Ta Anvildude, something to keep in mind.

Good start Kingpin54.

Cleatus: I even drilled and pinned the sprue frame. I don't want anything rattling around inside.
That's a perfectly normal way to count tubes. My current count is therefore ~38... and still plans for more.

Lots of nice ideas, Kestral.

Great ideas everyone! I'm dying to get started, hopefully going to order what I need at the start of the week.

Mostly, on my phone.

Guildenstern, great use of recycled junk - I used a pringles tube last contest, and those smoothie lids have been everything from baneblade wheels to ac vents.
DrH, that's some mighty fine tubing there, impressively structural.

Guildenstern, nice assortment of starting materials there.

Casey, what are you ordering? Or is it a secret?

Dr H, very nice.

As for me, I'm undecided if I'm going to build something for this round. Just for fun, of course. I have plenty of tubes at home in my scrap box, that's for sure!

Not where I should be

Tons of promise here, all looking good so far.

Been delayed by a large project, but still can't decide what to go for here anyways.

Ideas:

Adeptus Refinery equipement, aimed at the new armeggedon game coming up (definately buying that)

Tube station, as in large board section fully playable.

Ork distillary. it wont be small.

Any and all these ideas are up for grabs peeps, if they inspire you go for it. I am not sure which to do, getting excited by the ork distillery, but then I would.

Lets see some more WIP, I need a challenge.

(ignore the dice and text, there for my plog and how I decided that this piece will be in a historical(ish) Japanese theme)

Cleatus: If you feel the need to build something, don't fight the inspiration.

Good show all. Bring on the wip shots.

Speaking on which:
I've added some more pipes and some structural supports for them...

As my unique use of sprue I went for unique sprue rather than a unique use; I've used sprue for so many things it's almost impossible to come up with a really new thought. But I realised that I've usually used straight bits of sprue, discarding the bent bits and corners (for later use as greebles... come to think about it, I may add a few here...), therefore I pulled out some of the most oddly shaped bits of sprue and combined them into a support structure for the large pipes (gave the little perfectionist in me a fit; "it's not straight lines...").

I then made use of the various lumpy bits by attaching guide wires to help the support / pipe structure in strong winds.

More to do: A few rivets here and there, some other small details, the usual mud n' rocks, some plant-life, and then there's painting...

I really need more wires and such

I have some floral wire but I think I need to raid my older/dead computer bits

Hiya!! WIP
Love all the work done so far, and feeling inspired.

These are some of the materials used in my piece.

The idea is to play with lighting , and the piece is set underground. I first started with creating my rock formation with tin foil, then added random piping as i saw fit, paper mache over the tin foil and painted a simple grey base coat.

Dr H, I like your use of odd sprue. Good for you. Will you paint it blue?

Guildenstern, I'm intrigued by the propeller on top of that red Pringles tube. What is it, precious?

Shinigami-Ren, nice use of foil and Papier-mâché. That turned out really good! Are you basing on a saw blade?

OOhh Shinigami-Ren that's looking awesome! really like how it's organic looking at same time as having tech stuffs

@Cleatus - it's another toddler applesauce container lid =D not as common as the lovely vent type ones sadly

Thanks Guilden'. Painting is not going to be a difficult as it looks. The airbrush has managed to cover all surfaces without needing to twist and turn into odd angles. although it's possible when I pick it up there will be a blank area hidden from view. But I don't think there is...

Good start, Shinigami-Ren. Like the rock texture you have there.
Have a look at giving all those pipes a purpose (and/or destination). Try to answer the question "why are these pipes coming from/to this rock?"; it'll help with the final product.

Cleatus wrote:Dr H, I like your use of odd sprue. Good for you. Will you paint it blue?
Thanks Cleatus. Good to hear (after all, you are the one to please ).
Any particular reason for blue, other than rhyming?
Not decided on colours, will see how it goes. Main colour so far will be a dirty metal (see recent works by Nerdfest for an idea); and there will be many many signs and notices.

Would you all like to see it primed?
Always good to see a model come together once it's all the same colour. This one in particular is a lot less confusing now it's grey.

Need to go in and sand a few areas smooth(er) and then black all the hard to reach areas and start basecoating...

Loving the WIPs Dr H, Shinigami-Ren, Guildenstern.
All of them making me question my decision to eschew the industrial and go for a more naturalistic setting.

Cork tile, cereal box, insulation foam and sprue. all looks a bit weird because of several coats of artists Gel medium and Pumice sand to vary the textures.
That's the last of the groundwork done, all that's left is the tubeage...and paint, don't forget the paint...and flock...

Awesome work everyone! I'm waiting on my main structure to arrive but I've been calculating all the scales and making notes and drawings so I can hit the ground running. Hopefully get my first WIP up soon.

you know what, i'm in. this will be my first time doing any sort of scratch building, but i'm going to set the bar high. I'm going to create the head of an emperor class titan that has been split apart to show the inner workings and to give models space to move around

how's that for a decent idea

and there will be a LOT of tubes around that head

EDIT: cut down old copper bits I've acquired over the years and am using and old bucket as a base, recycling for the win

Note that this is still VERY rough, not filed or bent to shape yet. Just purely cut. I'm just showing the materials right now.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So no pics yet, but I may have gone a little overboard and started building an entire fallen upper half of an emperor class so look forward to the WIP pics from that

Wow the stuff here is great. I've never really dabbled in terrain but I'm getting burnt out on my other projects so will give this one a think, also gives me an excuse to buy lots of pringles

Thanks Graven'.

Interesting start, Z-Ray. Look forward to seeing where the tubes go.

Kingpin54, Will have to see what Cleatus says to make it official, but I'd be fine with him joining in without needing an account (you have one so he does by-proxy).
Good start Littlepin.

We like ambition around here Xjax1. Look forward to more.

Good to hear, Boundless08. We aim to encourage everyone to build their own terrain and produce nicer gaming tables for everyone.

Keep it up everyone.

And unfortunately, the clay I was using on my Titan body cracked and didn't cure right so I'm back to just a head

These things happen with scratch-building, Xjax1. Do not be disheartened though.

Sometimes you can go with the problem and make it a feature. Other times, if it's too far gone for the current project, save it for later and build something else around it. Nothing is wasted when you scratch-build.

Look at it this way, with just the head it'll be quicker and easier to finish on time.

I am quite agree with DrH. Sometimes accidents can work in your favour, sometimes not. But I think just a head may look better, actually

Sorry for the hiatus folks. My life has been a little too "exciting" lately. So it goes.

Dr H, no reason, I was just having fun with rhyming. It looks great. So much detail.

Z-Ray, I'm getting a very Futurism vibe. Cool.

KINGPIN54, yes your son may enter. We need to encourage the next generation after all! Just please make sure that there is adult supervison when he's handling scissors, etc.

Xjax1, welcome! Don't worry about the clay cracking. Roll with it. Battle damage, etc.

boundless08, you're welcome to join.

Alister92, here's your chance. Let's see what you can do.

I'm very pleased with what I'm seeing so far. Plenty of time left. Keep at it!

Thank you!
And now i have some ideas...
On my fictional planet Gharland clear water is the one of moust needed things. Many settlements have'nt even one well of clear water. In this situation, all what the people can - filter the water they have.

So that, i'l try to build local filtre station, that will giwe some clear, non-poizoned water to one of Gharland settlements.
