Be it mistakes, deliberate, acts-of-pet etc... whatever lets share those amusing/silly moments in hobby life.

This thread prompted by the fact I just spent an hour cleaning up four Trygon upper body scything talons and then cut the long part off two of them so I can affix them to give me two upper body arms with double long talons. It went well and I was very pleased with my result. Indeed they looked almost identical

Too identical

Darn it if I hadn't cut up the wrong arm and made two left hand talons at once!

Even worse is that whilst there are loads of bits on ebay for Tyranids, the big scything talons are always super popular and are thus a bit like gold-dust. Thankfully I've found what looks to be a fresh set (as well as few other bits) and got them on order. But darn it if it isn't a pain. Still gives me time to finish the rest of the model.

When I first started magnetizing, I started with Privateer's press Legion models. I got my shiny new WarBeast, carefully marked the mathing magnet ends, attached the magnets and let everything dry after a couple hours.

Yep. Flipped the arms during measuring by mistake.

Another time I accidentally glued the lower forearms on backwards and had to ebay replacement limbs.

I love you ZapAGap for your permanency. I also hate you for your permanency.

When Island of Blood came out, I went to the GW Battlebunker to buy my copy so I could participate in the trading blitz they hosted. I traded away my Skaven for three more griffons, yet something went horribly wrong. I don't know how it's possible, but I ended up with one too many left wings and one too few right wings. One of my griffons will never fly.

In terms of gluing mistakes, I glued my Mantic Strider's arms to the torso before gluing the gun and hands to the arms, resulting in a pose that looks super terrible. I also glued the top half of a WoK stone lion's head to his body so that the mout was closed. Except the mouth was supposed to be open, so now there is a huuuuuuge gap through the mane.

Tossed (literally) a model into acetone. Thankfully I had contacts in so the splash didn’t hit my actual eye. Had to rip the contact out. I’m always super careful after that.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Drinking a can of soda while painting, and without looking instead grabbed a can of soda left over from two weeks ago, which was just pure sugar and sludge at the bottom. Ugh.

Also the exothermic reaction that makes super glue dry will melt polyester carpet with a sizzling sound, and make it smoke. You just have to dump a lot of it.

So I am an unusually clumsy person prone to knocking pretty much anything over within a 1 meter radius around me, so knocking whole trays full of models off the table is nothing too out of the ordinary.

Yet the stupidest things happened at the beginning of my hobbying, where gluing fingers together with those cheap supermarket super glues was a daily event for me.

Also, so many buttscratching marines when I first switched to plastic glue from super glue.

Lum I remember those superglue pains! For me the issue was more that when I was young I never learned about scoring the join areas on metal models, nor the greenstuff trick (of course back then I didn't even know mould lines existed).

The worst wasn't glue getting your fingers stuck together, it was when they got stuck to what you were trying to glue together. So you'd give a little movement of your hands and think the join was solid enough to let go, then your fingers wouldn't let go of the model. Getting them off normally resulted in the join you'd just got to go tacky, breaking and you were back to starting all over again.

Quite a good one was when I wasn't sure if it was too cold out to use a spray can, and I thought I was being smart by testing it on a spare model... then left the spray can outside so that it was definitely too cold when I came to the actual models. Into the paint stripper...

This probably also counts as "daft, silly and stupid". No, I haven't made it too big, it's 54mm scale...

Right after I first got married we lived in a tiny cinder-block apartment. There were literally 1 window in the entire place (back bedroom) that could open. That summer we had a massive heat wave, and our air conditioning system broke down.

It was my day off work, and I was determined to stick to my modeling schedule, despite the heat. So, in order to beat the heat I sat in my tighty-whitey underwear on the floor, zoning out to a DVD of "The Village".

I was holding parts together with my left hand, reached for the superglue (giant bottle) with my right hand, and used my teeth to unscrew the cap.

What I didn't notice was that I didn't just unscrew the cap, I got the entire top of the bottle off. I then dumped about 1 fluid ounce of superglue into my lap.

I ended up gluing my underwear to my leg....among other parts.

>Slipped whilst trimming excessive flash on my 1/144 Karl Gerat and managed to send blood flying 4 feet, the kicker being that the bit I thought was flash was actually part of the kit designed to slot into the chassis and I had just misread the instructions. The plastic was so hard I had only scratched it mind.

When I was first starting out (well, maybe 2 years in) I threw away about $150 worth of minis because I didnt like how I had painted them and wanted to start over. I knew I could strip them, of course, but in those days (early 2000s) the information of how to strip a mini correctly depending on the type of paint and the material of the mini wasnt quite as good as it is today - as a result my early stripping attempts had been dismal failures. I had melted a Tau Devilfish with a cleaning fluid that I had been assured was plastic safe by the internet, and in another case I soaked a batch of minis for 2 weeks in another fluid without any of the paint being even remotely impacted, trying to scrub it off with an old toothbrush resulted in parts breaking off and getting washed down the drain as the fluid had weakened the plastic.

As a result, tossing the minis out and buying new ones seemed wiser than trying to fix the old minis

Also the stabbing reminds me. One time I was working at my desk on a model and had put my scalpel blade down (the older GW one that had the big black handle). I then happened to bump the blade and it slide down and fell off the table and it aimed straight down! Right into my thigh.

That was, to me, probably (and still is) the deepest I've ever been cut. Thankfully it was only as thick as the blade is tall, so not as long a cut, but it was the full blade length. It also didn't bleed much and actually scabbed over fairly quickly all things considered; but it felt really odd for a good while as it healed up. I could feel that sort of "rough" feeling inside the cut.

Oh, yeah, nearly forgot the stabbings...

One time, quite some time ago actually, I was at a friends house for playing. We were 4 people, so 2 were playing, while the others sat by, played video games, just watched, or, in my case, were building something right at the edge of the battlefield where the two others were playing. Mind you, that was before I learned that a good pair of cutters not only made the life when removing parts from a sprue WAY easier, but also quicker. So I started hacking away at a sprue tactical marines with also quite a dull knife.

Weeeell, let`s just say that from that day on, we had a not too small bloodstain on the battlefield. Some weeks later the chaos player actually started gluing some skulls and other stuff there.

We were quite a stupid bunch^^

Tried to prime models outside in like 90%+ humidity.

Bothered with magnetization.

Air brushed an entire Tactical squad with AV's matte varnish without experimenting and learning how to properly apply it first - the models look a little washed out because AV's matte varnish is white and does not dry perfectly clear if applied too heavily.

Was trying to pry an arm of an ork, with an exacto knife, while bracing the model on the edge of the table. The arm popped off and I plunged the knife into my leg and dragged it about two inches before my brain told my hand to stop. Blood, lots of blood. I thought I was pretty bad a** because it did not really hurt before they numbed it for stitches. Later after the numbing stuff should have worn off, still numb. Turns out I cut right through a nerve. I still have a 9" diameter part of my thigh above the knee that has no feeling.

Recently I used kitty litter on some bases, then hit it with the superglue drying stuff. It all turned lime green.

There was that one time when I felt a little woozy but like any good wargamer had my priorities straight, knowing full well that that model wasn't going to build itself. So I put the knife to the model, aimed suspiciously in the direction of my thumb, figured that this was a really stupid idea and then made the cut anyway.. That took off the part I wanted along with half my thumbnail.

Almost two decades ago when I figured converting wasn't enough to get the models I wanted and I didn't really have a clue what green stuff was yet, i grabbed some semi-liquid gap filler I had laying around and sculpted using that. Amazingly it worked if I just sat there long enough and pushed the drooping mass back into shape until it dried.

Spent a month working at a fast food store saving up for a copy of bloodbowl. Thought I'd be cool and spraypaint the foam playing field that came with it. Howled in agony as I watched the thing melt before my eyes.

Had an exothermic reaction with some spray paint when using tin foil protect the surface the model was sitting on. The whole thing went up in flames, and set off the smoke detector/sprinkler in the apartment. My wife was not happy.

Also, left a rattlecan outside too long, the bottom rusted and when I finally went to use it and shook it up, the bottom blew out - and turned my blue jeans green.

The latest one I've done of late though was to put the plugs on an ironstrider on the same side so that I ended up with two left legs. The plugs were superglued on so tight I had to use a dremel to bore through it instead.

It never ends well
