Russia bans Durex condoms over holes in paperwork

Russia has banned the widely popular Durex condoms over a bureaucratic issue regarding the products' registration, the country's health care watchdog said Thursday.
"They (Durex condoms) are not registered in the proper manner," Russian news agencies quoted Mikhail Murashko, the head of Russia's federal health care watchdog, as saying. "The company must observe the law."
Murashko added that the condoms could be back on the market only if their producer, British household goods firm Reckitt Benckiser fulfils the appropriate registration procedures.
Durex is a leading condom brand on the Russian market and accounts for one quarter of condoms sale in the country, local media has reported.
Murashko said there would be no shortage of condoms in the country because Durex is "only one of the brands" among the more than 60 available in Russia.
Russia has struggled to control sexually transmitted diseases and infections, with the total number of registered HIV cases in the country exceeded one million in late 2015.
The government's HIV/AIDS prevention policy focuses on treatment while neglecting prevention drives such as sex education in schools, with the number of people infected with the virus soaring as a result, experts say.
A public health campaign in Moscow last year urged people to be faithful to their partners, rather than promoting condom use.

Durex definitely don't want to get known for holes in their work.

Banning condoms?! That's a pretty solid punishment. I hope they don't have a hard time getting back in.
Think this could spawn other problems of illegitimacy for them in other countries?

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Wow! People and companies in Russia have to obey laws? Really?
Mate, seriously?

But yeah. This kind of thing happens a lot. Russian bureacracy is very strict and notorious for being overly complicated up to the point of being nearly incomprehensible (especially for foreigners). It is also very time consuming because it seems there exists forms for every single little thing people could have possibly made up a form for. They are also very stern in checking every thing. Every little detail has to be exactly right or you will get problems (unless you make a little 'donation' to the right people of course).
It is an effective barrier to deter those pesky foreigners plotting to take over and corrupt Russia with their businesses, which is probably an important reason why the bureacracy has not been improved since Soviet days.

Somewhere in south-central England.

In this case it's just Putin getting in a huff because the Russian athletics team has been kicked out of the Olympics for a history of massive doping, Lord Coe (Head of Athletics) is English and so is Durex.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

This problem is a results of 'religious supremacy' in politics. The new Russia is actually returning to the ways of the Tsardom, especially when Putin declared that the Eastern Orthodoxy is state religion (and strongly adhered to the policy to mix its teachings with the law... instead of being more 'scientific' towards state policy (and thus. the country needs to secularize)

^ Yet I don't think Communism will ever be reconsidered as a core theme the next gen revolutionary will use. but i think there may be a big revolutions there anyway.
Wait did Russia use 'Single internet gateway'? here in Thailand the evil Junta repeatedly proposed it (and facing the public discontents over this).

Such thing was proposed but then highly criticised. Instead, it now block access to certain sites through ISPs (which is easily avoided but makes internet decline). But now they proposed really crazy things: phone operator should record and keep EVERY CALLs for 6 month, expences will be higher than telephone companies earn. Also ban of HTTPS. Press on bloggers and news sites. Every data should be open for police (and for hackers), encyptions should be banned. Wooooh... absolutely incompetent MPs who sit and eat up our income and draw a stupid laws are destroying the country

Yeah, the hole has been left gaping wide open. And unfortenately the Church might just plunge right in just so they can prevent the use of condoms, because for some reason churches don't like condoms. Hell, I would not be surprised at all if the Church is behind the banning of Durex in the first place.

I like the Orthodox Church, it is part of what makes Russia into Russia and it is good to see it recover from atheist persecutions. But it must not go too far. Russia must not abandon all of the social advances the Bolsheviks made and go back to the days of feudalism.

 Freakazoitt wrote:

Unfortenately, I do not see that happen anytime in near future. There is too many Russians who support such laws, and media brainwashing and fearmongering isn't doing any good either. For a revolution there needs to be a leader with strong ideals and support of the people, like Lenin. In modern Russia, there is no such leader.

Considering how religious and conservative Russia tends to be I wonder how the people feel about this.
