A kingdom stands on the brink of destruction, as the vast realm called the Shadow Deep slowly swallows everything in its path. As the army fights to contain the tide of evil creatures teeming up out of the black clouds, the kingdom’s best soldiers, the rangers, must venture down into the shadows to gather information, rescue prisoners, and ambush enemy supply lines. It is a desperate fight against overwhelming odds, but every little victory brings another day of hope.

Rangers of Shadow Deep is solo and co-operative tabletop miniatures game, in which players create their ranger, gather companions, and play through a series of missions in their fight to hold back the darkness. If their rangers survive, they will grow in power and ability, and be sent on more difficult, dangerous and intricate assignments.

This book also includes the first supplement for the game, Burning Light. In this mission, the rangers must venture to ruined convent, searching for an ancient artefact. As they choose what order to explore the ruins, and thus the order in which scenarios are played, they must gather clues to the artefact’s location. But they must be quick, for the longer they remain, the more the forces of the Shadow Deep become aware of their presence.

Looks cool, downloaded it. Still haven't had a chance to play Frostgrave, but since this supports solo play I might actually be able to play it

Hurrah!

Edit: Damnit, I just committed to running three parallel Imperial Assault LotA co-op campaigns at the club. It's going to be next year before I can get a Rangers of Shadow Deep thing going!

I picked this up Friday and have done two skim passes and I'm working on a full read. This looks amazing! My docket is full with Fallout Wasteland Warfare at the moment, but I was planning fantasy stuff afterwards and Rangers of Shadow Deep will definitely be the focus now!

My problem is that my brain took the Missions in the book as examples and keeps churning up half-formed Missions of my own, and I haven't even played the game! That's always a great sign.

That cover art is gorgeous. Really atmospheric. I'll definitely be picking this up soon.

Picked this up Friday and read it over the weekend. Great stuff. Started painting some bad guys today and gonna give it some playtime this weekend.

Check out my Deadzone/40k/necromunda blog here!

Picked this up last week. Had already painted my Ranger and most of his group (Tracker and Trainee Ranger need to be finished) and most of the enemies for the first mission.

Enemies for mission 2 are purchased, constructed and ready for priming. I'm not the quickest painter and work very busy at the moment so hopefully will be ready to play towards the end of the month (pending delivery of all the terrain I needed to buy as have no fantasy at all).

Joe, when will there be a print (or print on demand) version?

He mentions it is being worked on which is great as I too prefer it. Bought the last few Frostgrave books I lacked while I wait

I have been working at a personal print copy on lulu. Seems to be a very reasonable price and I am splitting the book into four smaller books for convenience - the rules, the missions, the bestiary and the expansion campaign (stole this idea from someone else in the Facebook group). Should make it much easier to find the required info on the fly. Was tempted to split the rules into core rules and spells/abilities/ companion but the split isn’t so clearly defined in the book so kept them together.

Needs to be a lot more of these kinds of games on the market.

I'm oldfashioned, so I need to have a printed copy. None of this newfangled digital rulebooks...

So, as soon as this hits the stores as printed copy, I'll buy it. I assume if I can buy Frostgrave books at local store, I can eventually buy this too.

I have the results of the last chamber: You are a horrible person.
That's what it says: A horrible person...
We weren't even testing for that.

Hey Joe, can a Ranger use the Hand of Fate re-roll on the injury table?

This is going through the print on demand route rather than full print run so you will be able to order a print copy online (like you can with the Frostgrave magazine) but it’s unlikely to be stocked in stores.

Print on demand is fine, just let us know when it's available! I'm in the same camp that I prefer having a physical copy.

Got plenty of Ganesha Games' books printed from Lulu, they're nice quality.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

There are tons of them...but it's the public awareness of them. Drive-Thru RPG and Wargames Vault, etc. have...maybe thousands of indie-style games in almost every genre (often of varying quality!). They exist, but without huge model lines or a cult following, they never reach forums, boards or mass appeal.

I'm intrigued by this one (and yes, the art is fething spot on)..but I didn't enjoy Frostgave - a game which has a huge audience. I may try it out though, been looking for a game of this type for a while. Sadly I have several others purchased/downloaded and none have really scratched the right itch so far. At a glance, I'll definitely be waiting for a print copy, as $20 is way too steep for a PDF file in my opinion.

The $20 is on the higher side but it is almost 200 pages and they have rolled in the first expansion campaign, Burning Light, which make up a quarter of the book.

Yeah, I'd have to see it in action before spending $20 though. I appreciate the length, but that's way too much for a "let's see if I like it purchase" which is how I've done dozens of other PDFs because they were $5-8.

I don't imagine he'll have problems shifting it though because of the Frostgrave fans.

GMG has a let's play, runs through character creation and the first scenario.

I will definitely grab this as a Print on Demand as I want a physical rulebook, and buying the pdf AND having it printed at Office Depot is way too expensive, even for nice spiral bound books.

Watched the GMG playthrough, and it looks idiotically intriguing. I'm thinking a slight retheme for my home games, where instead of the games setting and the Shadow Deep being what the Ramgers are fighting against/exploring, it's Empire agents patrolling the Old World, especially the Great Forest of the Empire.

AegisGrimm, spot on comments, I totally agree and will also auto-buy a physical copy.

Another question for you, Joe:

"The first time a companion is selected, the ranger player may also assign it +3 to any Skill."

Does this mean the first (and only the first) companion I select receives this bonus, or each time a companion is 'created'?

Hand of Fate can only be used during the scenario, not for the injury roll (should have used it when you lost the combat!). Each companion gets one +3 Skill. They only get it the first time you select them for a mission, meaning they don't get another +3 every time they are selected.

Too bad it's not something like Amazon POD.

With the added cost of postage, it's just prohibitively expensive for a softback. :(

That's more intriguing, as I'd want a physical copy - throwing in the PDF with it is always a nice option. What is the quality like with RPGNow prints? Anyone have experience with them? I've seen some great PODs and some awful PODs.
