Sauce: http://deadline.com/2015/03/transformers-age-of-extinction-profit-box-office-2014-1201391233/

THE BOTTOM LINE: Transformers: Age Of Extinction turned in a $245M domestic gross, did $545M foreign and another $301M China (Paramount kept $75 million of that), for a total of $1.09 billion. That is just short of the last installment, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, which grossed $1.12B to become the first Transformers to crack the billion dollar gross mark.

American Sniper came in at #2 with Lego Movie at #3 and Mockingjay at #4.

Interesting.

I recall seeing stats for the UK last year a while back, and while it made the top 10, I am pretty sure it fell behind Hobbit, GotG and LEGO, maybe X-men as well.

Still, high figures for a pretty crap film (and I must say I really like TF3), which was certainly the most disappointing thing I saw last year. I figured it would build on the good parts of Dark of the Moon (the action, the actual Transformer's characters), and lose the parts that let the film down (Looking at you, Mr Lebouef), but instead we get less plot, a non-ending and a Final Battle that went on about 30 minutes too long.

There was a Transformers 4?

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

My main issues with it were that it was trying to be two movies at once(the origin tale w/ Lockdown and the creation of Galvatron/return of Megatron) and, consequentially, the running time. Either story could have been decent, if not alright, but combined, they became a mixed bag of "WTF THIS MOVIE JUST KEEPS GOING AND GETTING WORSE EVERY MOMENT, WHEN THE FETH ARE DINOBOTS COMING".

Also, the remaining Autobots were just outright dicks and utterly detestable characters.

I loved Hound though.
Running time wasn't an issue. I watched it in between studying just last week to relax. it was bits and pieces.
My issue was the human characters again. I mean, the girl and guy sucked. But every other human char was awesome.

Dinobots were the only good part. The rest was drawn out storyline that wasn't even any good. All the characters I gave the slightest feth about had already gone in some way. Terribad film that epitomises the milking of a cash cow.

Erm, right at the end, to show up and do... err, something important that may or may not have actually relevant beyond 'Wow, Dinobots!' (a chorus followed by 'wow, wasted potential for Dinobots), and certainly wasn't in character, as that would of course require them to have had character beyond (see: "Wow, Dinobots)

I agree with your assessment, though; there were some ideas that would have made decent films, but trying to cram Transformer Bounty Hunters, Origin of the Transformers, Dinobots, Is-he-isn't-he-Megarton and a soap opera's worth of superflous human 'drama' into one film just ended in disaster.

Transformers 4 beat Guardians, Hobbit and X-Men? What idiots contributed to this heresy?

Well, okay, I could see it beating GotG, simply because of the popularity of the names, but X-Men and Hobbit? No. Fething. Way. And the popularity of American Sniper and Hunger Games shouldn't have been beaten either. I call bs.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

In which character? The Dinobot characterizations are incredibly non-consistent. G1 Sunbow had them as dumb brutes, G1 Marvel had them as smarter(hell, Grimlock led the Autobots and discovered the cure for the Action Master problem), and Dreamwave, IDW, and Aligned have them as intelligent soldiers who love to fight and who are aligned with the Autbots but not really part of them with Aligned only having intelligence issues in relation to being in their incongruous bodies and alt modes(and even then, really only Grimlock has that issue). Oh, and IDW has changed Grimlock into a brain-dead 'Bot acting on instinct because Overlord drove him out of his mind. They're not really out of character because there is no ONE character for them to be in unlike most other characters.

I'm not familliar enough with the history of Transformers to know, really, but the point I was making is that they seemed only to be in the film for Wow factor, their characterisation being limited to 'grumy old bastards'. They weren't given a chance to develop as characters beyond becoming grumpy at different people, and just struck me as a hugely wasted opportunity.

But then, so was killing off most of the Autobot cast from the last film that were actually pretty cool (Q, the Wreckers, the Samurai-type one whose name escapes me, and Ratchet, of course) and replacing them with 1-dimensional cariacatures.

I know.

I'm in general displeased with the affect the Chinese market has had on American cinema. I don't mind the minor stuff - the wedging of Chinese pop stars into major roles (ultimately there is only so much a pop star can act regardless of nationality), adding Shanghai and Beijing and Hong Kong as set locations (some of those places are beautiful and offer unique landscapes)... my problem is that it appears the average Chinese moviegoer is more interested in spectacle than in good filmmaking (by my standards). This was already a problem previously but I think it's been exacerbated in recent years.

The main reason is because you don't have to subtitle an explosion. Action movies do well internationally since the native "language" they are made in is gun fire and kung-fu punches. Those are easy to translate for foreign audiences. Clever dialogue, layered characters, complex plots and the like are harder to work with when translating.

No argument here on either point.

I think I'd agree with that. Cap 2 is in the running for the best solo MCU film (rivalled only by Thor 2 and possibly IM1), and GotG was just the most fun/ entertaining and rewatchable thing I've seen since... well, Avengers!

To round out my top 5 I'd pick XM: DoFP as the cast/writing were excellent, The Battle of the Five Armies as it was every bit as awesome as expected, and , Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, largely due to the brilliance of Andy Serkis in the lead.

Honourable mention to Fury, because that was without a doubt the best war film since Saving Pvt Ryan, and I also seem to be in a minority in loving Amazing Spiderman 2.

I think it's safe to say that, TF4 aside, 2014 was a damn good year for films!

Guardians was the most entertaining movie I've seen in a long time. Was last year's X-Man movie "Wolverine in Time"? If so, then it was OKish. The Hobbit was 2.5 hours of bs.

Depends on if the final release leaves Anna Faris pinned against a wall or ceiling.

I agree with this, I liked the movie.

Mainly because it didn't have Shia LaBeouf yelling 'Optimus!' or 'Bumblebee!' every five seconds. Marky Mark's character was a lot more sympathetic.
