Gotrek vs the Mortal Realms.

What Order army will NOT take Gotrek if this is real? He is INSANE!

He is a risk at 530 points. He is super powerful and can solo units and heroes on his own but he's also slow and thats where the risk comes in.

I don't think he's bent from looking at him due to his cost. Which surprises me, because GW is known for making things like that about 25% too cheap for what they can do, and he's about spot on for his stats and abilities.

agreed, they seem to went a bit overboard, being able to clear 4 greater daemons on its own is just to much

He is Gotrek Gurnisson.

But game wise, defo an opponents agreement affair

He's a quarter of your army and probably isn't benefitting from allegiance abilities. He also has a issue of the enemy just running away from him or feeding him chaff every round. For 520 points he better kick ass, and he does.

I don't know about you but where I am, there is no such thing as an opponents agreement lol. if its official its fair play to be seen on the table.

If Cities can make scary shooting forces with 1480 points he's gonna be a hell of an unpleasant gatekeeper.

And so it begins where the tweets and replies start coming in saying Gotrek should only be 300-350 points max and that he is way overcost lol.

Well, at least his stats are in line with the fluff

But yes, his speed seems a big weakness. Opponents can just kite or throw chaff to make sure he never makes his 520 points back. I suppose that concentrated fire of 1 damage weapons in large numbers can end up wearing him down. 8 wounds isn't huge for his points.

Seems cool though, I now wish I hadn't lost my old Gotrek model.

Also don't forget those "what if" battles were all in close combat, where Gotrek shines through the stats. Nagash loses outright very easily, but then there wasn't 36inches of distance Gotrek had to cover whilst getting blasted with spells before he got into close combat.

Also whilst he's got a lot of saves and means to reduce damage, he's still only got 8 points. Couple that to a movement of 4 inches and concentrated ranged fire can overwhelm him.

Or tangle him up with chaff units, though with hits second attack mechanic he can likely still do a lot of harm and cut down a lot of units pretty fast.

Or deflect with walls, spells and other nasties.

He's tough and for 520points he's well priced I think. Remembering that you can't "place" him anywhere on the table once he's deployed so speeding up his 4 inch movement isn't so simple.

Yea honestly, his points cost means that's a quarter of your army investment. If you take him, you also can take no other allies, which depending on the Order army you take, could be a detriment.

He's slow. 4" move, and a complete inability to transport, displace, or reposition him via spells or other means basically means where he's committed is where he's staying. He'll lock down his 16" area of the board (realistically 13"-14") and do nothing else, if people really wanted to avoid him.

Age of Sigmar is an objective based game where numbers matter. Gotrek is 520 points for 1 model. Is he powerful? Yes. He will almost always delete whatever he touches. But that's a quarter of your opponent's points spent on 1 model. Buy time for a few turns, scoot forward in objective points, and then sit and laugh. Being tabled doesn't guarantee a win, so if you leap ahead in objective points, it doesn't matter what Gotrek kills.

You cannot ally him in at 2k points matched play. He is only available in an Order Allegiance force.

You can ally him no matter his points cost. He bypasses the normal ally limitations. You can even take him in meeting engagements if you want.

So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

You can speed him up. You just can't teleport him right?

You can use no ability that requires him to be "setup on the board" once he is deployed onto the table. And he's not allowed to be put into reserves or such. So he goes down in the deployment phase and from then on cannot leave the table at any point, even to embark on a transport or such. However you can buff, speed up or slow down - you can do all those things to him. Of course the more you focus on him the more you're putting all your eggs into that powerhouse of a basket.

Remembering also that he's not only a massive base and he's not able to fly either - so even the terrain itself could let you bypass him.

He is insane for sure, but thats how it should be. I have no problems with his abilities. In fact. I'd like to see Archaon and Celestant Prime and a few of the other big guys get his survivability.

But if I took him in my regular Fyreslayers army, I'd only have maybe 40 models. A big risk to take him. Potentially fun and devastating if all goes well, but its alot of eggs in one basket.

Given the points cost, I would be shocked to see him show up in many competitive lists. Any sort of ranged-based competitive army would probably eat his lunch anyway. The hard counter for this model seems to be death by 1000 cuts. Seems more like a funny, gimmicky model for non-competitive matchups.

This is a funny set of rules, but I do think it is a bit overboard. Seems to forget the idea that Gortrek winning all these fights is cool because at the start of them, he is an underdog. Making him more powerful than a bunch of Greater Daemons is a bit silly.

But hey, sometimes silly is fun.

I wonder if I could get him as an ally in our just begun Path to Glory game....
1) 500+ pts is nothing when you aren't using pts.
2) I'm not facing any serious amount of shooting.
3) And we're playing on a smaller board. I think it's only 3x3. If I can use him I'll catch something. And whatever it is my opponent won't be regarding it as chaff.
4) I'm already playing Fyreslayers. So another orange haired dwarf, even one on a larger base, won't stand out to my opponents. (they aren't familiar with Fyreslayers. Yet.) I bet I could just park a unit with him mixed in/near about in the center & someone will charge me. Like bating a trap. Of course this is a one time surprise....

I love him! Remember... he is 1/4 of you army that can be stopped with a 60pts unit lol, sure he will kill 1 thing per turn, but thats if he gets there as well.

Throw an endless spell in front of him and watch has his little legs cant walk around it for a turn hahahaha.

Honestly i feel he is very balanced, he is legit very scary and hard to kill (Something dwarfs should be, hard to kill) but at the same time has 2 extreme weakness, movement, and spells to help move. The only thing that can help him move are +1/+2 movement spells/abilities that let him run and charge. 4-6 +D6 movement for AoS is extremely slow.

So, you want to tie up a quarter of your army's points in a single 8-wound model that can be rendered entirely impotent just by walking briskly away from him? Trembling in my boots I am...

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry.

To my knowledge you can only use units and champions that are on the charts for Path to Glory, which items like this guy and Nagash and Archaon etc are not a part of.

Best thing you can do is read the EndTimes books that involve him which details the loss of his Axe and other elements of the story then jump into the new Realmslayer audiobook voiced by Bryan Blessed. After that there's a novella and a short story all before the new audio book and full book this weekend.

Basically, and without spoiling, he's a grumpy, unstoppable force of dwarf stomping through the Mortal Realms.

I've been catching up with the omnibus editions GW has been re-releasing over the past months. The 4th version is out semi-soon which I believe takes the story all the way up to just before the End Times and then I'd expect a 5th volume to cover the End Times period. I was going to read all that before getting Realmslayer, however I got it gifted to me and couldn't resist. Having got over half way through his tale its easy to pick up (esp since the end of the Old World means that Gotrek's start in the Realms is quite a fresh start in many ways)

Any sign that Realmslayer is going to be a normal book any time? I'm not a fan of audio books.

Grumpy unstoppable force does sound like Gotrek. That's basically a summary of everything he does.

Tomorrow - I'm not kidding. Tomorrow there's the audio transcript (book) version of Realmslayer; a new Audiobook (also read by Brian Blessed) and a full novel (his first for AoS) AND the model. Basically tomorrow is Gotrek Day
