In another thread the subject of how good is the In n Out burger chain, Yes they're this good:

http://katv.com/news/offbeat/police-driver-stops-at-in-n-out-drive-thru-during-pursuit

A bizarre chase in Arizona sent a man to jail. Luckily for him, he didn't go hungry.

Police in Phoenix said they were chasing a man for Wednesday night when the suspect took the time to stop at a fast food restaurant.

According to the Associated Press, Josh Adkins, age 35, had an outstanding warrant. Both a helicopter and several patrol cars were tracking the suspect when they saw he pulled over into the drive-through of an In-N-Out restaurant to order food.

After getting his order, Adkins drove away, stopped at a residential area and ran from the truck.

Adkins was arrested for suspicion of unlawful flight from law enforcement.

As a Californian who has eaten at In-n-Out maybe a dozen times, I don't get it. What's the big deal? Fast food burgers taste like fast food.

When I was out west, I was working with a lot of college kids and others fresh out of highschool.

When I wasn't impressed about In N Out the reaction I got was worse than if I had implied that I had had a particularly eventful night of love making with their parents.

Then again that group was pretty weird in general, maybe it was just them

Its a quality-for-price thing. There are plenty of burgers better than In-n-Out, plenty of burgers cheaper than In-n-Out, but its very hard to find something that's more bang for your buck. Some of the really good items aren't actually on the menu either (order a burger/fries 'animal style' and you'll know what I mean). That they have always started fresh-hires, even random high school students, above minimum wage (which is $10.50 here right now) also earns points with me.

As for five guys, personally I find their burgers to be more or less on-par with In-n-Out but cost more. But what really tells the story is that Five Guys will never move into a lot near an In-n-Out.

In-N-Out also has animal style which many people I know get basically always which 5 guys doesn't have typically. I eat both In-N-Out and 5 guys, 5 guys almost always by delivery because In-N-Out does not allow delivery services.

Indeed. If I were going to jail In and Out would not be my last burger. They're greasy garbage.

In-n-out is great, people just have to realize what it is. It's a top of the "drive through" burger joints, not the most amazing burgers ever. When you start getting into places like 5Guys or The Habit or other places, theyre serving a different schtick. 5 guys is great...but they're more expensive and dont have a drive through.

For a classic southern california "drive through", its hard to beat in-n-out (however partial I may be to Carls Jr). For that, they're amazing, and if you look at the way they advertise themselves, thats what theyre going after. There are better burgers, and a lot of innout hype has been taken overboard, but as far as a cruising meal goes, theyre great.

Unless you desire to eat actual food, in which case, its better to eat your own tongue.

Do they still have 25C burgers? I used to eat a dozen of them at a time.

Protein Style
your favorite burger wrapped in hand-leafed lettuce instead of a bun

Grilled Cheese

Del Taco isnt food, I wouldn't let my dog eat that

No one eats at Del Taco, that stuff is so horrible they got kicked off the navy base. For real mexican food go to any hole in the wall mexican joint run by mom & pop. If you think california isn't known for great food, it's because you're making poor life choices like Del taco.

Like others have said, in n out is great for fast food, If you have the time though check out Hodad’s in san diego, and see if you can beat the burger eating challenge It was even featured on the food channel once, I forget the name of the show, but the one with the guy who actually tried to beat all the places with food challenges.

There's a lot of great restaurants in CA. They just aren't fast food.

That said, La Burrita in the Bay Area used to make the best burritos on Earth.

They may be gone. They were a similar chain to In and Out except they sold cheapass burgers where white people feared to tread.
Literally a quarter a burger. Back when a quarter meant something sonny!

Seriously, In and Outs are ok, but they are a cultlike thing for Californians. Non-Californians (especially on bordering states) don't understand it and can be downright hostile as it represents an intrusion of the California lifestyle into their region. Carls doesn't get near the cult following (or hostility).

Often different regions will have a local favorite that others can't quite understand whats the big deal. I guess here is would be Whataburger-which seems to be like a loyalty oath for Aggies or something. Dairy Queen would be similar-but I dated crazy at one and will never get within rifle shot just to be safe.

In Austin we like this for burgers. The big difference is 1) pretty peppery burgers; 2) excellent real ice cream shakes.

Anecdotal, but I hear all the time about non-Californians going to in n out as soon as they visit, or driving 30-45 mins to get to one. At any rate, no need to worry too much about expansion because they don't open a new location more than one days drive from one of their production plants.

You stopped reading my post halfway through. I agreed about hole in the wall Mexican restaurants. But these aren't known outside their local areas, and definitely not by the Hollywood gringos.

I will throw in roach coaches. When I worked intown making fan blades we'd eat tacos etc at the roach coaches that came up. Man that was some good food.

I had a Carl's Jr Big Western when I was out in CA and it was one of the best fast food burgers I've ever had, but when I've had stuff at Hardy's which is the same chain it was nowhere near the same. I don't know if it was a case of after plane flight hunger level influencing the experience or if there's some other difference but the one time i tried Carl's Jr it was awesome and every trip to Hardy's has been nothing but disappointment.
