You are doing a great job here. Keep it up!

So you may notice a pattern here, I'm rather nervous about putting paint down on these titans.
While listening to screaming heretic they reviewed the new Badger Renegade Krome airbrush and it sounded that something that was better than my Iwata Eclipse so I picked it up.
During GWs 25th Anniversary release I picked up the Forgeworld MasterClass 2 book. This book showed off how they painted the Chaos Reaper titan and its rather easy. I've decided that is kind of what I'd like to go for as a paint style on my warhounds.

So as such I decided to try out my Krome. Here's some testing on a piece of foamboard sign, this is at 12psi with Vallejo Black primer.

This is the trial head from earlier. I painted it white using some cheap ass white walmart spray. This is at 15psi with Vallejo Black primer.

This is the trial shin 1 from earlier. I painted it white using some cheap ass white walmart spray. This is at 15psi with Vallejo Black primer.

This is the trial shin 2 from earlier. I painted it white using some cheap ass white walmart spray. This is at 15psi with Vallejo Black primer.

I'm going to try painting the lower 1/3 of a shin all black, and then test the red next. 1/2 will be clear tamiya red, the other 1/2 will be the red acrylic I picked up (to see if the modulation works through opaque paints).
Depending on how it goes will determine how I proceed.

Zeke 169 - Thanks! I think I've finally decided on how I want the red to look.
spudkins - Thanks! There's 27 previous pages if you'd like.
Hazzer - Thanks!

So I finally sat down with my airbrush again. The FW book mentioned using "Clear red" to get the effect they had. However I thought this might not be how I wanted to go so I masked off the shins I did and painted one half with the clear red, the other half with the Testors I bought so much of, and left a little strip in the middle so i could see what the white looked like.
All and all I really love the darker Testors acrylic but it is too flat and will need to be given a semi-gloss coating. The gloss red might look cool on chaos but not my vehicles. I think a yellow would look cool on my future eldar.

Definitely the Testors...that's the enamel testors right? I haven't used enamels in a long time, but can you add a gloss to it much akin to Vallejo acrylics? Or are you just planning to do a gloss coat over it?

The weathered look works great and it shows enough under the testors...I think there is too much 'bleed through' with the Tamia.

The testors is acrylic. If I was to use their enamels they wouldn't act anything like Vallejo acrylics. Enamels by their chemical nature do not act like acrylic, they'd dry slower, etc.
I've never been a big fan of enamels because of how they tend to be a little more picky on what can and can't be under them.

I think in the future for the testors I will put less coats down over the black areas. The pre-shading worked out great but needs a little something. That should become more apparent when there's other colors on there. Maybe its some post shading with another color (I've heard a clear orange looks good over red) but we'll see. I think the next step will be to get a black primer down on some of the areas.

The Tamiya clear really shows off how important it would be to be completely happy with the undercoat before moving onto the over coat. I think it will require a ton more experimenting before I get enough stones to paint some Eldar (or the $ to burn on eldar).

So this weekend I put a new primer on my warhounds. I tried simply doing the same pre-shading like I did on the legs but due to the complex angles and the fact that it was assembled made it hard to do it.
So I decided to go with highlights like the Imperial Armor books.
First up was priming the torso black.

Next was spraying the red down.

After this I primed the other 3 torsos black.

Its been a long time coming but all 4 leg sets and all 4 interior sets have now been primed black.

Next up (this weekend hopefully) I'll be getting out the red again and painting the armored pieces on these bits.
I'm going to do some more work on how I want the shins painted before I get started though.

Zeke 169 - Indeed it does! I think if I had it to do over I wouldn't have made them pose-able. While adding to the cool factor it makes them much more difficult to paint.

jabbakahut - Thanks!

Well last night I finally faced my fear of painting the legs and applied Red to all the bits that needed it on the first set of legs!

I'm hoping to paint a set of legs a night (or more) and get this step finished by Sunday.

Thursday I sign a lease on an apartment, Friday I have a Company party to go to, and Saturday I'm running a 40k tournament AND going to a Halo 4 lan party!

Hopefully I can find time in there to finish the other 3.

Moltar - Thanks!

Well as I'd hoped I was able to finish the red on the legs.

Astute viewers will notice that some parts didn't get the same treatment as others. These parts will get the Legio Metallica hazard stripes.

Also these pics are taken with my new Lumia 920. I should be able to get better pics going forward.
Next step will be to test the gold that FW used for their Reaver and if its something I can replicate I'll proably be using it instead of what I'd originally planned. The previous gold is a little too bright for an all over paint job.

Well I finally dug around and found something I was willing to try out on the test head. I present my new gold and the test of the hazard stripes

These were rather rough as I didn't snug the masking tape enough, or mask off before applying the gold rubbing powder down.
The gold is Warplock Bronze from GW, over which S&J Gold rubbing powder was applied. I'll need to mask off before I do this next time (and probably clear coat as well) but I think it looks pretty good. I'll probably also dial it down some so the bronze shows through in the deeper areas. The test head has something like 5 layers of paint on it now and details aren't as crisp.
The white is simply the Tamiya white primer from earlier.
Not all heads will have the hazard striping. I just wanted something I could test with and this was the only all black test piece.

I like the gold you've got going on, although I agree that dialing it down to save some of the bronze will probably add some needed depth to it. Personally, I like the hazard stripes on the head. I feel like it would really pop of the red body of the titan. Thanks for keeping us updated, Foda.

Moltar - Thanks for your encouraging words!
Rogue Wolves - Thanks! Right now I'm thinking there will be 1 head striped and 2 titans that have 1 shin striped. I'm leaving the last purely red.

Well I finally decided to spray some bronze on the first set. What do y'all think?

As you can see the masking didn't do enough. I thought I had masked enough but I was mistaken. It is probably in part to how thin the paint is (WAY too thin) but they're easy enough to touch up.
I've already started masking the next set. I'll be doing it a little slower as doing all the legs in one sitting was rather taxing on my back.
After the bronze is done I'm planning on the darker metals (everything that's black), seal them, then the gold powder, and a final coat of sealer before I start more weathering.

Wow, dude! You're still going with this one! You certainly have some perseverence. I get bored if the project takes to long.

This project is really looking nice now that you've got some paint action going on. I can't wait to see them finished!
