This thread is brought you by my watching Starship Troopers. Yes, it is still work o’clock, but I’ve half an hour until a meeting, and nothing I can achieve in the intervening time.
Currently on the big battle on Planet Pi, the one with the compound. And I’d forgotten just how much I love the Rifle used by Mobile Infantry. Yet, a cursory Google suggests it’s actually wildly impractical in design, particularly for splatting bugs.
And it got me wondering.....whilst my total lack of Dakka knowledge prevents me going further than ‘does it look hella cool?’, there are those on Dakka who know their Dakka, and might have more technical reasons for favouring a specific SciFi infantry weapon.
Me? Much as I like the design of the Mobile Infantry assault rifle, it has to be the Pulse Rifle from Aliens. It just seems really practical. Multiple fire modes, auxiliary weapon, and fairly compact. Plus it has that iconic ‘thrrrrrrp’ sound when burst firing. Looks pretty snazzy, too!
Right, let’s be hearing from you then,

Dammit, cant mention the Glaive from Krull (utterly lethal to both target and user, and great enough to be included in Ready Player One, the ONLY melee weapon in movie history to be cooler than a lightsaber)
So, I;m gonna plump for Dredds gun (cant' rememebr for the life of me if its the Lawgiver or Lawbringer, i just know one is the bike, and the other is the gun).
PPS, can't believe i didn't think of the POV gun.... grumble grumble grumble.. Don't talk to me about internet lists.....
"Whatcha gonna do hotshot"
"what did you say?"
" I said...Hot Shot" BLAMMMM
Either that, or (and bear with me I'm going back a bit here) the guns from Blake's 7) just awesome looking things.
P.S. Grotsnik, you gotta stop this thread making spree man...I've been on Dakka for years and barely posted. Suddenly there's all sortsa topics I got opinions on...my poor 12 year old keyboard can't take it anymore....
Edit: aand now i realise you are talking about standard military unit weaponry. Does the prototype weapon from Eraser count? Sees through walls, absolutely massive, looks like a sniper rifle that weighs FAARRR to much?

Back in my day, fantasy was a part of sci-fi. As I am still alive, it is still my day, so I will choose the Glaive from Krull.
I will also choose the good old phaser from Star Trek, specifically TOS version.
"Through the darkness of future past, the magician longs to see.
One chants out between two worlds: Fire, walk with me." - Twin Peaks
"You listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks
The gun from the anime Psycho-pass is pretty great IMO. Point it at someone and it and it'll run a quick background check on the person to determine whether the safety should be on, it should be a taser, or it should be 100% lethal no matter where you manage to hit them with it by explodinating all their blood out.

You mean the one where it was a gun, and not an impossible to aim remote control.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Have an exalt sir.
As I am over 40 myself, I shall refrain from asking what "you're day" refers to.
I will allow Kroll regardless, as the baddies are extra-planetary
As for Dredd’s sidearm, that’s the Lawgiver (of various marks). The bikes are Lawmasters (of various Marks). Not to be confused with the rarely seen Lawrod, Justice Department’s long range rifle.

The FORCE assault rifle from the Hyperion Cantos is the Swiss Army Knife of biggaton sci fi weapons. Imagine someone took the Zorg ZF1 from the 5th Element and multiplied it by book SST mobile infantry weapon yields. The thing has mountain-carving particle beam weapons of many exotic varieties, anti-armor missiles and grenades, some kind of hard penetrating round, and flechettes. One FORCE soldier could take on an entire army from most franchises.
But more important than the firepower is the sheer number of options the weapon gives. You want freeeeems? It’s got that. You want pew-pew-pew? It’s got that, too. You want Dakka-Dakka-Dakka? Yep. You want wheeeewwwwwwwwww-KBOOZH? Yep yep yep. You want ssst-sssst-sssst-BLOOOojjj? It’s got you covered. You want b-b-b-byooooo ZAT? Green button in the left. You want thwakka thwack? Comes in five settings.

What to say? Except......
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, a very special shout-out to the humble Lasgun of 40k.
Sure, in its setting it’s laughable. And yet.....yet.
In the modern age, and for much of SciFi, it’s a General’s wet dream of Dakka.
It’s stupidly simple, stupidly reliable and available in a range of powers. It’s also a very effective weapon.
At its most basic, you need only show its wielder which end is the dangerous end, and they’ll probably manage just fine. Which is just as well.
In the hands of a survivor of the first campaign or someone who otherwise knows their arse from their elbow in military matters, it rocks.
Waxed through a morass? Operating in zero-g? Ice world? Desert World, or even given Chaos gonna Chaos, Dessert world? The Lasgun just keeps on trucking.
For literally arming the masses, is their any finer weapon?

I humbly accept your decision oh maker of many threads.
Yet still i see no discussion of the brilliance that is the Eraser gun. Now granted, it was marketed as your typical "Arnold" action movie, but its sci-fi through and through.
Are we allowing weapons commonly used by alien pro/ant-tagonists? If so then I vote for the Plasma-caster!! (for those unfamiliar with the name, its the shoulder mounted instrument of death wielded by the Predator in numerous films, seems like a fairly common weapon for them)
On a strictly mass use basis? The humble repeating blaster as employed to no great effect by a multitude of white armoured blind marksmen in a series known as Star Wars.
Underpowered. Horrifically inaccurate. Somehow still remarkably cool looking.
Edited because i cant spell instrument.

The pistol is the Lawgiver.
The bike is the LawMASTER.
They also had Arbitrator shotguns and LawRods (select/autofire rifle).
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I really like that gun Zorg sells to the Mangalores (spelling?) in The Fifth Element. Homing bullets, net launcher, and so many more fun things and even a little red self destruct button on the bottom...

Grotsnik Corp. Sorry, No Refunds.
SPACEBALLS THE MOVIE had the ultimate scifi dakka guns, because they were real dakka guns in every sense of the word. The props used were calico m-100, which is a real firearm available in .22LR and 9mm, had ammunition kept in a spring wound (you wind it like a clock) giant magazine. For law enforcement, they were sold with a fully automatic version. So these dakka .22lr guns (I assuem they bought the cheapest for the movie) could, in theory, have probably fired 100 roudns just by holding the trigger down. Against enemy heavy armor, its just like a real lasgun. You know, useless.
Seriously, they could be frigging flashlights. These guys even look like PDF gaurd to me...
Its LITERALLY real scifi dakka. Also, they are probably hideiously unreliable, made by the lowest bidder, and you have to load them by winding the ammunition into a footlong wacky magazine with a big spin lever.

No, the Noisy Cricket with the gigantic suppressor barrel that dampens it's recoil. I think from the cartoons.
Spoiler:
Too bad things have to be man-portable. That keeps me from promoting the Boomgun from Rifts, lol.

"By this point I'm convinced 100% that every single race in the 40k universe have somehow tapped into the ork ability to just have their tech work because they think it should."
If you ever saw "Soldier" on the outer limits how about Quarlo's gun? A disintegrator rifle, no detectable power source, apparently can't be exhausted, only 3 moving parts, can work with any half dozen pieces missing....
I liked the tnuctipun spy gun in one of Larry Niven's Known Space short stories.
It had a changing-sword (monofilament wire in a stasis field - cuts through literally anything made of matter with adjustable length), a disintegrator, normal laser, heat ray, remote nuclear suppressor (caused large explosions at a distance), and and AI that could learn language and determine if the wielder was on the right side in the war - and if not self-destruct with literal nuclear force. Probably a couple of other things I forgot to mention.
Beyond that, I dunno. Jaffa staff weapons look cool, but aren't practical. Zats were cool though. Zap once to stun, twice to kill, thrice to disintegrate the corpse.
