A friend posed an interesting scenario to me today. If you were offered a 2000 point army for AU$350 (US$250, €220) would you take the offer? The scenario was the units were glued, but not painted. Buying cheap to flip them on eBay is not a part of the hypothetical For reference against standard Australian prices, a Space Marine Battleforce (Captain, 10-man Tactical, Dread) is AU$145.

He felt that it was too good a bargain to pass up, no matter which faction. I felt it would depend on the faction (there are some I would not want to own for any amount of discount), and in the case of Nids it would depend on the models (I already have way too many Stealers and have enough Gaunts). I found it personally interesting which factions I would/would not take the offer with. What about you: how would you react to this offer?

Depends on the army.
If it was one I wanted, then yes, I'd grab it. Unpainted is fine.
Glued is fine (I have a knife and know how to debond superglues.).

If it was an army I wasn't willing to touch with someone else's bargepole, then I'd pass on it, regardless of how good the bargain was.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Need pictures.

I was working on putting together a guide on how to get models cheap without heavy conversions.

The best I can come up with for CSM was Marines upgraded to Havocs carrying lascannons or autocannons. The list I made was 3 CADS with minimal hq and troops with 3 slots of havocs. So 3 hq, 6 troops, 9 heavy slots. There was a total of 4 squads of lascannon havocs, and 5 squads of autocannon havocs. Which means 16 lascannons and 20 autocannons. all clocking in at 1850 for $245.

Let me ask you? can that 2000pts of Marines survive 40 AC shots (20x2) and 16 lascannons? Marines have an advantage of sv3, but the ap4 on the AC would rip tau, guards, nids etc...

I wouldn't take the offer myself. I need to have passion for an army otherwise I won't bother working on it. The sole exception is Necrons. All I'd need to do is spray paint them gun metal and wash black.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.

Nope.

And this is consistent with where my wallet has actually opened. Over the past few years, roughly 80% of my gaming spend has gone into Kickstarters, and the last few are delivering in the next few months. I haven't spent nearly as much on GW as I used to, mostly because I already have massive GW armies.

If anything, I should be selling some of my GW stuff, clearing space in the closet.

But if it's an army that I'm really interested in, I might bite. 2,000 pts of Titans for $250 USD would get my attention. Definitely, if it were 2,000 pts of FW (e.g. DKoK, Elysians, Chaos Dorfs or 3 Warhound Titans).

I bought my friends old Necron army for around 120USD.
It was somewhere south of 2000+ points, unpainted, with several old or broken models.
It was the first tabletop anything I had ever bought though.

- 10000+ pts
Imperial Knights- 5 Standard Knights / 3 Cerastus Knights
Officio Assassinorum - 4 Assassins
CSM - 500pts? Maybe? Its from the Officio Assassinorum box so I'm pretty sure its not enough to run in a CAD
Vampire Lords- I have no idea I bought it like two days before I left country and they're still in storage so I'll have to see when I get back.]

I’d have to really want the army for that price. It’s not that the deal isn’t that good, but my limited hobby budget. Dropping that kind of cash in one lump is basically saying “this is my one hobby purchase for the year” Am I willing to pull all my other ongoing projects on hold, just to pick up a bargain? Picking it up just to add to the pile of shame is not worth it.

Something with a similar discount, but a lower price, would be harder for me to pass up.

So about £160? Big, but I've spent more on less so it's a good deal to me!

For me I'm kinda like you if buying to resell is taken out of the equation (hopefully selling off a couple irrelevant things isn't, though), if it's an army I want then hell yeah!
Otherwise... Even if it's a bargain, that's a lot of money to blow and if it's on something I don't want then I'd only maybe buy it to resell (which you took out of the equation)...
I can say some stuff though.

I'd definitely buy if it was:
Dark Angels (caveat: Might have some redundant stuff but most things I'd be willing to have more of)
Grey Knights
Vanilla Space Marines (caveat: I want Black Templars so that might mean selling figures of things irrelevant to BTs. Except Librarians, maybe. Those could go in my Dark Angels)
Imperial Guard
Maybe Tau/Farsight Enclaves
Imperial Knights

I wouldn't bother except to resell:
Eldar
Dark Eldar
Anything Chaos
Tyranids (caveat: except maybe gifts for a friend. Wouldn't spend £160 for that but might point him to the auction or if reselling was back in I might put some aside as gifts for him and/or let him have first pick)
Necrons

Maybe if I could convert:
Blood Angels
Space Wolves

Didn't include Forge World exclusives and anything else is debatable or I forgot.

Don't believe me? It's all in the numbers.
Number 1: That's terror.
Number 2: That's terror.
Dark Angels/Angels of Vengeance combo - ???? - Input wanted!

I'd have to know what's in the army, not every model but I'd at least want to ask what the army is and then see if they have at least a few units I'm interested in. If they do, then sure, I see no reason not to as glue isn't that hard to break off as needed.

Heck, at that price I might just snatch it up anyway because it's pretty solid value. Worst case scenario I just leave it on a shelf somewhere for later or for friends to play with if they want to try out the army.

I'll pluck you like a flower.

While not bad. It depends on how they costed the 2k points.

adding a bunch of junk equipment to make it look bigger and stuff like that.

2k worth of rough riders is still a bunch of rough riders

If it was a decent set up army with all flash cut, clean assembly then i would probably buy it.
