100th Drookian Fenriders

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the one hundred.
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the Emperor!” he said.
Into the Eye of Terror
Rode the one hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the one hundred.

Welcome to my very ambitious project log, where I attempt to do something I've been wanting/waiting to do for several years: an Astra Militarum Cavalry company. NO NOT THOSE MECHANISED BOYS, PROPER CAVALRY! Developments in my own painting and modelling skills over the last few years coupled with Forgeworld's incredible Death Korp Death Rider kits has made this ambition an attainable reality.

The Forces
The idea of a Rough Rider Company first came to me when I read the 3rd edition rulebook

From then it took a long time to come back around before I came to the decision what regiment?

Sticking with the Death Korps did not appeal to me, no converting required but, they had the best 40k horses, WFB/Aos horses just don't cut it. From that moment I knew I would be converting Death Riders. I mind mapped up options for what I thought would be great cavalry armies. Vostroyan, Praetorian, and Tallarn all made it to the final four but it was the
Drookian Fen Guard that took it. The Drookian Fen Guard first came to everyones attention with Victoria's golden daemon squad, proudly wearing their kilts, with beautifully freehanded tartan. They portray both the grim dark future, and maintain that real human element to them, something a lot of regiments loose. I understand they are the faceless regiments of the imperial guard but, that is something I really want to show, that human cost aspect.

Primary Goals:

- Extensive (and exclusive) conversions.
- The use of casting
- Green Stuffing icons and insignia.

Inspiration:

Really because I want to share with you where I draw so much of my inspiration

Imperial Armour Taros Campaign - No longer available
Eastern Empire
“DEATH’S HEAD” - 3rd Krieg Tank Division - Titan Hunter Detachment - Best Guard Blog of all time
Pre-heresy Iron Warriors - Love the organisation, layout and attention to detail in this Log
Three Hives Rebellion - Some of the best custom fluff i have ever had the privilege to read
Tau Drop Troops
Sersi's Slaaneshi Themed Daemon Army - My first exposure of using casting to turn great conversions into elaborate units

My Requirements
As you can imagine with a project of this size, a lot is required. It takes Games Workshop years to produce theirs, and they have all their very talented members of staff. I have myself, and hopefully a supportive and encouraging hobby community to drive my along. What I really want to show is the human side of the Imperial Guard.

Resources Intended for Use:

GUIDES:
Tutofig (Can’t find something look here first)
Lenses
Decals
Salt Technique
Pigments
Blue OSL
Green lights
Painting true metallics

HOBBY ACCESSORIES:

AK 088 Worn Effects Acrylic Fluid
Micro Sol
Micro Set

COMPONENTS:
Forgeworld Death Riders
Victoria Miniatures Kilts 1 & 2
Puppetswar Cossack heads

The Basis:

Unlike any other army I have attempted, to create this army has required so much preparation work. A lot of details needed to be decided ahead of time so that expanding the army wouldn't throw up annoying difficulties from rushed planning.

STAGE ONE

The first stage was to create the conversion that could be cast

STAGE TWO

The second stage is to cast the miniature

Spoiler:

The first images I received

STAGE THREE

The third stage is what is usually everyone elses starting point, building some miniatures

Completed Units:

COMING SOON (I HOPE)

What's next:

Well I have a lot of Rough riders to build. I am still waiting on the required number of bases, as well as the brass rod to build them all. Also my drill broke meaning a few days delay there.
Once that is out of the way, I plan to build some tow guns (Inspiration can be found here), as well as a dismounted company command including an engineer on a mechanical horse

Let me know what you think

A very cool start! I love the theme and ambition of this project. Very interested to see what you can come up with for the rest of the army.

Wow, just amazing ... the sheer creative talent is unbelievable!

Ever since Epic 40,000 i myself have thought of a Rough Rider mounted company; i was going to use plastic Warhammer Fantasy Battle horses ... however i never did get around to it.

Yours sir, is truly an amazing sight to behold and i am looking forwards to more!

Your kind words mean a lot. I am glad to hear there is another out there like me that has a thing for cavalry in 40k. I have concerns with WFB horses transitioning to 40k, there aesthetic is a little jarring I feel. I considered it for a long time,on how to rectify it, would have been a lot of work (That is not saying much considering how long this took). The really basic horses work okay with Praetorians, and I think Bretonian horses could work with Vostroyans.

An outstanding, characterful model there. I don't envy you the prospect of free handing tartan on , what, minimum 60+ kilts!

I have over 100 rough rider casts so yeah....a lot! The organisation I am going for has 61 kilts per company, two companies, 122 kilts + different variant for commissars

Wow these look amazing! Your sculpts are great and those casts are beautiful! Did you do the casting yourself? Really looking forward to seeing how this project progresses.

Thank you very much, your kind words are much appreciated.

I do the casting myself

It is kind words from random like minded hoobyists that can sometimes help maintain ones motivation. Considering it has taken me nearly two years to get to this point. Motivation doesnt seem to be the problem

Small update: I have 50 built just waiting on bases, and 25 are waiting on heads to arrive from Puppetswar

Great stuff! I'd love to see a full company of rough riders - they were my introduction to the Warhammer hobby years ago - got to command them in an epic game, loved them ever since.

Update

This is where I am at the moment. Fifty Fenriders have been built, minus heads on 25 of them as I wait on a big order from Puppetswar. The Bigger bases in the middle will be used for my Tow Guns (Heavy Weapons Teams).

Next is the greenstuffing which I know will take a while as well as some more general clean up of the model.

I am also waiting on an order from Victoria Mi that will allow me to convert some of these to be using their rebreathers

I started toying with the idea of a fancier head dress for the mounts of my command squad (I already knew my mounted commissar conversion will). I also already have plans for the actual rider. What do you think?

Daaamn. That's a lot horsies.

What are you plans painting wise?
Also what are you going to do about that mechanical horse you mentioned in the first post? I know GW used to do a mechanical steed for a Fantasy character, but I don't think that's for sale any more.

If you think that is a lot of horses you should see the box of unbuilt ones, as well as the slightly smaller box of horses with no home

I am going to go for a haunted forest basing style so sticking with drab greens and browns. The armour will likely be black. The Kilt will likely be a different shade of green with a spot colour, most likely yellow or red. I also had an idea for a Blanchitsu scheme of browns, brass, and scarlet but, not sure if I can bring myself to do an army that way. Especially as I will be using a lot of scale modelling techniques on the vehicles

I would never use that old GW model for my Engineer on Mechsteed, I have thought about the Wild West Exodus mechanical horse however but, while the scale is not a problem, as the rider would balance it, it would dwarf my Fenrider Command, and I don't intend for it to be a centrepiece. In the end I may just sculpt it

I think it looks like an afterthought that's been slapped on, to be brutally honest. I think it distracts and detracts from your otherwise wonderful modelling.

You know, if there's one thing I've learnt from being in the Army, it's never ignore a pooh-pooh. I knew a Major who got pooh-poohed, made the mistake of ignoring the pooh-pooh. He pooh-poohed it! Fatal error! 'Cause it turned out all along that the soldier who pooh-poohed him had been pooh-poohing a lot of other officers who pooh-poohed their pooh-poohs. In the end, we had to disband the regiment.

I know, I have had time to think on it now. I am just trying to think of ways that doesn't involve more sculpting as I already have so much to do

Dunno how I managed to miss this blog. I’ve seen this on Facebook. Sure I gave it a like there.

Didn’t realise how much of a huge tasking it was. An entirely mounted army will sure to be a head turner especially if your painting is as top notch as your sculpting and casting skills.

There’s nothing like self casting. I did it myself, but since moving to Germany have struggled to get the resin and silicone.

Thank you

I am going to need to up my painting, I definitely consider it behind my sculpting and converting but, I am hope for the challenge

Casting was difficult, especially as I now have a few sets of 10 riders with no home to go to
