Well I've been working an insane amount which allows me to keep my other thread updated with short bursts of hobby but not the time or effort that these titans require. However I was able to get turkey day off and finally decided to put the red down on a basecoated extra head I had. This head had NO filling, sanding, etc done. It was demolded, windows carved then set aside as an extra.
Primed

I then painted it using the Mr Color USAF Thunderbirds red, and applied some chaos black and P3's shinning gold to get an idea of what the colors would look like together.

I guess now I start saving money to buy more paint.

Since the earthquake in Japan Mr Color has become near impossible to get a hold of. I did some searching online and found that Vallejo air Fire Red is an exact match for it. I also ordered Vallejo Insignia red (should be an exact match) then picked up Testors acrylic and enamel insignia red (should also be exact matches) and finally got around to testing them all out.

From left to right
Original color, Acrylic red, enamel red, flat red, fire red
All of these claim to be the same color. Notice any differences?

I then took the time an applied them with a brush to the inside of the test head.

from left to right:
A for the acrylic, M for the mr color, E for the enamel, stripe 1 is the flat red, stripe 2 is the fire red.
Notice any differences for these paints all being the "same color"

Next I applied them to the head "over" the original paint.

In the upper left corner the darker stripe is the enamel. Around the window the slightly flatter looking stuff is the acrylic.
The dark smudge to the left of the "box" is the enamel (2 tests), the dark smudge above the "box" is the fire red, and the dark smudge to the right of the "box" is the flat red.

I'm going to go with the acrylic, and I ordered 20 bottles last night. I'll be testing with adding some semi-gloss medium to it so its not so flat, but other wise its one more step towards completion.

Well this weekend I was also able to prime, sand, and then test out the acrylic paint on some extra titan bits. I've noticed that this paint is VERY thin and runs easily, it also takes FOREVER to dry (which is surprising for a acrylic).

jabbakahut - On these titans I am using Tamiya white primer (in a bottle), on my marines I use Armory Grey (in a spray can), on my assassins I've been using walmart brand black primer (in a spray can), and on my grey knights I use alclad gloss black primer (in a bottle). It depends on the project and the desired outcome. The tamiya is sandable (unlike most of the others) and white is a good base for bright colors like the red.

Just did a little google at work and found this
MODEL MASTER TESTOR ACRYLIC:

Most Model Master and Testor "Acrylic" paints are pre-thinned for airbrushing. Thin paint by adding thinner drop by drop, until your consistency has been achieved.

Air pressure should be approximately 18-20 PSI.

Acrylics will dry to the touch in minutes; they require 24 hours for a full cure.

Thinner: - all Acryl thinners

I never considered airbrushing for the primer, interesting.. I have a couple of the Armory cans, I have yet to use them though. I made the mistake of priming a Star Destroyer in black, I believe it was 7-10 coats of grey to cover it :( But the hope was it would give a dingier color to the ship.

Hello,
I was not stating you should get used to it, just that I have had to. I can feel your pain. It would be nice if they actually had a standard color palatte across all ranges of paint, even with auto paint it is not the same. I have gotten to the point that I will often mix big batches of color, but often I can not use it all before it goes bad, can you go to a auto store and get some premixed? I am not sure on your cost structure on this, but when I tried that it was 22$ a can

Carl

I don't know!

Love the shin guards! Perhaps that paint is a water color? Or is an acrillic with water based paints in? Or its very thin with little pigment in it.

jabbakahut - Certain times airbrushing the primer makes sense (especially when trying to not hide very fine details).

Ghiest1 - I think I've actually found a way to do them quickly and uniformly, please keep reading.

IG10000 - Thanks!

While cleaning my house I found some Red primer I'd purchased for my Khador (warmachine) army. My dad looks at it and says "huh wonder what that would look like on your titans."
Turns out it looks like this (after 2 coats)

Which is a TON easier to put down and with a nice smooth finish.
So I decided to prime over the 3 test pieces I've been working with, and a khador model because that was the reason I purchased the paint

Due to ease of application and finish quality I think I'm going to go with this. The only problem with it is it takes nearly 45 minutes to dry.

I'm going to spend this week trying to finish painting the test pieces.

Well the other night I had a chance to test out the upcoming gold I'm going to use on the edges and pieces.
I masked off the eagle primed it, and hit it with alclad Pale Gold.

Its a little hard to photograph because it's so shiny.

Again this was just a test and I think I'm ready to start spraying a warhound.
