For me, it depends on the locale. Like in City of Heroes/Villains, the people there are really nice, hell, many of them are roleplayers whom are even nicer on average than gamers.
But in a place like... say... CrimeCraft... yeesh. They practically assume that female avatars must be prostitutes... game design encourages this even, in many ways.

I have never played the above games. They any good?
I have noticed that though. On a few forums it's moderated enough for your to be able to get away with it without to much unwanted nerd attention. But when I used to played runescape a female avy would be followed by a chain of about five male avy's offering money for 'pics' or asking to be their gf.
The biggest problem is most of these people wouldn't know what to do with a woman if they had one in front of them completlely naked holding up a diagram and a giant directional arrow. So they 'talk' to them in the only way they know how. The internet.
