into crazy overdrive. They're releasing fewer films than Marvel through 2019.
2016 -- DC 2 movies, Marvel 2
2017 -- DC 2 movies, Marvel 2.5 movies (Spidey being the .5)
2018 -- DC 2 movies, Marvel 3 movies
2019 -- DC 2 movies, Marvel 2 movies
2020 -- DC 2 movies, Marvel unknown
And note that the 2020 DC films are easily lopped off the schedule if movie audiences get superhero exhaustion (a distinct possibility given that list doesn't include all the Fox films). The DCCU may well end with JL2.
If you're touting how Marvel has plans out to 2030 or whatever nonsense that was that Feige spewed, you might want to consider the respective places of the two studios. While WB would be happy to keep making profitable superhero films, they'll just move onto the next thing if superhero films crap out. Meanwhile, Marvel doesn't have a studio if they aren't making films about their properties. Marvel and Disney need to keep promoting the long-term viability of these films to their investors, especially given that they have rough waters ahead to navigate after this group of stars moves on.

I disagree. I think that, much like GotG, Ant Man will raise a lot of eyebrows and be considered a potential gamble, right up until the moment it makes millions, gets rave reviews and leaves people wondering "what can't Marvel get away with?'

Wait you think a movie named "antman" is going to make lots of money?
Come on, seriously?

Agreed. Part of the reason GotG was so spectacular was the lack of pressure that came from dealing with less established characters. Gave the creative team much more freedom to focus on the story.

Let's set the italicized part aside for a moment.
Yeah, I think Ant-Man will make money just because Marvel came across an interesting formula for using its movies to promote one another. RIGHT NOW, the quality of the film almost doesn't seem to matter so long as tie-ins/wisecracks/guest-stars/end-of-credits scenes/lots of yuks. We've seen formula filmmaking before -- Elvis movies are a great example -- but with Marvel films the stars don't even seem to matter so long as we're not talking about RDJ.
Witness the director changes for both Ant-Man and Thor 2, in both cases rumored to be about Marvel making demands regarding the style and content of the film. The formula is everything to Marvel. As you can see from "Ant-Man squares off against Thomas the Tank Engine, and the yuks don't stop!!!"
But see, whether it's gambling, football, investing, or filmmaking, I never trust the guy who thinks he has the magic system or formula. Eventually it ends badly.
Nope. But GotG didn't need much of a story because it had likable, interesting characters.
I just wanted Earl to take off the makeup and start killing zombies one handed...

I'm not much of a comic-ey person, but, the way I've seen it, the best way for Lex Luthor to be a legitimate threat to Superman is quite simply, make him right. From a certain point of view.
It's kinda weird really, Superman Returns was a complete mess of a film in many ways, including Lex, yet somehow, just somehow... For some insane crazy reason, inside that awful toupee wearing disaster of a film...
