Well I have finally gotten round to posting some background for this warband. I've started with my two favourite characters. The other four are in my head at the moment and I'm struggling to write them up so I'm hoping this will help me pull the words out.

Planetary Governor Daven Kel-Rosber (Deposed)

Planetary Governor Daven Kel-Rosber was once one of Benadice’s most despised enemies. He is now one of her most faithful followers, through no choice of his own. Benadice’s investigation into the Govenor took seven long years, for even she needed proof of his ties to countless crimes. The corpulent Planetary Lord sequestered tithes from the Imperium, dealt illegally in unsanctioned psykers and in both ruinous and xenos artefacts. All these blasphemies were done to increase his vast wealth and excessive lifestyle.

When Benadice deposed him publically and mercilessly, in his throne room it sent a pious ripple through the nobility within the sub sector. Bound in chains Kel-Rosber was removed from his palace and made to walk shamed and naked to the Ecclesiarchy Cathedral. Here he was placed within the vast dungeons, to await his final punishment upon the witch hunter’s pyre. During his incarceration his allies bribed guards to move the governor to another cell, whose occupant was not expecting a death sentence. Unbeknown to the conspirators the guards moved the Governor to a cell whose occupant was awaiting a fate, possibly, worse than death – arco-flagellation.

Part way through the procedure Benadice discovered the switch and interrupted the surgery. Benadice instructed the surgeons to save the governor, as best they could, to face his fate. Upon completion of the surgery the governor was all but a mind wiped combat engine. Deciding that the governor could be put to better use as a penitent and deterrent, to other high powered individuals, Benadice added him to her retinue. Benadice has since used arco-flagellation as a punishment for many nobles found wanting in the eyes of the Emperor.

Mister Coop Eustis

Mister Coop Eustis is the most recent addition to Benadice’s Retinue. Eustis was born on the feral world of Aglea, in the shanties on the steep sides of the ruined Hive Singuli, known locally as The Spike. These communities sprang up round The Spike for claimers to live in relative safety, from the terrors of the wastes and the abnormalii of the spike. The claimers eked out a living reclaiming useful materials from the ruined hive.

His parents lived through the catastrophe that destroyed the hives, seeing it as a punishment from the Emperor, gave Eustis a profoundly religious and pious upbringing. Eustis’ parents had him run errands for the mendicant priest who journeyed from shanty to shanty, preaching the deliverance through the Emperor. Eustis and the priest became connected as pupil and tutor and whenever the priest arrived Eustis would be at the temple door seeking his spiritual guidance. At the age of fourteen Eustis’ father started taking his son on expeditions into The Spike and it became clear that Eustis was a natural for navigating the twisted paths of The Spike. Taking after his father it became clear that the boy could also identify and track the movements of the abnormalii infesting the crippled ruin. His father trained him with the skills to become an excellent claimer and as he met adulthood he was set to make his living as his father before him, fate had differing ideas.

One night the abnormalii raided the settlement, overcoming its defences and pillaging the stores, killing countless folk and crippling the settlement. The next morning the Eustis was found wounded and unconscious, outside the desecrated temples, amongst the corpses of his family and the priest. The survivors took him with them across the wastes to the next shanty, giving remedial treatment to his injuries. After the grief subsided Eustis started working as claimer but was soon promoted to work gang guard, protecting the claimers from roving abnormali. Eustis found further employment with the trackers, who go into the hive and seek out groups of abnormalii to destroy. As the others on the tackers wasted their wages on drink and women, Eustis saved and bought better equipment from the travelling guilders. Soon he split off from the trackers and hired himself out to the highest bidder.

Inquisitor Benadice employed Eustis to guide her into the bowels of The Spike, in search of a rogue psyker, planning on using the denizens of the hive to bring further ruin to Algea. After successfully completing her mission Benadice offered Eustis permanent employment as one of her agents. With his pious upbringing Eustis readily accepted and has found a place in her vanguard.

neil....for the next fantasy element I'm thinking sequinned bikinis right?

I tend to agree, but for me it depends on a couple of things.
40k obviously is all about that gothic theme when it comes to mankind and the whole idea of scientific and cultural deprivation/loss is of course an vague adaption of the middle ages. So you're absolutely right, it's not your everyday sci-fi, more like space knights. (I've heard rumours about GW having an idea for knight-like warriors who fight for mankinds salvation in a crusade...just kidding, ridiculous idea)

But just talking about everybody's favorite topic, the inquisition, for me it widely depends on the ordo and whether your Inq is puritan, thorian, horusian or whatever.
Hereticus has that vibe of medieval witchhunting and the actual spanish inquisition.
Malleus has a lot more of that whole religious vibe and if you can't picture your Inq working in some crypta at the vatican maybe you went wrong somewhere.
Xenos on the other hand should be a lot more like normal sci-fi, especially for an inquisitor who's open to the heretical/benefitial influence of the xenos. If your Inquisitor is the hate-all-xenos-and-I-don't-like-your-face-type I'd go for a Leonardo Da Vinci vibe.
So if fantasy in the future means different stages of human history in space, I agree. If it means medieval stuff in space I beg to differ.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Great background Peter, maybe you should try to provide it right when you present your latest miniature. It really enhances the way I perceive your characters. For example I thought Eustis to be mutated himself, as in mutie tracker, not tracker of muties. And the former govenour got so much cooler, just by knowing what he is.

Just got back from a good day out at Warhammer World attending the Ammo Bunker Bash. Met John Blanche which was fantastic and got to have a looksee at his gorgeous illustrations and models. Had a look at Migsula's Shades Offe Grey Imunda gang too, so different in the flesh... obviously still amazing though. Also got to have a game of Inquisitor. You'll all be happy to know that the Governor cannot hit a thing (read MarcoSkoll's feral worlder) with his chain axe .

I managed to get Factotum Erexaus Parnor finished Friday evening to take him down with me.

My favourite bit is the orange diamond on the fuel tank.

Absolutely shattered and cannot type any more.... off to bed.

Sounds like you had a fantastic day. I'm quite jealous. As for the governor not hitting anything, it's becoming a running gag in my group that my mate's rather thick bodyguard cannot hit anything with anything, barring some sort of cosmic alignment
As for the paint, It's bloody brilliant. He really looks unhinged now. The only thing I can suggest to change is to dull down the red of the purity seals. The bright red strongly opposes the rather muted greens and earthtones of the rest of the model, which I find a little distracting.

EDIT: All the textwork on the book and scrolls looks really good too

Baiyuan - Great background Peter, maybe you should try to provide it right when you present your latest miniature. It really enhances the way I perceive your characters. For example I thought Eustis to be mutated himself, as in mutie tracker, not tracker of muties. And the former govenour got so much cooler, just by knowing what he is. I agree with you but the models are ready before the background is written. I'll see if I can have it all finished and posted with the Inquisitor though. The Governor might be getting a bit of a re write though and instead of partial arco flag he might be suffering from Death Masking. It was mentioned somewhere or other about Eccliesiarchy punishments and Mol suggested it and I really like the idea.

prime12357 - Oh it really was good day. I really don't want the Governor to be a joke though. Admittedly he did go up again a character with a high WS and a better reach weapon.

The seals are the same colour as the rest of the groups, which ties they all together. If they are too bright above I will blame photographing red.

Rogue Wolves - Cheers

Ghostflame - Red Hair does not = crazy. Thanks bud.

ishkatar - Ah he is not so funky.

Great job the paint scheme has pulled him together and the diamond is great I can see why people are thinking ginger but the dark hair works well IMO

The purity seals look a little bright compared to the rest of the pallet, however it could just be the camera light

However I like the brightness it shows a kind of respect for his achievements, a sense of pride he still holds within his displaced unbalanced mind

Peter, I really like the background you've written for these fellows. Baiyaun is right, it really adds a lot to getting a feel for the character. I'm eagerly awaiting the stories for the rest of your pieces.

Oh, and you along with the rest of the =I=munda nuts around here are making it real hard on a guy trying to rebuild a 40k army. I see work like this and just want to rush back to work a Necro gang.

Very good paintjob as usual!
Lots of colors, but still somehow not too busy.
Color choice for his clothes and armor is spot on and really translates the character's background into the flesh.
Interesting color for the gun, daring, but it looks the part.
I'm not that fond of his skintone though. Considering what subtle effects you apply to skin lately, there is a chance it's the photography's fault, but his face looks a bit boring. I would have liked his face more with a slight blush. For me a more vital look would have added to the simpleton vibe. Or go the other direction and give him proper eyerings.

Neil - Seeing his collection of illustrations in the flesh was something else. I've seen them on gothic punk and they are cool. Seeing them up close was so much better.

LDD - Cheers I love that diamond. It was definitely a moment. I've just checked again and they are definitely the same colour as everyone else.

Moltar - I will try. The next month is all about terrain though.

Cadaver - Hey Dude. I guess I'll get that feeling when I start my Guard Army later this year or early next year. Yes a Guard army from a guy who has painted 5 models in the last 8 months! Actually now that I've stopped bullying Björn about finishing his pimped wizard...and I really liked the WIPs I saw of yours...finish her bitch I'm not really kidding but didn't want you getting offended

Gerner - Maybe next year. It was definitely a good day out. Though not enough time and too much to do. I wanted the gun to have a utilitarian look. The grey also broke up the browns. Since he isn't issued equipment in the same way as say a guard the flamer and the auto just had to be different colours.

dsteingass - It really was.

Baiyuan - Cheers buddy. I was so worried about the colours and it really didn't work until the edging to the shoulder cloak thingy was painted on. As I said before the gun was really to break up the browns. I found the face to be very difficult to paint but it looks good enough. The eyes have no lids which was very odd. The colour fits the other all theme but I think a couple of very thin blue glazes under the eyes might help. I didn't want to go for a blush as it doesn't fit into my mind image.

HF - Hey man. your feeling was right II play Inq28 with these guys. Cheers about the model and as I was saying to ghostflame this is how I do text:

Text on parchment is very much a tiny brush and NOT using straight black paint. Pure black is too harsh and will "puncture holes" in the model. I use a mix of black and scab red (dark brown) thinned down to a consistency I can work with. Not a wash but on the way there. Then the important bit when writing the text don't make all the words the same length and try not to have spaces all under each other (not as much of a problem purity seals since). Look at this paragraph for example.

Imperial Monkey - The Governor is my favourite too....though Parnor is getting up the board especially after he shot his autogun on full auto for two actions...ah twenty shots that hit nothing.
--------------------
Now under the spoiler is a very WIP shot of the inquisitor. I need to get a Dire Sword for her... to convert into a combi hand flamer!!! I think I'll be removing her arms and replacing them with Dark Eldar ones too. I love her massive 80's shoulder pads but the arms don't seem to be in the right place for her walking.
