Man, I need to visit this thread more often! You´ve done some excellent stuff here migs, really like those desert operators.
One thing puzzles me, two of them have warm headwear (assuming balaclava?) for the desert?
Really like the spec-ops look those lasguns have!

I dig the new squad. They make a good addition to the specialized personnel in the army. I'm quite interested to see what you make of that new camo. It would be crazy if the squar (or whole army) changed color to suit the table.

Thanks. The entire army represents a mission under moonlight - and the desert is very cold at night I vision the twists to be mutated to sustain rad storms, sand blasts, heat and cold, but I want the rest of the army to look like they are operating at night, with a crisp, cool climate.
To an extent the head gear and feel is inspired by pics from Afghanistan and Iraq. Automatically Appended Next Post: KONF,
I like those a lot! If I make more, I may well look into custom building some of my own. I'll stick to these now to keep the momentum and also because the attached twists already have a standard IG plasma gun.

I had a similar problem for my failed guard project, Migs. However I used a plasma pistol and the Cadian flamer to solve it, removing the flamer barrel and replacing it with the plasma pistol minus the back 2mm and pistol grip. Worked rather well.

Mamma Mia!! The new Grey Knight Dex is a sacred gift from the Cabal for my operation.
And exactly where the project is heading sooner or later. I get to do a full squad of my faulx wielding legion marines and use the GK in pa rules - they will feel like Marines should do!! And in comes the inquisition, and my count as coteaz which means crazy operator squads with unique themes.
I'm sure for home games a few squads of allied guard will be kosher.
Thank you!!

I was disappointed with the lack of Storm Troopers and allies (I'm not surprised though) in the book. But I enjoyed most of the background (I'm at a loss to work out what's lurking under Titan) and the new Inquisitors and henchman units are great. As for your gaming purposes... well its perfect. I'm looking forward to a whole squad of Alpha Legion (I assume that will be a 2012 project?).
I like the new squad and the hats are great. The group reminds me of your Scout Squad.
As for the massive plasma weaponry GW let the side down by not making guard sized ones, like forge world do. konf's idea is great and I don't think having two types of plasma weaponry would be bad. The twist has an older version while the elite troopers have more modern versions (I know, this is 40k so it would probably be the other way round but you get the idea).
The Magos is coming along nicely...taking shape.

Hey Peter and Xan, good to see you guys! Been admiring the process of both of you.
90% done with the latest squad. WTF is wrong with me??
After getting the infantry mass together - I really need to expand the crazy borders of the operation and imagery. It is going too sensible now. I have how ever looked at some of my favourite codex covers in unhealthy detail to remind me what drives this project and why I must stand, well sit steady in this project against the promises of smoothness and crispiness... Visible brush strokes sir, yes sir!

I think so - though I really should do the second grenadier squad now...
And trying to get you guys some pics of the desert operators today. Nothing super special, but rounds up one of the themed squads nicely and gets me closer to what really makes this project. Automatically Appended Next Post: Sunday, April 10, 2011 / Spice
So - not entirely sure how you’re going to read this as a stand alone unit - but it fleshes out the second half of the twist squad into a nice themed veteran unit, while putting a clear need for that second Grenadier unit to balance and set the overall visual language of the army to colorful enough. These are a bit of pepper to the sauce that makes the dish.
The fact they ended up so drab nags me badly to be honest. I should’ve gone with army theme first, recent army inspiration second - not the otherway around.
I did have fun with these and painted fast and without too much consideration, which was a liberal brake. I had to go with dark guns - against the army standard to give the models some kind of a focus point. I also established clear rules for future and vehicles, where I need to be much stronger with 40k wackyness, and easier about realism and military of today.

The mustache on the Sargent is hilarious.
They look a bit bland compared to the spades, but that might say more about the spades then these guys. The twists, it I remember correct, are also very pale so bright green dudes with the twists might look a bit akward.

Next is 3 marines! and 10 grenadiers.
This was an odd squad - I'm displeased about them now that I've had time to reflect, but when I place them in the army I think differently... and I'm super pleased to have managed to finish a game legal force now, but I lost sight of the main goal in my appetite to just paint some cool military stuff and I can't go back and change due to the technique I use for this project. (need the white to start with)
Ah well, mistakes happen.
And with what comes next, I get to perfect formulas that already work and take the posing and character development to new directions.
THEN, I must get to single minis for the sake of my health.

those were the buggers from the other night I see they have used all their popcorn!
The camo is excellent (but since I've seen your Eldar Rangers its to be expected). I think I would have preferred camo guns too but I understand the need from a modelling perspective. I'm not really a fan of the skin colour on these guys. Trying to compare them with the other vets and it could just be the skin colour works better with the plain green fatigues. What I love is the tache, scarves and beanie. I like that you have camoed the skin too. The Serg reminds me of Blaine from Predator
Now a cheeky request...any chance of having another photograph of these guys with their Twist colleagues. I'm intrigued as to how they work together.

Thanks gents!
I've started work on 3! new marines Quite excited to work on the core of the project again. This will add up to 5 Alpharius and 1 Alpharius in Desert gear. So we are talking unit size and an entirely new dynamic. My wish is to finish building and painting them and the second 10 man squad of Grenadiers within this month. Crazy - but now I'm finding nuggets of time and have a week of around easter, I feel like making ambitious plans and stumbling midway and still having plenty to show for it.
These 13 models will establish the force as an army and create a first real retrospective point of the journey. I then have to swiftly follow with vehicles... and the way I see it, then comes the beginning! I finally drop all restrictions and deep dive into the gothic borders and adjacent elements of the XX Legion.

I made mine from scout shotgun arms cut down with plasma pistol coils and muzzles added.
I have a WIP pic around my network drive somewhere here... I will see if I can dig it up. Thank you very much for your job again, and for open some nice sources on matter of modern military warfare. I was real good to read Task Force Black, because i did not expect such level of information with a lot of action and revelations. Really nice.
About codex Gk as AL. It is best peace of work from GW ever, i think. GK player can do ANY army types. Yes with some BUTs, but... Sad, they did not get Valcs, but storm raven is real gunship! What can you ask to add for desert strikes what storm raven do not have? And this paladins are REAL marines equivalent. GK commander have nice abilities. Coteas do henchmen scoring. And how many types of them we have? Psykers, combat specialists, grunts, even xenos.
I can't wait to lay my hands on new codex and start to build new army.

So, soon I will have a 5 man squad of Marines that Intend to bump into 10 later + Desert Alpharius. For the Squad I will use Grey Knight rules. So everyone will have a falx, apart from heavy bolter (psycannon) and flamer (incinerator) guys. I love the fact the GK rules make them feel like marines should feel in game play.
Oh how I wish for a proper dakka iPhone app, I could snap an upload photos of the process in seconds - the lack of now means, even if I snap a pic now and then, I simply don't have the time to process and go through the cumbersome uploading process. I would happily pay 20 bucks for a proper, nicely integrated dakka app. Something like for facebook. Someone ought to find good business in a forum system that integrates with mobile computing properly.
