I remember a while back reading how the Skull on the Xenos Index has appeared in a few other places, was that skull ever identified as any of the known W40K races? The wording of this implies Xenos and something Malicious or at least Mysterious, so i highly doubt it's something Imperial. That skull appearing on the cover of the index and a few other places does seem odd if it wasn't hinting at something, maybe it's related to this?

No this has been teased and built up in the lore for awhile. Typically most didn’t see it coming. You don’t waste an entire warhammer world on expected nothing announcement.

The skull was never id’ed. It is closest resembling to rak’gol.

That actually does look like something when upside down. There's a helm with a "top knot" like thing on top and just below the open faced helm is an amulet and shoulders

I have a hunch, based on personal hopes and some hints in the codexes, that Oldcrons are returning in some fashion.

Honestly, the 'helmet' in the mirror image looks like a Custodes helmet but the shoulders are waaaaaaaaaay off and super pointy.

Seems a bit dramatic for just a codex announcement. Might be a new campaign based around Necrons, though, to coincide with their codex release.

When flipped like that I see an armoured figure with shoulderplates and a catlike (panther) helmet.

Look at the skull in the stars that look necron to you?

See, I'm not sure anyone is actually looking at the same sections. When I look at the line directly up the centre, I see a lot of eldritch symbols and patterns. If I look at the entirety of the blue space, then yes, I can see it looks vaguely like the elongated, rectangular heads of the Necrons when looked at directly.

But then I can also flip it upside down



And that looks like something else, or someone else, entirely.

The next 3 codices to be released.
They have Watched = Deathwatch
They have Waited = Necrons
They are Coming = Tau Empires

It seems like they have been announcing each wave of new books in sets of threes (could be wrong). So that is my guess.

Honestly I see the skulls but I also see an aspect warrior helmet. Maybe more Ynnari?

I could honestly see that being a possibility (Well, other than the them being female thing). Because I no longer believe GW has those set aside for people to 'make their own thing' - that's too much of a relic of the old days. You can already make your own Chapters and all. They are actively said to be destroyed/gone/lost. The setting is just much more detailed now than back in the day.

Combine with Heresy Writers being told not to mention even rumors of the potential fates of the Legions and that scene in one of the Heresy books where Dorn and the Sigilite talk about them as if they COULD be called back to face the Heresy.

Would I be willing to bet money on it? Heck no. Well, maybe a dollar because the odds would be so against it I'd come out with enough money to pay for a pro-painted army at 10,000 points and take a super nice vacation to boot. But yeah, super unlikely. But there's a logic that could be applied!
