So I was quite excited for a 7th edition starter set. I was planning on going in about 60/40 with a friend to help him get started and I'd get the rules as this was how I was planning to get the rules (unfortunately still in 6th edition). So at first I was quite excited to see Stormclaw, but then I realized it was limited edition and I was out of town for its release. So where should I go from here? Should I attempt to buy it of another website, wait for something else, or simply nothing? I thank anyone who helps me.

Check your local store to see if they have any. If they don't, hold your cash for the upcoming codex models release. Me personally, see them adding new wolfen models, maybe some flyer, and a new beast.

We shall see! We prob just get those AA tanks sm got, and GW calls it a day lol.

If you can, call your local shop (if it's non GW). They tend to reserve a couple extras and would probably have a copy for you. It is a great set, and if you only care about the rule book, you can get the set overpriced on a different site and sell off what you don't want.

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

If GW really doesn't want your money, I wouldn't force them to take it personally. In this digital age you can get everything you need online if they don't want to sell it to you.

It's not a starter. Also, go to frontlinegaming.org they'll sell you one on preorder.

DV is being rereleased. GW has already said that. And the info on it will be in the next WD. GW has also already said that.

Stormclaw ISN'T a 'starter'.

DA/DV is being re-released as the 7th ed starter with 7th ed rulebook.

Stormclaw is a "Campaign pack" - like they did back in 2nd ed with the DA/orks one - "Storm of vengeance" (which was missions and terrain, mainly).

It has two armies worth of models and a small rulebook.

How is it not a starter?

Apparently that's not enough for some people. If it doesn't have dice and a ruler, it somehow doesn't count as a starter. Though i don't recall getting dice in my Dystopian Wars starter. Or the Infinity ones.

However, the main reason that it's not a starter is that it's not a product with maintained availability. It's a limited run box set, which means it's not suitable to be considered a starter, even though some people will use it as one, because it's not available for new players to get.

I think availability is way more important of a consideration than dice or templates or whatever.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

You don't get dice or a ruler in a Battleforce or Battalion.

Do you call those starters?

Now compare your old Infinity "starter set"(read: a faction starter meant to equate to a Battleforce or Battalion) to the forthcoming Operation: Icestorm.

Seems like a meaningless distinction to me. A starter is something that you get in order to get started. Faction. Two player. With templates, without. I don't care. If it's a product that will get you started and is either designed that way or is sufficiently similar to one, it can be called a starter. Or people can concentrate on how it's different than other so-called starters and say it shouldn't be counted as a starter. Does it really matter?

And yeah, for a lot of people a battleforce is their starter in the game. Regardless of whether or not you think that counts. I'd say in a lot of ways the battleforces are designed specifically to get you started in a given army.

For me, Stormclaw is a bad starter product because it isn't sufficiently available to get anyone started anymore. It's limited in production. if you can't get it, you can't use it to get started. If someone did manage to get it and will be using it as their introduction to 40k, then it is their starter.

The important thing is the set contains the rules.

It can hardly be a starter set without a rulebook.

Anyway, back on topic, I should think the next in the campaign series will be out in a month or so. Keep your eye open and bag a copy. It presumably will have the rulebook in it.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

If the campaign scenarios included are actually fun and a good way to approach 40k, they should really pump these out. Like 4-6 different ones each year. The main problem with the codex menu army list approach is that it can often devalue models by requiring just so many of them, but if you've got an endless stream of campaign scenarios that make good use of just the models in the box, that can go a long way to having rules make miniatures seem more valuable rather than less.

The only disadvantage is that players who are not into Space Wolves or Orks are left out in the cold.

However it should be fairly easy for GW to write scenarios for campaigns involving other factions (e.g. Tau versus Necrons, IG versus Eldar, etc) and publish them digitally with lists of recommended figures to buy.

Everything doesn't have to be done to directly sell boxes of models. Stimulate interest in the game overall, and players will start to buy stuff.

One advantage of new technology, and GW's recent purchase of new machinery, as well as recruitment of more design staff, means that the set-up cost for new print runs is slightly less (especially for books, which they print in China).

This means they can probably turn a neat profit on smaller production runs, of 5-10,000 campaign sets. Although it doesn't state officially in the new WD that it's the first of a series of campaign boxes, the rumour seems convincing. It's a good way of reviving/updating a faction between codices.

I'm almost sure I remember reading "First in our [line/series?] of..." [expansions] somewhere related to Stormclaw, but I can't recall where. WD? Newsletter mail? Some ad on their site?
