No, of course I have, but I've been trying to catch up on the glaring holes in my viewing history since lockdown has started to erode my usual viewing schedule.

Trouble is, in most cases the reason I've not seen a show or movie (leaning towards movie, some shows will just take more investment of time than I'm willing to give right now) isn't on my radar for some reason, so when I try to think of stuff I need to catch up on I blank.

So I thought I'd ask Dakka what glaringly obvious things y'all really should have watched but have never got around to, partly as a means of confession and partly in the hope that your admissions may help me think of gaps of my own.

For instance, until last week I had never watched The Shining all the way through, I felt like I had because so much is iconic, and had seen pieces, but not the whole thing. Same deal with 2001, but I can't find that to stream on rotation in the UK services ATM, so that's earmarked for another time.

It doesn't have to be worthy, just the sort of film that if discussing movies with another fan of that genre, your admission of not watching it would make them pull this face

FTFY.

In all seriousness, Episode 9 is not even worth the time it takes to watch it.

I have been watching some horror. Saturday was my Halloween marathon, so I watched 1, 2, 4, and 5. I still haven’t seen the 2018 movie.

I also watched The Changeling with George C. Scott. If you have not see this picture, and you like ghost stories, definitely watch it ASAP. It’s available on YT.

I'm doing similar, albeit with a less storied franchise. Working my way through the Conjuring universe films ATM.

The 2018 movie was.. ok? I guess? It sort of has that same thing as the Disney Srar Wars film has for people of a certain vintage, the appealing part was seeing how time had passed for the characters I knew, but the fresh additions didn't really add much.

You missed a chance to catch TGM on Film4 this evening!

R+M needs a watch, it's all on Netflix now and it's worth it just for the references you can add to your canon.

If you calibrate for the fact you're watching popcorn horror, probably. I've done 1, 2 and The Nun so far. 2 was interesting to watch if only to see what I assume was a largely North American film crew apparently thought the UK in the 70s looked like (ok, it rains, but not that much!) The Nun really should have been creepier than I found it considering the imagery and the villain, but just felt a little uninspired.

Have the Annabelles to do over the coming days.

By and large you can do worse in this genre.

The most famous movie I haven't seen is West Side Story, but with the remake coming soon I'll probably fix that before the end of the year.

I've got a real passion for cinema, and I have watched pretty much anything that is universally acclaimed. I'm not an expert of tv shows and cartoons though and I've never seen tons of titles that are very popular: Breaking Bad, Friends, The Wire, The Sopranos, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Dragon Ball, etc...

@Azrael13 - I believe 2001 is on Now TV at the moment (it was when I looked a few weeks ago)

There’s a lot of the classics I haven’t seen; Citizen Kane, It’s a Wonderful Life, Casablanca, etc. but I generally subscribe to the “life is too short to spend time and effort watching films/reading books that you don’t want to, just because you feel you have to.”

I think the better thing is to try to watch something new, instead of re-watching something that you can karaoke in it’s entirety. (And yes, I still do that too)

None of them were really "good" after the first one, but all of them were certainly entertaining enough to be worthwhile I think. Definitely better than those synonym movies that they were firing out every October for a while there.

Big oof. I mean, maybe you just don't like mafia movies, which is OK - but these are really great flicks. I'd go Goodfellas/Casino over the Godfather movies - the Godfather movies laid down the tracks upon which better trains crossed, in my opinion. Goodfellas and Casino are both very similar films thematically; I'd say I like Casino a hair better but it's really a coin flip.

Also the criminally underrated Bronx Tale.

Not seeing an F&F film I get. At the beginning they're a pretty hard watch... but then you hit that 5th one and everything changes.

But never seen a Bond film? I was thinking today that I've only seen about 1/3rd of the Bond Films, but never having seen one? Wow.

Indeed, managing to dodge all of 007s antics would be a near impossible feat in the UK given they (along with ww2 films) were until the streaming era staples of public holiday telly

adding

all non-animated musicals besides la-la land and moulin rouge, they just confuse me ( although oddly Once More might be my fav Buffy episode)

nearly all Robin Williams film output beside Veitnam, Good Will and Hook

any of the Elm Street films past i think 3

Disagree, the first one, while a pretty blatant Point Break rip off, was excellent, the second one could (and perhaps should) have killed the franchise by itself though. The post reboot ones are fun and entertaining action films, but I do regret they abandoned any pretence of the grit and authenticity they aspired to with the first one.

The rule for FnF is, as loathe as I am to admit it, only watch the ones with Vin Diesel in.

The older Bond films might be worthwhile as cultural artifacts, but I wouldn’t consider them essential. The Timothy Dalton Bond films are the ones I remember most fondly, though, so I might be off base.

As for musicals, I highly recommend Little Shop of Horrors (the Rick Moranis version, director’s ending if you can find it). The music is great, but the scene with Bill Murray and Steve Martin is worth the price of rental alone.

The Fisher King might be Williams’ best movie. Might also want to check out Dead Poet’s Society for the pop culture impact...if you ever get around to it.

The Nightmare movies get ‘better’ as they go on. The one with Roseanne and Tom Arnold is practically a Bugs Bunny cartoon with blood. Freddy vs Jason is a solid crossover film.

Only F&F movie I've seen is the most recent one, Hobbs & Shaw. Thought it was pretty entertaining and it made me want to go back and watch the rest.

Never watched any of the major horror franchises (Saw, Elm Street, etc.) and I don't plan to either as I think slasher movies are stupid (if you all enjoy that kind of thing, more power to you).

As for classic movies I haven't seen, there are plenty, including The Godfather and its sequels, Citizen Kane, West Side Story, and Breakfast at Tiffany's just to name a few. I've seen quite a few of the ones others have mentioned, but that's mainly because I was raised on a steady diet of classic movies and TV.

If we're also including popular TV shows, I can say I haven't watched a single episode of Rick and Morty, Game of Thrones, Tiger King, Adventure Time, or Regular Show. And plenty of other shows that others enjoy. I'd rather watch older shows than most of what's "popular" or "trending" on TV today. I am, however, working my way through Avatar: The Last Airbender for the first time, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it!

I'm envious.

The former has spawned far too many copies of itself infesting other movies, tv show episodes, short stories and books, and the latter is everything terribly banal about middle America in its most dull and morbidly depressing form.

Just did a search of 'great movies of the 21st century' to try to contribute.
The list was nothing that seemed to contribute.
Maybe John Wick, Logan and Barbie: a Fairy Story, since those seem fairly comparable.
In fact the only things that came up on the list that I had seen were Deadpool (regretted) and Spirited Away (didn't regret)

Movies I haven't seen that people ocassionally expect:
The Green Mile
Shawshank Redemption

That happens here too. At least one channel plays them all over the course of Thanksgiving Weekend, then the weekend before and/or after Christmas then also on New Years Eve & Day.
At one point I noticed they were on three different networks simultaneously.

The Dark Knight. I remember when everyone was talking about this thing, and how Heath Ledger’s Joker was one of the character’s best portrayals. It also seems to be blamed for causing the overall tone of DC comics to be somewhat darker. A decade and some later and I still haven’t gotten around to it.

I also seem to have this weird aversion towards the more artsy, philosophical, political, or historically-accurate films. The reasoning is admittedly kind of juvenile and ridiculous. It’s not that I wouldn’t like them, but I can’t help but feel some sense of jealousy towards the creator’s skill (just like a Skaven!). Any ideas on how to avoid this mindset?

Same. Just not into gangster movies as a genre.

I've also missed most of the various horror or thriller franchises over the last couple of decades... I think I dropped out somewhere around I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

And I passed on Schindler's List. War movies in general don't appeal, as I find them too depressing. I watched Saving Private Ryan, but only because it was on and I had nothing better to do at the time.

Haven't seen the Green Mile, although it's on the 'to do' list, and I've read the book at least three or four times. Although on the Stephen King front, I don't think I've seen Kubrick's Shining all the way through... I find it really, really dull, although I enjoyed the TV miniseries remake.

I’ve seen Frozen once, just ‘cause I wanted to know what all the fuss was about; it was...fine. Like, a solid B+. If you like Disney animation (I never have really) then it’s definitely a must see. If you’re not, you won’t have wasted your time.

@Ouze, given the cultural landmark status of the series, I would recommend watching at least one Bond film. IMHO You Only Live Twice from the classic Connery era, Goldeneye from the intermediate period and Casino Royale from the current Daniel Craig run are the best options.

@Voss, I’m surprised no-one else has immediately jumped in about Shawshank(!). I know everyone’s tastes are different, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more moving film. It’s very close to perfection in terms of casting/performances, plot, direction, cinematography and music.

Of the other’s on your list, John Wick is a great action film. I only saw it recently, really enjoyed it.

Also I have the weird thing of appreciating, but not really liking, the Godfather trilogy. I get why people like it and I can see the quality in them, but they’re soooo slow. If I had the DVD, I’d be tempted to crank it up to 1.2x speed.

John Wick 1 is great. 2 is Ok. 3 is meh. You can go too far with your world building.

I really enjoyed season 1 of Final Space. Season 2 had quite a tonal change. Still pretty good so let's see where season 3 leads but it isn't as good as 1.

I was really enjoying Jericho. Pity.

I have never watched an episode of Lost. I've seen the beach crash scene and that's it.
