Hey guys,

Bad but quick photos of new force I'm starting up. I really enjoy the 5th company look (yellow/black) and I really wanted a dirty, battle-worn look. Let me know what you think! It's very hard to get most of the scrapes and bullet dmg detail in the pictures. But for quick purposes let me know what you think of them from what you can see.

Thanks!

That yellow is awesome. The bases are great too.
Only 1 criticism which I don't know is valid - the chest eagle gets lost a bit. I think black or red would look better. However I don't know what the standard colours are.
The face on the character is great.
The weathering is nice subtle. Maybe dirty up the feet a bit with some grey powders?

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Good smooth yellow. The black on the shoulderpads looks a little lumpy. Not sure if that is part of the edgeing/weathering, or the need for thinner coats. One of those things that you only really notice in the close ups though.

I agree that the eagles look like they need a little something, they tend to blend in with the yellow armor, and could use a little “pop”. Not sure what would help.

But very nice marines overall.

On the chest eagles a black or dark brown wash might help to define them. I'd also go a bit further with the weathering - sponged on chips, powders etc but it's down to preference how clean or dirty you want to go. I would say the silver chips and scratches don't have much contrast with the yellow, you might try a dark red brown for the chips first and then some light silver on top of that.

Thanks guys for the reply! I think the silver chips combined with the lighting is making the black look more lumpy. In person it doesn't look that way. I did the chest eagles by base coat of hashut copper, inked with seraphim Serpia, inked again with agrax earthshade, then highlighted again with hashut copper. As far as the battle smg I'm going to take a few more pics of the bullet holes I did on a few, a lot of the scrapes are silver but some damage I did add scorched brown to bring them out.

The pics might be a bit over exposed... Maybe try putting them further away from the light source?

Looking Great maybe some subtle weathering with some browns or Metallics?

They look great I love the sargents head.
I agree above they do need a bit more umf with the weathering to make it standout more.

Thanks all for the feedback. Luther I took the time to look at some of your work, which is great btw. Here are some more photos of the "battle-damage". I'm working on the rest of the squad (hopefully done this weekend), and will post some more pictures up of them all in the next few weeks.

Btw, I also re shaded the sergeants emblem (chest) with another coat of aggrax earthshade. For some reason his seamed lighter then the other two, which might be because i forgot the step. Should look better now.

Preparation was key. I had no interest in spending the time to paint on the yellow by hand. I built the models and made the bases, but when I glued the legs onto the bases I used a tiny dot of glue so I could remove them easily. After all were built, I removed the bases from each model. I spray painted the bases, whats called "panzer grey". Keep in mind the bases are all done at this point ( rocks and wire ), so they can be highlighted with the fig. For the marines I started with a VERY light coat of army painters white. So light you can still see a some gray. It's only purpose to bring that yellow out a little better than the grey would. Then I finish with two light coats of Army Painters daemonic yellow.

Glue the bases back on and start painting.

Now the trick here is to have as little touch up as possible, so you have to be extremely neat while doing the base colors. Even with the wash, I don't flood the model, I only put ink where it needs to be. So it's a bit more time consuming. After base colors and after inking, I just highlight everything with one final coat or lighter shade. Nuln oil ink goes on metallics, seraphim sepia on the yellow crevices. Aggrax on base and chest. I highlight bases with codex gray, then white mixed with codex grey. Paint the barbed wire bolt gun metal.

Then I add all the scrapes/ weathering last. I could have highlighted in white around all the armor edges. or with a bright yellow, but I decided against this and went with the more worn look. Besides, Outlining armor is, IMO, dreadful.....battle damage is super fun and you can pretty much create whatever you like. You get some pretty interesting results, and not every one model looks the same. I was also inspired by that previous pic I posted.

Did you have and problems with the Demonic Yellow undercoat? In your opinion would you say that the first white primer made it pop more? If so any cons with a straight Demonic Yellow over the model as the initial coat?

Well, I tested plain deamonic yellow on a gray model with one of my spare marines and it seems to be slightly more dull than the ones where I undercoated them white first. You don't have to cover the whole model in white first either, its just to get the shoulder pads and raised surfaces really. You can leave a bit of gray still visible. It tends to blend really well after you do the two coats of yellow. Here are some more pictures. Since i started to get more comfortable with this process I started to batch paint, this time I did 4 at a time. ENJOY!

That yellow is exceptional. I am legitimately impressed. You're not just using a yellow primer and then painting the rest of them up, are you? Even if you are, it really looks good.
