My copy of the rulebook arrived today from Amazon (a month earlier than they supposedly expected!).

It looks excellent so far. Quick and easy, but with some tactical depth around the captain & first mate options, which all look very cool. Most of your kinda 80s to 00s low-medium budget TV SF tropes are in there.

Mine arrived today, just putting together some cannon fodder (troopers), they're going to be really simple to paint and look decent,

look forward to seeing how they go together with some Millennium's Edge stuff when I've build a few more properly

Ah, good timing, my copy of the rules arrived today so I can put my concerns to the test. My gut feeling is that the powers are quite underwhelming, certainly compared to Frostgrave but also compared to Ghost Archipelago. Most abilities will hurt you even if you succeed (like GA's Blood Burn, though that was harsher) but you also have to give up your non-move action.. namely, your attack.. to use a power whereas GA's heritor abilities did not and were mostly 'free' reactions to something else. So in a game where you are probably only going to get around 6-7 turns in a scenario, this feels kind of awkward. This is particularly true when there are only three 'attack' abilities and many of the 'self buff' abilities telegraph what you are going to do next turn.

It kinda feels like the smart money is to get as many out of game abilities as possible so that you don't 'waste' turns not attacking with your best model on the table. That, or your captain hangs out in the back like a coward, buffing all the soldiers or Doing Things With Robots. That's certainly a valid use of the captain, but I guess I imagined my captains would be more Ripley and less Gorman

Anyway, we shall see how much of an issue this really is once I try out Dead or Alive.

Yeah I am hoping it's well balanced. It looks that way. Like the obvious power move is to make all your soldiers robots, so they don't get penalties for being wounded, but that comes with the downside of making them harder to heal, and you can't make your captain or first mate robots, so you'd still need to consider two forms of healing...

That said, armour remains ridiculously effective -- realistic I guess. With 6 gear slots for captain, 5 for first mate, I can't see any sensible loadout much different than combat armour (2) and medkit (1) for each, carbine or shotgun (2) for first mate, and whichever 3-slot weapon you fancy for your captain (almost certainly rapid fire). Combat armour is balanced out by the 50 cred per game maintenance cost -- but it should easily pay for itself with increased survivability for your leaders.

I'll be really interested to see how the increased availability of ranged weapons has an impact on gameplay, compared to FG and GA. Hopefully not a huge amount if the terrain is as dense as recommended.

Robots are also vulnerable to being taken over by the other side.

If you want a jedi-type dooder, armour also gets in the way of popping powers so there is a down side.

Trooper box build notes, the arms are mostly paired and numbered at the shoulder (if you've not noticed)

left arm 1 doesn't really work as I think it was intended (slapping a magazine in the smg) so you'll need to do a bit of putty work at the shoulder,

alternatively it may work as an unhelmeted head talking into the wrist com

left arm 8 has a lump at the top of the shoulder where it looks like a cadian style shoulder pad should be glued unlike any of the other trooper arms

not a huge deal but if you paint it before you notice it doesn't match it may annoy you (i'll be trimming mine off)

Spoiler:

each of the 4 sprues provides

1 pistol (this arm pair is actually from the crew box as the trooper one is in a double handed firing pose which I didn't want)
2 SMG
2 Carbines
4 Rifles
1 Sniper Rifle
1 Squad Machine Gun
1 RPG launcher
(so you'll have a bunch spare as each sprue had 5 bodies)

also 1 knife arm, and 1 knife in a fist that can be used to replace a hand on a left arm, plus for the troopers belts assorted pouches, grenades, pistol holsters, a knife, and an empty sheath

5 helmeted heads (+1 with monocular) shown above, 5 helmeted heads (+1 with monocular, +1 at 70% size? wierd ) in different style, 3 bare male heads, 3 bare female heads, 1 odd small helmeted head

Pretty sure the helmet at "70% size" is a female helmeted head. It's with the female heads, and has a slightly softer nose.

It wasn't working when I tried yesterday - looked like they left out some link code when they updated the page, so the card and template links were merged. Working now, though.

Awesome, mine came today and did not take six weeks, once again proving that removing Royal Mail from the equation is the best thing ever.

Did a quick check and everything is present, so I've got something to look forward to when I've got the time to properly delve into things. Only minor annoyance is that the free metals don't have tabs or pegs under their feet, minor I know, but I like to use slotta bases for this project and tabs / pegs always make for a better bond in my experience.

Absolutely. Though, I think that's not a huge risk. I reckon most warbands will either be robot-heavy or robot-free. The former might have a good chance of taking over your robots, but you'll have a good chance of taking theirs! Robot-free warbands are much less likely to have robot experts. Though given that everyone can take 1-2 non specialism powers, you can certainly grab Control Robot just to keep your enemies on their toes.

Earlobe deep in doo doo

Reading the rules my main bugbear is going to be lack of weapon types. Theres a nice heavy grade sniper rifle on the sprue but no rules for it. I'd have liked an SMG, Rifle and Blaster option at least.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

There aren’t specific rules for sniper rifles, but there are rules for snipers. The benefits of the weapon have just been rolled into the troop type. Equally, you could use the sniper rifle to represent an ever increasing shooting stat in your captain or XO.

I know it was speculated on a few pages back based off the Frostgrave miniature sizes, but could you take a photo of a Stargrave mini next to something Wargames Atlantic or Maelstrom's Edge if you have one of those around?

I'm still having trouble visualizing how different the heights actually are and if the proportions for helmets and whatnot might be compatible.

My concern is that I suspect we're going to see some optimal builds emerge, just because of the increased versatility as compared to FG and GA. Like, right now, I see the majority of captains having combat armour, medkit, and rapid fire gun, and the majority of first mates, combat armour, medkit, and either shotgun or carbine (probably shotgun because you might as well make your captain a shooter and your first mate a utility character, so the shotgun is mostly there to discourage enemies from getting too close). And, I think we'll see a few of the powers emerge as must-haves. Bait & Switch looks promising, as one. I don't think you'd ever regret giving both captain and first mate this one... and you can always do so, if you want.

(I know there is a downside to combat armour -- upkeep cost -- but I am pretty sure it pays for itself every single game in terms of increased survivability for your key units.)

heads are certainly compatible, with the bare human heads being basically the same size (the helmeted trooper heads show are much chunkier)

MEdge Broken see to be slightly larger, but less chunky on the arms/legs, as do WGA lizard men

i'll see if I can find some gene stealer cultists, cadians and other WGA stuff & take some pics tomorrow

Edit 1

GW cultist, Stargrave Trooper, GW poxwalker, Stargrave Trooper, GW GSC Magos, Stargrave Trooper, GW GSC

Medge Broken alien head, Stargrave Trooper, Medge Broken human head, Stargrave Trooper, GW GSC cadian body, Medge Broken human head, Stargrave Trooper

Edit 2

Frostgrave Gnoll with stargrave arms, stargrave trooper, female head stargrave trooper, stargrave trooper male head, Medge arm, Medge Broken with Stargrave arm

arm swaps between Stargrave troopers and Medge Broken work fine, although hand size/sculpting is noticeably different so both arms from one kit works best (or swapping out the hand)

Edit 3

WGA WWI German, WGA WWI German with stargrave arm, Stargrave Trooper, WGA Grognard, WGA Grognard with stargrave arm, Stargrave trooper, Medge Broken with Stargrave arms, Stargrave trooper

the WGA Germans can be used for head swaps, but the bodies and arms don't work with the stargrave stuff as they're much more true scale/less heroic (I'm guessing that will be the same for their wwii stuff too)

the WGA Grognards work well, both for head swaps and arm swaps (so the other deathfields kits should be fine too)

sorry I can't find my WGA raumjager or any of my unbuilt GW cadians (I suspect I was going to do a project with them, and put them all somewhere 'sensible' when I last tidied my work area so i'm not going to see them again until I cave in and buy some more)

So, having not got the rules, and just looked at the Crew build thing.
We have Pistol, Carbine, Flamethrower, Grenade Launcher, Sniper (uses Carbine rules with extra perks),
rapid fire is like an assault rifle? A Carbine with extra firing perks perhaps?

Anything else to know before I start building things?

Rapid fire is more a light MG: multiple shots per shooting attack and can be fired twice in a turn

With the game out in the wild I'd recommend moving discussion of rules, list building etc to the Other Science Fiction Games forum.

I see Insaniak has already started a thread for showing off crews.

Mine arrived over the weekend. Does anyone have a list of that which was included as final?

I seem to remember some wee beasty was included, as well as some gnolls. Were these in fact included? I thought the OP was being updated, but apparently I misremembered!
