Hi guys,

I'm working on painting the Dark Angels from the Dark Vengeance WH40k boxset. I had a question about colorschemes though, and figured this would be the best place to ask.

On the box, and I suppose in canon, the Dark Angels have a colorscheme that is mostly focused on Green, with lots of red on the weapons and emblems.

Reference pic here:

I'm not a huge fan of the red, however, and I've been trying to think of something different to use. Particularly, I don't like how the red looks on the weapons and the big arrow-like emblems on the pauldrons.
However, I'm not really sure what would pair well with the green. I'm at a bit of a loss, haha.

Does anyone have any ideas, or examples, of what else might look good here?

Here is a photo of the progress on one of my space marines so far:

I was pretty pleased to get the skull painted like that. : )

Reds on SM rifles looks so stupid to me. I imagine the reason they do that is because green and red are complimentary colours.. They unconsciously please the eye and this can be used to help make you want to buy the items. Personally I'd paint the weapons black, same way most modern rifles are black. Looks much better than the cartoony red rifles GW gives everyone.

I'd probably use bone for the iconography and black for the bolter casing if you want to avoid the red. Black probably doesn't stand out enough against the green for the shoulder pad icons, but bone complements the rest of the scheme. The bolters work as black because they stand out against the chest eagles generally.

That makes sense - I was thinking black for the rifles, but like The Phazer mentioned, it might not pop off enough on the iconography. Bone is a good choice though, and I'll definitely keep that in consideration.

I have a full pot of Abaddon Black at home, so I'll probably give that a try on one of the rifles soon. Thanks guys!

I'd go for 'off-black'. Pure black for depicting the color black always seems to throw off the balance as a whole. Try with really dark grey.

I had the same issue as you Ash. I didn't like the red/green combo.

I ended up going with black weapon casings on my company marines. I kept the squad markings red though, as it was useful for a spot colour. Bone would work really well though I think, so definitely give it a go!

My photos are a little dark, but you get the idea hopefully.

If you don't like the reds, go with black on the bolter casings and probably go white with the shoulder emblem.

On Deathwing absolutely.

For my green DA I experimented with black, white, and bone. If you exaggerate the highlights black can look nice as does just heavily washing them with black and highlighting silver, contrast gray is a fantastic armor wash. White/bone didn't look like what I thought it would.
