The global catch of fish and seafood is falling at three times the rate reported by the United Nations and urgently needs to be slowed to avoid a crash, reports Christopher Pala. The finding comes in a new study for Nature which quantifies the huge illegal industrial fish pillaging taking place around the world, together with artisanal catches, which in 2010 added over 50% to UN estimates.

Hard to believe- there are sooo many fish. Also I had no idea how much fisheries were don't bypass the language filter like this. Reds8n poor nations after having already exhausted the resources of their own countries.

Here is an interesting piece from New Scientist.

The TLR is that the once massive Grand Banks cod fishery crashed in the 1980s. The government closed the fishery in 1992, and it is now beginning to show good signs of recovery. Scientists predicted the crash, saying it was due to overfishing (not seals, etc) and the solution was to stop fishing.

We are running out of fish because Megalodon has reawakened and he. Is. Pissed.

That took me a second.

But then I realized it and started laughing like an idiot.

Now what are we going to replace fish with? People?

Probably has to do with the age long practices of just casting a net, pulling fish out, and assuming that bounty is infinite.

Compared to managing a herd of cows/sows/ect that you know needs to be properly culled without destroying its future.

Responsible, sustainable fisheries will have to become a thing now too.

It's industrial fishing, trawlers, huge purse seine nets and the like, guided by sonar shoal detectors. It's like strip mining the ocean, or digging masive fire breaks through the ecology.

IIRC, farm raised fish, such as salmon have massively higher amounts of "bad" things in them, when compared to their wild caught counter-parts.

This is because, obviously fish farms are run for profit, and in US business, we know that profit is king, consequences of anything else be damned.

All that picture is telling me is how bland the fish counter at the grocery store would be if we used fewer, smaller boats.

In general farmed fish have a much higher fat content than you would expect to see in wild caught. Because of this 200 calories of farmed salmon, for example, will have significantly less protein (what most people are after when they're pushing seafood) than 200 calories of wild caught.

There are also some significant differences in other respects, mostly regarding mineral mineral content, but those are only relevant to people with specific health conditions, pregnant women, the elderly, and young children.

IIRC, for old people it's supposed to be around once a week... I think it was the same for kids?? But kids should be above a certain age, to mitigate the risks of potential food allergies.

As for pregnant women... I don't know, I've never been pregnant myself, so I've never had a doctor talk to me about eating fish

I recall an interview with the founders of Greenpeace talking about how the organization had moved away from science to feelings and bs (essentially). They seemed less than happy.

Yeah they say the same about red meat, bread and other starchy products and pretty much every food you could think of. Not to mention that there is many saying that fish is super healthy and everyone should eat more fish. Food advice like that generally tends to be a load of unscientific bs. As long as you eat in moderation and have a varied diet, there are no "bad foods". I know hundreds of people who have eaten fish while being a kid, pregnant or old, and none of them has ever gotten any negative effects of it.

Pregis are not suppose to eat fish because the average salmon has as much merciury in it as a anal tep taker. Also the body cant get rid of it ever it just builds up over a life time. Kinda like xrays.

But living on the coast I can tell you the size of fish has changed big time. The average smelt is about half the size as they where ten years ago. And infested with worms.

Fixed my mistake with mag to merc.

The only thing I recall about pregnant women not eating fish was to avoid ones that might have mercury in them. It is a cool planet but apparently pieces of it aren't healthy for a fetus. That and soft cheeses.

Never heard the red meat and bread thing before.

I've read that a couple times now, and only thing I can think of is in general moderation, not specifically to pregnant women.... My wife having been pregnant twice, her doctors (one german, and later one american) were always talking about eating red meats to combat low iron issues.

It has also started outsourcing its canvassing operation, which used to be pretty employee friendly as canvassing operations go, to the Fund for the Public Interest; an organization noted for being extremely exploitative*. My friends that still work there have even told me that their in-house activists are now being required to pay rent in order stay in a Greenpeace facility, something which is a job prerequisite. Basically Greenpeace has taken everything that was positive about the organization, especially regarding internal practices, and thrown it out the window.

I believe that the proscription is for pregnant women handling raw red meat, which can give them similar parasites as cat scratches that affect a developing fetus. My sister in law blames her doctor not telling her to avoid handling raw meat for the parasite that apparently left her son blind in one eye.
