JRN - Absolutely gorgeous. I might have to steal the scroll pinny idea at some point. Have you made her gun arm into a flint lock firing mechanism? It looks like it and I'm stunned. I'm really looking forward to seeing her painted.

Sorry about the absence, was doing the repaint again, for a 3rd time on the skin. I think I've got it right now. The whole miniature has undergone a radical change, the skin being more bone-yellow, while the shell got a feathering/texturing treatment to save it from flat-surface syndrome. I'm not sure if it can be considered better than before, but I'm sticking with it, as school and an impending family holiday are going to cut into my painting time very soon.

I'll be doing more work tonight, and hopefully have PIP pictures either tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest.

LOL... You got me. But no, seriously... mine was legitimately BAD... yours by comparison... is no comparision at all!

The only thing I hate is that repaints (good thing I use really REALLY thin paints) is that the more you do it, the more it obscures detail... but yea, I hope you're as pleased with your miniature as all of us are looking at it! It's great! Stay tuned... although I don't think mine will be quite as stunning...

Thanks for the comments guys. Now onto painting...

The cold reaches of space

Good morning, everyone! As promised, repaint pics! (3rd time for the skin, 2nd time for the armor… )

The originals had a slate-grey armor with wear and blue for skin. I liked the skin, but it was a bit too plain for me, especially the armor. I tried a repaint of the skin for more of a brown-yellow-bone scheme, but had the wrong darkening-paint in mind and came out with pinkish white. What. The. . I repainted it yet again and finally got the scheme I wanted, then proceeded to cover the shell portions in an lime green/olive green. I took it down by darkening the olive and going up by mixing white and bleached bone, while leaving portions of the green out of the HLs. Mottled the skin, and now starting on the head-gem and body armor.

Here he is in his current incarnation- pleased, but not fully (although, it may just be my personal frustration at this point playing with my mind ) The body/leg armor has just been started, so no darkening/HL/battle damage yet, as is the red gem on his head.

And here he is on the sides- for the side spheres, I decided to make them compound eyes, going from the same dark olive-green and HL up with oldskool GW emerald green, scorpion green and white. Note to self: Alcohol helps with shakey hands… probably not in the long run, but I had a good time doing his real eyes and the compounds. I was saving the chitin connectors for later, hence the funky olive-neon green color, but I’ve actually grown to like it, and will consider what to paint them, if anything at all…

I mottled the skin as well closest to the torso and knees, but in doing so, kinda took away the darkening work done on the crevices. ANOTHER thing I’ll have to redo later.

Anyways, that’s it for now. Claws/stinger will probably be a grey-black to white, a couple of browns for his straps, a brownish-green for his tyranid gauntlet, and nothing coming to me yet for his pistol. Comments and critiques always welcome.

P.S. – can someone tell me how to use the PMW symbol? I’m absolutely clueless. What program do I need? Thanks in advance.

@Hf Izanagi Hey matety . Like the new racing green and cream scheme. I yhink mine neeeds a repaint too :-(
1)
to use the symbol just click this link
http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/8844/pmw.png
right click and save as pmw.png with fire fox
or
right click save picture as pmw, save type .png with IE8

2)
download gimp from here (gimp 2.6)
http://www.gimp.org/

3)
open up your miniature picture in gimp

File
Open
"pimp my wizard model picture.jpg "

4)
then open up the logo too
File
Open
PMW.PNG

now you should have two images open, your picture miniature and the PMW.PNG logo

5)
then with the logo window selected dark blue instead of light blue ;-) copy and paste the logo into the other window with your picture of your miniature in it.
Edit is next to file top left of the window

Edit
Copy /Ctrl C

then copy the logo and paste it into your picture ( will probably be too big and need resizing and moving at the moment ;-) )

6)
Edit
Paste /Ctrl V
the Pmw.png logo into the miniature picture.

7)
Then use the tools on the left hand side to reduce the the size and move it into your desired position.

Spoiler:

Movement tool ( shown in picture in pink ;-))
resize tool
8)
then save as ( whatever.jpg and upload ;-))

hope this helps matey. i couldnt get the png to work with MS Paint which would be easier

Hey Neil! Thanks for the compliment and the tutorial! I appreciate it! Not sure what yours is looking like at the moment, but yea, I really wasn't feeling mine. Hopefully I can finish this guy up soon... I've still got the water effects on the base to put down. Are you going for one shocking reveal? Or are you putting up PIPs too?

Damn if only I had waited a few more day I wouldn't have needed to learn that damn program myself....ok I only learnt how to add the PMW stamp. I even managed to tilt the stamp and make the background translucent.

JRN - Weird and wacky is the name of the game in the 41st millennia. So flint lock las weaponry doesn't seem that odd.

HF Izanagi - third scheme....effort dude. The others looked good but so does this one. Instead of painting the skin again paint the weapons and he is pretty much done I'm going for the big reavel in 10 days time....then I'll be off to GW for my next Nelson sculpt.

Neil - Thanks again for that PMW stamp. Hope things are going well for you at the moment.....as for the repaint are you sure? The colours looked good last time I saw her.

I need to paint my models skin and weapon and consider an extra highlight on the storm coat (I know CM Dante would approve) and then I think I'm done. The oddest thing about this model has been painting metallic thread, I'm really hoping the matt varnish wont ruin it.

@Peter- LOL... effort, I suppose... more like stupidity, as I laid down paint I wasn't committed to. I should have just chilled and drank a glass of wine while looking at it, hoping the scheme would come to me. Instead, I wanted to move forward without purpose... That, and the thin layers of paint take a longass time to do. But at least it brought me to this scheme, so I'm pleased. A third highlight, you say? I'm looking forward to it.

@Baiyuan- Welcome back! Looking forward to your updates (if you do PIP) or final reveal (if you go the route of everyone else). The look of the grey/bone-chitin is growing on me as well, and I don't think I'm going to recolor his "bonding"- I like that term. I didn't know what to call it, but that's as good a term as any. Thanks again!

@Neil- Actually, I gotta agree with Peter. A recolor? The red was looking very sweet...

I've got more pics of progress from tonight, but I'm tired and not in the mood to sort them out and put them up. I'll do that tomorrow. Minor details- Chest plate, leggings, painted and chipped... tyranid plate gauntlet detailed. And claws given the base-color. Adds up to the final product though.

@ niel101: Great work on the PMW.png-image.

I've finally primed my figure. And managed to do so without the dreadful unwanted textures we seen from white priming spray.
So far so good. Should start painting Friday evening...

Here is the white PMW-figure and also an orc that I am currently working on...

Oooh! Very smooth, JRN! Also digging the massive Ork figure too!

Oh yea... has anyone here used weathering powder before? And if so, homemade or storebought? (and if homemade, how? Pastel chalk?) I'm thinking of using some for certain areas of my bug's armor, as well as around his feet/legs, show he's been jumping around on some dusty concrete... a mini-tut would be much appreciated on how to use it, as this will also be a first...

-Remi

-EDIT- Sorry guys, no new pictures today. Power went out an hour or so after my previous message... I had a feeling I should have taken the pictures last night after working... New pics tonight/in 8 hours, maybe?

@PDH: Looks great very nice, eager to see the paint on it now!

@Remi: Thats a lovely repaint. I actually liked the first scheme, but this does look much better, great job!

@JRN: Great build, cant wait to see the brilliance in the paintjob.

Im afraid ive done nothing more to my model, but ive got my mojo back again now, so i fully plan to do as much as possible to it before the deadline. I highly doubt it will see paint by the 10th but i should be able to build it! :s

I have. The weathering was on tanks, rather than figures... but the theory should work. There's a walkthrough everything we were taught on the Forgeworld Masterclass Tank day in my guard blog. The post is here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/450/251332.page#2414407

When I first saw the Chaos sorcerer model I was like "there's my next aspiring sorcerer." So I slapped a CSM backpack on him, gave him a skull for a head, and voila, done.

Or so I thought. You guys are making me step up the game. By the time I'm done with this joker now he'll have guitar strings coming out of every orifice and at least one superfluous cybernetic piece of hardware.

Awesome work, everyone.

Sharkvictim - Cheers. You're not doing 40k right if you don't have tubes sticking out of every orifice and a bit of superfluous cybernetic hardware. I imagine that ones umbilical cord would be bionic in the 41st Millennium.

HF Izanagi - for a human model I would literally dust on a little concrete coloured pigment right before sealing (from a distance).

endtransmission - very cool link

JRN - lovely Orc. Which white primer did you use to not to get the textured effect.

@ endtransmission: I second PDH's word on the link. Very nice and useful post. Makes me want to paint a vehicle - which I have barely never done or wanted to do!

@ PDH: I actually used the unpredictable Citadel Skull white primer. So with this session being perfect, I suspect that when I prime up next years big competition project I will be tearing out my hair looking at a fluffy ball of spray paint!

Dammit, dammit... dammit. I was hoping to do more painting yesterday evening and tonight, but the fickle storms of Chaos decided to blow up the transistor (and I'm talking out of my arse here, as I'm no electrician), or so I gathered from my neighbors... it's been two days without power to my apartment. No power, no light. No light... no painting. What a waste of time, especially during crunchtime.

@Sharkvictim- This I gotta see! Do you have a P&M thread somewhere we can follow? I've been staving it off for a while, but I think I'll have to pick up some guitar wire myself... soon.

@PDH- Yea... it'll be minor dustings... some for rust, to show his armor and gun have seen quite a few battles but being a scavenger, doesn't know how to maintain it at all... So most likely, a bit of rust for the body armor, and... scared to do it... but maybe a bit of concrete along his feet/shins... Question- Can you grind up Pastel Chalk for this? Good idea, or suicidal?

@JRN - I've also noticed I've had a good streak with Citadel Skull White spray these past few months...only to get kicked in the nuts using Rustoleum on my 1K sons... And I never knew that about your pic- I really like it, BTW- painting, as well as the fact that that Inq is rocking a colonial-style curly wig. It takes balls to do something like that and still waste heretics. I'd be scared of someone like that moreso than a guy fully armed like 54mm Tyrus. (sp? - puritanical inq w/ power armor)... hair like that makes him a target... but no one has taken him out yet. Kudos, sir!

I believe you can grind up pastels/chalks for the weathering powders, but I've not tried it yet.

I keep meaning to try with some green pastels so I can have thin layers of scum and mould on the tanks... must remember to buy some next time I go to Hobbycraft
