Sort of a reverse of the guilty secret movies thread. I'm gonna start with a couple and may add more later.

Napoleon dynamite, Avatar and the star wars movies.

Star wars is good but i don't think it's great. For it to have such rabid fans that complain over han shooting first and little minor things is just so ridiculous.

Avatar was more a pretty movie that won't be pretty by the time tech improves. Its story will stay hollow.

Napoleon dynamite was just unfunny and mostly not that good as a movie. I don't know how it got the popularity it got when it was released.

Spider-Man Homecoming. Film was atrocious, yet it got amazing reviews.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I might get hate for this, but most of Christopher Nolans work strikes me as over rated. I didn't care for the batman movies (but then again I can't stand christian bale, or superheroes in general). Memento felt underwhelming after seeing it. I can't really remember Inception all that well. Intersteller was one that I actually do remember liking more than his others.

A Song of Ice and Fire books. The writing is horrible. The story is still great but, oh god, so unfocused.

Avengers 2. It was just a bad movie, everything felt forced.

Walking Dead TV series. I don't know why they felt they had to alter a lot of characters so they behaved like retards, but it seems to sell for whatever reason.

I find the term "overrated" to be exceedingly overrated, particularly as it implies that other people are somehow wrong for liking something you don't.

I'm not a big fan of most horror, as I can't stand jump scares and other explicitly visual effects. I've got his paranoid idea things like that may genuinely give me a heart attack, so I don't really understand how other people like it so much. I much prefer the Lovecraftian style of horror that just makes you think too much and results in a strong desire to not go to sleep.

I think i agree on harry potter. It was good when i was young but like Pokemon i grew out of it. I mean the whole wizard world was interesting but it was very much a children's story. Probably didn't deserve that level of acclaim it got. The writing was pretty weak. I suppose i understand the love children had of it but not adults.

The Arrow TV show. I don't get why everybody loved/loves it so much. Every episode except the season finale where they win because plot device ends the same. And the guy who plays the Arrow is almost as wooden as Keanu Reeves.

Donnie Darko.

Man, what an absolute mess of a movie. Plot, plot, plot, plot BUT NOT REALLY BECAUSE REASONS!!!! Lololololololol.

Just an awful, awful film. Tries to be clever, isn't smart enough to pull it off.

Musically?

Oasis. They were rubbish. Liam can't sing, none of them are original. Their catalogue is derivative. Had it not been for the tabloids latching onto Liam being a goon, they'd have sunk without trace. Gimme Pulp any day.

Kasabian.

There's another load of old tosh inexplicably well regarded. Why? Seriously.

Metallica.

They ain't Iron Maiden. They ain't Judas Priest. They ain't even Twisted Sister. Not even close.

Rick and Morty.

Controversial I know. Have tried to get into it, but I can't get past the god awful dialogue. Rick just belches between words, and Morty just frets frets frets. Strikes me as lazily written to pad out a 5 minute short to whatever the run time actually is. I know others love it, but I just can't see why.

Wow someone else doesn't like Saint Nolans work -

Perosnally - and thats what this thread it about - subjective opinions - I find his films lack any kind of characterisation in favour of a usually very poorly executed "big idea" which in turn is drawn out over a massively overlong run time. Inception is a prime exmaple of this and cotiuies his inability of have any decent female characters.

Another apparently sacred film I dislike is Scream

I find the so called irony heavy handed and its bascially still the same old torture porn sold as knowing and clever -I see it as neither - the makers certainly seem to take great pleasure in the extended scenes of female torture - especially in the scene where Drew Barrrymore is killed in a deeply unpleasent way - ohhh how ironic that is .

Not necessarily because his stuff is bad, but because he is so everywhere. It's a meme that won't go away. And so many people see a Deadpool costume/cosplay as carte blanche to act like a jackass.

I'm not sure I would say Scream was overrated, but mostly because I don't know how it is currently rated. It was an important step in pop culture that paved the way for the likes of Joss Whedon and a lot of modern genre-aware films, but everything that made Scream goo has been done better since.

Kind of like Bladerunner. Important because of impact, even if the film itself hasn't aged so well for modern audiences.

Thing about Big Bang its more or less tuned out the geek, bar very low hanging references to morph into stock US sitcom to pull in the numbers, which is fine as nerd culture generally moves too fast for regular TV anyhoo, plus like many US sitcoms its gone on too long

I'd also posit there's a vast difference between US and UK sitcoms in general as the US its all slick shiny happy people firing off gags to a comedy metronome whereas UK ones are usually 'losers' enduring the horror of their inescapable circumstances

The humor in Big Bang theory (when it was watchable) basically boiled down to laughing with (and often at) people with Spectrum behaviors so pronounced they impact quality of life. That's a real bucket of chuckles.

No wonder they morphed it into a stock sitcom.

Exalted! I really like the Dark Knight, but thats about the only Nolan film. Couldn't stand Inception and the only Nolan I've watched since was Dunkirk, which I would have liked much more without the Nolan (three fethed up threads at the same time) style.

Might be a topic for another thread, but yes, that's generally why I prefer comedy from my home country. Sarcastic, self-deprecating, dry wit usually has me laughing more than throwing gags at a wall and seeing which ones hit the canned laughter button.

Also, UK sitcoms tend to know when to stop
