As I understand the rules a unit equipped with pistols could, during shooting phase, shoot their pistols at the unit they are engaged with.
Is it correct?

A pistol may be fired even if you are within 1" of the enemy.

Yeah... it's in the basic core rules, under "Pistols"...

"A model can fire a Pistol even if there are
enemy units within 1" of its own unit, but
it must target the closest enemy unit. In
such circumstances, the model can shoot
its Pistol even if other friendly units are
within 1" of the same enemy unit."

Exactly as the others have answered. I'll just add, because it comes up from time to time, that even though the pistols can be used during the shooting phase, they cannot be used as close assault weapons during the fighting phase.

Indeed. It's so tiresome people keep bringing up a thing easily solved by common sense, that isn't even a problem unless you're being needlessly pedantic, and that everyone plays just fine. So, it isn't an issue. I hope people stop trying to score some weird internet points by bringing it up.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"

The thing about gaming is that you're going to meet needlessly pedantic people, though.

So, by making the individual aware of that thread, they can be forearmed.

Having read it, they will not be caught on the backheel should it ever come up.
